Ive just read that nato is warning of an escalation in the Russian war to WW3 and the risk of it going nuclear. We've just started coming out of the covid pandemic. We've got Boris Johnson breaking the law as pm and not caring. We had Trump in the US for years and might have again. And thats not even mentioning the climate crisis or the cost of living.

I mean, whats happening to us all? I cant get my head around it. I'm mid 50s and can't believe what I'm reading. I'll need to delete my news app...AGAIN...i can't live with this info.

You must have a pretty short memory. I'm 60 and remember the car I was in being searched for bombs during the height of the IRA, drills at school in case of nuclear bomb, mortgage rates of 14%, and the recent fuel shortage was nothing compared to the 70s, and of course the Vietnam war. Plus miners strikes, poll tax riots and so on. A lying PM, idiot leaders, fuel crisis and threat of war is nothing new.

Yep. Cuban missile crisis, people were watching their windows, waiting for them to melt. And smogs in London in the 60s, they are a thing of the past.

ssd · 26/04/2022 16:50

All those berating me for not remembering the Cuban missile crisis...i wasn't alive

I only recognise your name because you post such doom laden posts! Just turn off the news for now and I'll click hide on this thread

lightand · 26/04/2022 17:25

With respect @ssd , if you are going to read the news, you need to read it a couple of times to get the right information hopefully.
As others are saying Russia saying it, and Nato saying it, are two different things entirely.

I appreciate things are difficult to understand. But making sure you have the right info beofre a panic, is rather crucial. To you and others you talk with.

ssd · 26/04/2022 18:58

You're right @lightand , i went back and read the article again and i got it wrong.
@HardRockOwl, funny that, ive never noticed any of your posts.

@tuliplover Whenever people talk about brown people and terrorism, I always remind them it's not that long ago that terrorism had an Irish accent, but we didn't accuse every Irish person of it. I don't remember the 70's, but being from a northern city I remember the miners strikes and unemployment in the 80's. I do think, though, that the 90's was a pretty quiet decade, really, and we thought that humans were improving, then the new century started and all hell let loose!

Hmum0fthre3 · 26/04/2022 08:54

@ssd I don't watch or read the news, its all lie's or exaggeration to get you to read it and worry.

Where did covid go? Doesn't even exist anymore according to the news, happened over night! Don't worry about it!

Erm, not sure this is a healthy view!

Jem57 · 26/04/2022 19:30

Why even worry over something you have absolutely no control over.

Grin I take it you have never met any humans?

'Why worry?' hahahahaha

FrankLeeSpeaking · 26/04/2022 20:59

Nowt we can do, OP.
Enjoy whatever time you have and hope for the best. Turn off the news.

I wasn’t alive when the Romans/Vikings/Normans invaded my country. Nor when the Tudors wiped away the hitherto normal way of life or during the civil war when Oliver Cromwell ruled with tyranny. I missed the reformation, the decadence of the rich Georgians and the terrible squalor of life for the average, working class Victorian. The horrors of the World Wars were not of my time (though my mother lived through the second). I just missed the Cuban missile crisis but recall with clarity the fears we all had during the Cold War (with the advice to paint your windows, stick egg boxes on your walls and hide under a matress 🤣🤣🤣), then the Falklands, Iraq and Syria.

I can still use my imagination, though, and appreciate that the populace of each period probably thought they were living through the worst of times because that’s the way people think.
Life went on, it will now.

have you watched Up?

They really shouldn’t.

ssd · 26/04/2022 21:21

I watched a ch5 programme earlier called dogs having important jobs, or something similar. (To avoid the news ), the dogs were so clever, they would do a better job than bloody men most of us

I understand your perspectives, but imagine the world when extra terrestrials land, ?
Basically throughout history their have always been various activities that could put humans into ww3, just that with the news services we have today, we know more in one way but also don't know due to newspaper d notices ect

Spent the cold war 70's and 80's with the nuclear threat in the background. It didn't worry me then and it doesn't now.

Although if I see a mushroom cloud I'm driving towards it. Don't fancy a slow death from radiation sickness after scavenging for supplies and losing to fighting off desperados in a nuclear winter.

Moonface123 · 26/04/2022 21:49

The news is toxic and l pay little attention to it all. Most people are just trying to live a peaceful way of life, but that doesn't sell so well or bring in the viewing figures.
You often find after a natural disaster of any kind people are queuing up to help, kindness and goodwill still prevail, and everyday small random acts of kindness are carried out, don't view the world through printed headlines, stay away from the news, it's much better for your mental health.
Green Renaissance on youtube will restore your faith in human nature, these people have naturally mastered the art of living a beautiful way of life.

BlackeyedSusan · 26/04/2022 21:50

The world has always been in turmoil. Just this time it is a bit nearer our bit of the world and we hear about it more. Earthquakes, famines, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, (the year with no summer) wars, Syria, Lebanon, NI, Afghanistan, Iraq, rebels in African countries causing terror, economic collapse in South America, Cuban missile crisis, the cold war,

As someone of Irish descent who lived in the North during IRA bombs, and a frequent traveler to Ireland in the 80’s and 90’s I beg to differ. My whole family was been pulled over at airports multiple times (apart from parents we are English sounding and UK passport), my dad particularly was treated poorly/roughly by security and there was nothing but put up with it. I learned that lesson aged 10. He’s been beaten up in local pubs due to his accent and all sorts so best not to make sweeping statement generalisations you’d like to be true but aren’t.

BeerLoas · 26/04/2022 22:09

However to the OP, you should watch Operation Mincemeat at the cinema. There is the seen war and then there is the unseen war. What plays out in the news is a lot of propaganda. Different times but people will be working behind the scenes on all sorts.

The timing of the release of that film wasn’t lost on me.
