Ive just read that nato is warning of an escalation in the Russian war to WW3 and the risk of it going nuclear. We've just started coming out of the covid pandemic. We've got Boris Johnson breaking the law as pm and not caring. We had Trump in the US for years and might have again. And thats not even mentioning the climate crisis or the cost of living.

I mean, whats happening to us all? I cant get my head around it. I'm mid 50s and can't believe what I'm reading. I'll need to delete my news app...AGAIN...i can't live with this info.

The news is 24/7 and in your face. As soon as you enable wifi on your phone, you get met with doom and gloom.
Things are not more dire now... we are just more aware of them.... being forced to be more aware of them.

Turn it off. Turn it all off. Go out, live your life.

Bbc news have changed their logo so the app looks completely different and I realised I'd forgotten to look at it for more than a week. Done wonders for my MH

However to the OP, you should watch Operation Mincemeat at the cinema. There is the seen war and then there is the unseen war. What plays out in the news is a lot of propaganda. Different times but people will be working behind the scenes on all sorts.

The timing of the release of that film wasn’t lost on me.

I bet the real operational details vs what history records as the official version, leaves lots of details that equate to 😲 moments

BeerLoas · 26/04/2022 22:42

Yes! All manner of double and triple bluffs - still not sure I have my head round the latter! Lots of undocumented diplomatic work and intelligence I expect.

watched a couple of good documentaries on Putin via the BBC. Gives a sense of how the West could have behaved differently to Russia at crucial points; who knows if it would have changed current events.

takeaway was they are VERY paranoid of being encircled by ‘the West’. Neighbouring states are threatened/invaded militarily until they give up a piece, thus undermining sovereignty and full independence. Only then does he seem to back off.

I am feeling you Op, I'm sorry to say it does feel like scary times.

LettestMeLettestYou · 26/04/2022 22:50

For me, doing little acts of random kindness/friendliness - making a charity donation, sending someone flowers or a small gift that I know will brighten their day, having a chat with someone whilst waiting in line at the supermarket, telling a stranger I really like her outfit - helps to keep the blues at bay over all the shit going on in the world right now
That's lovely, I will try and remember to be kind more often, it used to come naturally. Now, whether it's peri meno or just feeling wary and worn out, I am much more selfish than like.

A few weeks ago I was getting very anxious over what was happening in the news and the round the clock updates - I was feeling stressed and couldn’t sleep. So I decided to limit reading the news headlines to every few days or so. And I’m feeling 100% better for it.

You must have a pretty short memory. I'm 60 and remember the car I was in being searched for bombs during the height of the IRA, drills at school in case of nuclear bomb, mortgage rates of 14%, and the recent fuel shortage was nothing compared to the 70s, and of course the Vietnam war. Plus miners strikes, poll tax riots and so on. A lying PM, idiot leaders, fuel crisis and threat of war is nothing new.

Height of the IRA? Did you forget entirely about the other side of that decades long conflict? 🤔

It is really shit now. But tbh in 30 years time uncontrollable climate change will put it into perspective 😔

PickAChew · 26/04/2022 23:32

Is this from the same news sources that said we would have temperatures of - 7, this week?

WhiteFire · 26/04/2022 23:39

OP - Please delete your news app, this just feeds into your worries and concerns. (Is my recollection right that the covid period was also very difficult?) For your own sake you need to stop reading the news all the time.

I don't want to be trite but you shouldn't worry about things you can't control.

NoThanksThough · 27/04/2022 00:48

I don't watch or read the news, its all lie's or exaggeration to get you to read it and worry.

Where did covid go? Doesn't even exist anymore according to the news, happened over night! Don't worry about it!

I agree with the suggestion the OP stop watching the news for a bit, but I don't understand how can say you don't watch or read it and then go on to say "according to the news" covid doesn't exist anymore. How can you know what the news is or isn't reporting or changes overnight if you don't watch or read it?

Lessofallthisunpleasantness · 27/04/2022 00:54

Yep, we are all f*ed. Always were, it is just a matter of how long it takes. Think of it as a massive game of Risk. Lots will die, someone will win, but the game will still be over.

It is what is is. I suppose it means one can stop worrying about climate change though.

Yes, you're absolutely right.

this sums it up really. Feel about like we're in one of those disaster movies sleepwalking towards chaos...
