Tax rebate cheeky bugger

drinkingwineoutofamug · 27/04/2022 10:15

So had a letter off HRMC to say I had over paid tax by £35. They would send me the payment through some company called Brooksdale. Just had a message off said company to claim my £35. No it will be £18 after brooksdale take their fee!
So my question is how do I get the full £35? I now can't find the letter I got last week to contact HRMC .

@Badbadbunny I had never heard of these Brooksdale until this morning. I've googled them.

You must have signed up for Brooksdale to put in a claim on your behalf - for WFH tax allowance maybe?

HMRC only pay out via agents like this if you made a claim via the agent....

Tomnooktoldmeto · 27/04/2022 11:32

This really doesn’t sound genuine, we often have refunds and they come straight to our bank account

I called hmrc this morning at about 9am and was on hold for 32mins then they answered. It is worth hanging on if you can

Nope I work for the nhs. Never had a rebate before . Never claimed for expenses.
Never claimed ppi, no loans only mortgage.
Totally lost. And if a scam I've spent all bloody morning chasing .

Just had a look to see who Brooksdale are. They do process claims for overpaid tax - but only if you employ them to do so. If you submitted your own claim or the repayment is just as a result of HMRC calculating your overpayment then the refund should just come directly to you - usually by cheque attached to a letter.

Marmite27 · 27/04/2022 11:45

That’s not right, I have £65 due back and they paid it directly to my account after if logged on through the portal and given my account details. They’d have sent a cheque (for the full amount) otherwise.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 27/04/2022 11:47

When the letter came though from HRMC , it said about Brooksdale and cheques. No cheque attached , but being a knob head and life getting in the way I didn't query at the time.
Right need to go out but will up date if I get anywhere with it. Thank you for advice and help

Tax agent here. This is a scam. Do not engage with Brookfield. Looking at your screenshot - You are not owed a rebate for YE 5 April 22.

If you were, HMRC will have notified you directly how they were going to refund prior to making repayment. They will only ever send repayment via an authorised tax agent if you have given explicit instructions direct to HMRC. In majority of cases, HMRC will refund direct to your bank account or send you a cheque directly.

I very much doubt the letter came from HMRC. It was from likely to be a phishing letter.

Try calling at 8am you normally get through quite quickly at that time

Rememberallball · 27/04/2022 11:55

If you look on the Money Saving Expert website, there are a number of threads about Brooksdale and nearly all relate to PPI claims through ‘The Claim Guys’. Have you ever enquired about possible PPI claims - even if you never progressed through to a claim?

drinkingwineoutofamug · 27/04/2022 12:10

I've just found the letter pics won't upload but it's the same envelope my self employed partner gets , dated 6 April 2022 . For year 2018-2019.
Right I'm off

Oh quick I've been back on the gov portal and requested a cheque 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have had rebate from HMRC and it goes straight back in to my account (that I use to pay them).
Do you think you are entitled to this refund? Is it for 2021-22 tax year? Have you even filed for it? It's not due to be filed until January 2023 (though of course you can do it earlier).

You don't necessarily have to file a tax return to get a rebate!

If you are on PAYE they are processed automatically by October

ZeroCaffeine · 27/04/2022 13:03

Why are you so determined that this isn’t a scam? 🤦🏽‍♀️

The letter from HRMC said payment would be given through Brooksdale. It's really pissed me off as as we all know atm £35 is £35. I can't afford to heat my house!

Are you sure the letter is genuine?

drinkingwineoutofamug · 27/04/2022 13:16

Back from dentist. The envelope is the same as what my self employed partner received. For some god forsaken reason I can not upload pictures.
Letter resembles the letters I receive each year of the breakdown of my taxes. Just this one says I am due a tax rebate of £35. I have been on the gateway portal. Looked at the wrong year. Found the letter , checked for the right year. Said I have a refund and requested a cheque. Said should get confirmation in 15 days
Will go on desk top site and see if I can upload

HMRC can refund directly to your bank account. I had a rebate this way.

Cazziebo · 27/04/2022 13:26

have a look on MoneySavingExpert. It looks as if it's tax from a previous claim for PPI or similar. They act on behalf of the claims companies. Here's one thread about it forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6321210/hmrc-sending-cheque-to-brooksdale-ltd

Are you sure you haven't ever signed a form allowing them to act for you? These companies can be very sneaky.

Rememberallball · 27/04/2022 13:29

When you look at tax details for that year, does it say you’ve paid tax on anything other than income? Shares, PPI or other charges applied to your bank account or other financial product?

Its just very strange that HMRC would suddenly decide to send your tax refund to a 3rd party company without them already having your authorisation to do so (especially when the 3rd party are going to deduct charges from the refund!)

I would send a dSAR to both HMRC and Brooksdale asking for copies of all information held including electronic communications, transcripts of phone calls and internal communications to see if you can uncover the reason they have decided to send the money via this company.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 27/04/2022 13:42

I claimed ppi but dealt with companies myself not a company or agent thingy.
I used templates . I've never heard of Brooksdale before this. I'm stumped.
I've never had loans etc don't even have a credit card.
