Tax rebate cheeky bugger

drinkingwineoutofamug · 27/04/2022 10:15

So had a letter off HRMC to say I had over paid tax by £35. They would send me the payment through some company called Brooksdale. Just had a message off said company to claim my £35. No it will be £18 after brooksdale take their fee!
So my question is how do I get the full £35? I now can't find the letter I got last week to contact HRMC .

Sounds like a scam

newbiename · 27/04/2022 10:18

Scam. HMRC pay you the full amount

BundtCake · 27/04/2022 10:18

It doesn’t sound legit.

Sounds like scam - HMRC should just send a cheque to you

Rememberallball · 27/04/2022 10:18

Register on the .gov website for your own tax account and then you can request they pay your overpayment as a cheque direct to you without needing to use 3rd party companies.

However, I’d be concerned how Brooksdale got your details to know about the tax rebate in the first place and would worry they were trying to scam you!!

drinkingwineoutofamug · 27/04/2022 10:19

The letter from HRMC said payment would be given through Brooksdale. It's really pissed me off as as we all know atm £35 is £35. I can't afford to heat my house!

IT'S A SCAM

JennysWell · 27/04/2022 10:20

Did you authorize them as agents for a ppi claim? HMRC must have your authority to have done this

Nope

I've never had a tax rebate that went through a subsidiary company. It's always either gone straight into my bank account, or been paid by cheque. This stinks of a scam. I hope you haven't given them your bank details!

It's 100% a scam. I've had several rebates from HMRC, they don't use this company, nor are there any admin fees to pay.

MirandaWest · 27/04/2022 10:22

Did you get in touch with Brooksdale initially to see whether you could reclaim overpaid tax? I know I’ve seen adverts on Facebook for companies like that.

The problem is that I think those companies get authorised to deal with your tax refund and so they can take their cut of it.

girlmom21 · 27/04/2022 10:29

Yeah it's definitely a scam. You haven't given them your details have you?

I reckon that original letter was actually phishing for information and from Brooksdale and not HMRC. If the apparent rebate is for 2021/22 tax year, then they have till October to finalise tax accounts and make payment to you. If it’s for a previous year, it would be listed on your tax account!!

The only options I’ve ever had for tax rebates are to either receive a cheque direct or have the rebate added to my tax free allowance for the following year (in the same way, when I owed tax due to employer being —complete crap— lax with registering company car use for over a year, I was given the choice of paying a lump sum or having my tax code revised and it being taken at source).

lickenchugget · 27/04/2022 11:05

Your letter came from Brooksdale, it’s a scam

senua · 27/04/2022 11:08

There is no £35. It's a scam.

BlueSpottedGiraffe · 27/04/2022 11:09

Yep if they owed you £35 it would say so on your gov gateway account, as a pp said they have until October to deal with rebates so you might still have one coming but this £35 definitely doesn't exist.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 27/04/2022 11:18

No luck on the phone so have tweeted them. They have said if I signed an agreement to use Brooksdale then they will pay. I have never agreed to that as this is the 1st time I've ever had a rebate
So looks as if HRMC do use a third party to pay out 😠

OP posts:
girlmom21 · 27/04/2022 11:19

Your screenshot says there's no £35 because they don't even have all your information for the last tax year yet.

No HMRC don't unless the third party have told HMRC that you've authorised them to receive your tax repayments. Brooksdale have got your tax details from somewhere and submitted a claim on your behalf. Are you sure you've never given your tax reference number (UTR) or national insurance number to any firm either over the phone or online? Or maybe tried to make a tax refund claim via your union?

pizzaand · 27/04/2022 11:25

Have you ever used a company to reclaim ppi?
