Your child is roughly the same weight as my 3.5 year old who is due to start school in September and lots of previous posters are saying the same sort of thing. How does this not worry you?

I’m not one to panic - I’m not a first time parent so for one I have a lot of experience and I see an alert happy active child …… so of course I’m not going to panic or worry !

obviously though she does need a health professionals opinion just to do an accurate weight and height measurement etc but I don’t feel overly worried because I’m not seeing any signs that would really concern me ! I have taken on board what posters have said and I’ll contact the hv tomorrow but what help would it be for me to start panicking over something beyond my control at this point in time ??
i know she’s not overeating and I see no worrying signs so I feel like she’s just naturally this size but yes, i will seek the advice of professionals just in case

Similar to @Rhubarblin I've done lots of research on bigger nappies / pull ups for a child with SEN.

DC didn't grow out of size 8 pull-ups until nearly 7 years old and now wears ABENA Abri-Flex Junior XS2 which we get through Amazon. I can't conceive of a toddler who would be tall enough for these but anyone looking for "the next size up" after size 8, the ABENA brand has worked well here coupled with DryNites 8-15 overnight - the DryNites do come up very small I found, their age 4-7 was much smaller than a size 8 pampers.

I wish Tesco made their Junior nappies in a pull-up option!

What's her body shape like overall? Is she chubby all over or does she just have a large abdomen?

OP posters have done the conversion and are freaking.

Is your DD actually taller than you say she is because you or your husband come from a tall family? I have female cousins who are over 6 foot so they were always bigger children.

Anyway Pampers do larger sizes - you have to get them from a large supermarket - and actually some toddlers especially girls can be potty trained from 18 months. Though it's better to do it when they are interested and can communicate their needs some how, which if they have older siblings maybe earlier than those siblings.

bakewellbride · 24/04/2022 21:23

I've worked with reception age children for over 7 years and they always eat a sandwich made from one slice of bread cut in half so perhaps stopping the sandwiches made from 2 slices of bread would be a positive start for your child. The clothes size thing should've set the alarm bells ringing long ago to be honest but at least you've got some perspective from this thread e.g. the growth chart thing and you're making a call tomorrow.

V v chubby arms with rolls , she’s obviously big for her age but she doesn’t look huge to me

I haven’t measured her but me and my husband aren’t tall so I think tts why she is short

I’m not going to restrict her intake at all till I’ve done a food diary and seen the hv as I really don’t think she’s overeating and not having big portions for breakfast and dinner as she has toddler bowls and plates

BetterBee · 24/04/2022 21:32

At 18 months she shouldn’t have arms with rolls. She sounds very overweight to me. Hopefully the health visitor can help.

gogohm · 24/04/2022 21:32

My dd has autism and wore pull ups at night until 9 - she was only wearing size 5 then

Beees · 24/04/2022 21:36

18 month old toddlers are not supposed to have chubby arms in the same way none mobile babies do. If she has very chubby arms she is most likely extremely overweight.

Also the toddler plate and bowl are redherrings it's still possible to have a portion that is much too big even when using a smaller plate. The sandwich you mentioned is a good example of this.

I really hope that once you've seen the health visitor you can make some rapid changes as she does sound almost dangerously overweight from your descriptions.

goldsparklyChocolate · 24/04/2022 21:36

re portion sizes it’s things like with the banana and yogurt it is a small banana and 2-3 dessert spoons of natural yogurt.
scrambled egg is 1 egg and 1 slice of toast

I use the 50/50 medium sliced bread - used to use brown but hv advised white or 50/50

if she has avocado it’s 1/4 of an avocado

an apple is a small dessert apple and a portion of strawberries is 3 cut up

Absolutely daft comment. 'always' 🙄

I know plenty of kids that would eat 2 x slices of bread. Or something else entirely like pitta or ciabatta.

The figures the OP has provided do seem way off; however, she has sensibly said she'll check with the professionals.

Your change would really make little to no difference anyway.

goldsparklyChocolate · 24/04/2022 21:38

Porridge is made with 2oz milk - and prob 8 blueberries and a few raspberries chopped up again not a massive portion and she has no snacks whatsoever just breakfast lunch and dinner and won’t drink any milk at all. She had formula up till 12.5 months and then refused cows milk

OP all your food choices & portions sound absolutely standard.

I agree that the weight seems massively at odd with her age but you are correctly going to discuss this with your HCP and you can then take it from there.

Some of the dietary advice here is mad.

AReallyUsefulEngine · 24/04/2022 21:43

i know she’s not overeating

But she is. By your own admission she eats 2 slices of bread for a sandwich, which is more than a portion of bread for DD at this age. 1/2-1 medium slice according to this link and 3/4 of a medium slice according to this one.

Having a sandwich at lunch with 2 slices of bread is not overeating !! Not when you look at the whole days food intake together

she doesn’t have ANY snacks between meals
she doesn’t drink ANY milk only water !!!

goldsparklyChocolate · 24/04/2022 21:48

When she has houmous in her sandwich it is a thin spread of prob 1.5-2 teaspoons and then grated carrot - no butter I really don’t think she is eating too much at all. I will discuss with the hv because I really don’t feel that her weight is due to her food intake is be the first to admit it if she was snacking lots or still having formula for example but she isn’t

This link has got some very odd portion sizes.

A 3 year old’s portion size of sausage is half a sausage?! And half a slice of bread?

AReallyUsefulEngine · 24/04/2022 21:50

Well clearly either DD is overeating or there is a medical condition that needs attention otherwise she wouldn’t be so overweight. And I say that as someone who is overweight.

goldsparklyChocolate · 24/04/2022 21:53

The 50/50 bread is 94 calories per slice I’ve just checked. I really don’t think that it would be making that much of a difference

Im not making any changes till I’ve had professional advice because I do not believe her food intake is the cause of any problem if there is one because it’s not a lot of food. My other dc at this age would snack a lot - she doesn’t and I’ve not had any concerns re her food intake if anything the lack of milk was a worry for me

Bytrgrewd · 24/04/2022 21:56

Just checking you’re not trying to do the tabs up around her tummy instead of her hips?

goldsparklyChocolate · 24/04/2022 22:00

she was only 6lb at birth and was not big at all and quite sicky at first then at 3 months we changed to anti reflux milk and she started drinking lots more and from then just got bigger but as advised by hv we stopped formula at 12 months - she still had a bedtime bottle till 12.5 months then we stopped but she hated cows milk 🤷‍♀️ It wasn’t like she had hungry baby milk ever just anti reflux but I don’t think that would have caused her size and she’s not had any for months so if it was that it wouldn’t be the case now.
we didn’t wean till 6.5 months as tried at 6 and she wasn’t interested at all so stopped then started again

MrsMiddleMother · 24/04/2022 22:01

Good thing you'll be speaking to hv tomorrow, they'll be able to help. My 3 year old weighs around the same and wears pampers pullups in size 7 (for bed but still) which are a good size so defo try them

MuchTooTired · 24/04/2022 22:06

My DTs were in size 8 pampers and outgrew them. I switched to Huggies training pants which were useless and expensive, so gave Sainsburys size 6 pull up pants. They’re great, really absorbent and extremely reasonably priced. My DTs are 4 now and only in them at night time now.
