Are you thinking about cancelling Netflix?

I know loads of people are, I am too. I'm just wondering what the kids watch on it and wondering if we can get friends somewhere else.

None of us really watch TV at all, we have a cursory scroll through about once a week and then put on friends.

I'm keeping netflix but getting rid of Disney plus and amazon prime.

INeedNewShoes · 24/04/2022 20:38

I cancelled mine after Christmas when I was feeling hard up. I watch a total of around 2 hours of TV a week, and that tends to be watching a film with DD.

On the rare occasion I fancy watching something, I can usually find something on iPlayer.

I did love The Queen's Gambit though...

Rather selfishly, I'm posting again to remind myself to watch the second half of Ozark season 4 when it drops next Friday, before my membership ends a week later. It's very good.

Can't wait! That's my bank holiday weekend sorted.

I have Netflix but personally don't use it much. I'm another of those naughty people that share logins. My sister has my deets so that my niece and nephew can watch the kids channel. If they do adverts and/or block account sharing then I will cancel as £10.99 for a streaming service with adverts is a piss take.

PersonaNonGarter · 24/04/2022 21:19

We have Netflix, Prime, Disney and Apple TV. Of these, we watch them all but Apple TV, which is just rubbish. I keep meaning to cancel it.

Netflix is good. All the people saying they will cancel if the clamp down on sharing are talking bollocks. The subscription costs less than two cinema tickets. Most people will pay it.

One of my friends would disagree with you about AppleTV, she thinks it’s fantastic 🤣. I think they don’t have much on there compared to the likes of Netflix, but they probably have a lot more quality shows. If you haven’t already done so I suggest watching - The Morning Show, Ted Lasso, Mythic Quest and I’m currently really enjoying Slow Horses. My friend keeps trying to get me to watch Severance, but that looks well weird. The films Greyhound and Finch are also very good and I keep meaning to get round to watching Coda

NightmareSlashDelightful · 25/04/2022 09:57

I agree, Apple TV is just taking its time to get going as regards content. Slow Horses is absolutely brilliant, and well worth a watch if you've not tried it. Kristin Scott Thomas being magnificently Kristin Scott Thomas.

They are trying to get you to watch Severance because it is LITERALLY the best thing that has been on TV for ages. My jaw dropped repeatedly and I screamed at the last episode.

It is amazing

FairyLightAddict · 25/04/2022 10:01

Nope. I love Netflix

I’ve watched the first episode, I’ll keep at it then in the hopes that it gets better 🤣

Not cancelling Netflix (got rid of multiroom a little while ago, so only on their basic one now), have just cancelled Disney+ and Starz
Am planning to move between different ones, having a plan of what things we want to watch.
Mostly we have been watching Prime and Free channels, but I am planning to watch a couple of things on Netflix then will get rid so probably next month. Will probably reinstate Disney+ for the summer holidays as it will likely get viewed a lot more. We don't get a lot of time to watch. I tend to watch an episode a night, but as I get the prime stuff free with prime for Amazon deliveries (which I won't be getting rid of as use frequently) then that's basically a bonus/freebie for us. Not only that it has a lot of great stuff on there. I've still got many series lined up. If I actually did the maths I reckon prime has enough content for me personally to not need any for at least another year or so 😂

CatsArePeople · 25/04/2022 14:44

Cancelled already. I only ever have it for a couple of months a year over Xmas, or if there is some exciting content. Otherwise its crap.

xraydelta · 25/04/2022 15:19

*The problem with Netflix is that by increasing the price , but having increasingly worse content, actively choosing to subscribe doesn’t seem like a good choice. A lot of people are with Netflix solely due to inertia and the cost being acceptable based on sharing. If Netflix choose to clamp down on profile sharing they seem to be banking on 100 accounts converting to 300 accounts. From what I’ve seen both online and speaking to friends is almost no one who is using someone else’s account would sign up themselves. And without being able to share the account, many original account holder will cancel too. Especially as the only 4K plan is the one where you have four simultaneous devices watching, so there’s no discount for reducing the number of people with your login.

Of course Netflix can clamp down on this. It’s their service and they can set their terms of use. But that doesn’t mean that users can’t just decide that the new terms don’t work for them and stop subscribing.*

That's fine! As one of the 100 in your example, I am at risk of leaving at the moment because I don't think I should be subsiding the other 200 people who are not paying because they are sharing with their half sister's mother's husband.

I would be willing to pay MORE (slightly!) for a system that is fair and not abused by extended family sharing that drives up the costs for the rest of us.

I don't know how they'll manage with students and with holidaying families but I am confident Netflix and other subscription providers can figure out a more fair system. Maybe less per person, but paying per user? Or proving the credentials of a travelling student teen?

But what's unsustainable is for those with large friendly extended families getting stuff for free. I can't think how anyone thinks this isn't morally wrong? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ffs. This damn new app is driving me bonkers 🙄 Sorry for the double post and not being able to reply properly @toastofthetown

Southeastdweller · 25/04/2022 15:30

But Netflix have encouraged sharing passwords so they’ve only got themselves to blame for this mess.

As @Southeastdweller has pointed out, this isn't people sneakily gaming the system again Netflix's will or knowledge. They have actively encouraged it (picture is a Netflix tweet). Netflix have already accounted for different accounts having more or less users as the cheapest plan only allows one device to watch at once and the most expensive allows up to four - people sharing accounts are already paying a premium. And you can only have four viewing at a time, so it's inherently limited.

I guess I just really don’t see why password sharing would bother you because don’t see the difference it makes to you or Netflix if I live apart from my parents and share my password with them, or if I live with my parents and share my password with them. Or if I don’t share a password and they come around for ten hours each weekend to watch Netflix at my house. I don’t see any of it as morally wrong, in the same way that I don’t see lending a book or DVD to a friend or family member is morally wrong.

I also think you hold a very rare position being willing to accommodate another price rise for Netflix because the most recent increase many to cancel, even without the planned crackdown. Now we're coming out the pandemic TV watching is less important, cost of living is increasing, Netflix's charges are increasing, content is less and lower quality, more competitors are out there which has resulted in Netflix haemorrhaging subscribers.

Are you thinking about cancelling Netflix?
xraydelta · 25/04/2022 17:43

@toastofthetown I see Netflix tweet meaning love is living together and sharing a password. I didn't think it meant sharing it on your fourth date 😁

I pay for the expensive multi screen access even though it's only for people in my immediate family (in my house) as I have teenagers (plural) and they often will watch something individually on their laptops or iPads if I am watching the TV. If there were more options other than the ones Netflix do, that would be helpful and useful when they do rejig membership.

It's been eye opening for me as it's very clear on the Netflix terms and conditions it's for "one household". That's just not like sharing books or DVDs. It's akin to sharing the same gym membership.

BUT if If it's all that common and nobody else thinks it immoral, clearly I don't have any family and friends so would someone like to share their password with me so I don't need to pay for a bit? 😆

StuckInTheMiddleOfNowhere · 25/04/2022 17:52

Keeping it. The dcs all use it.

Flatbrokefornow · 25/04/2022 17:56

Not cancelled yet, but going down to a one device account. I hardly ever watch anything (at all) and DD watches way more utube. It’d be a shame, because it’s the single nonessential we’ve got left (I’ve got national trust and prime, but can only cancel them yearly. Don’t have Disney, don’t have a tv licence even) I’d keep it otherwise - it’s our only paid entertainment and it’s good value for kids, and it’s not like the few quid it costs is actually going stop us going into the red, so it seems a bit pointless cancelling a 7 quid sub and expecting it to somehow mitigate a £100 a month energy price rise….

I’ll likely pause it for a few months and then pick it up and binge for a while. Well DD will. They do have good quality stuff sometimes.

mycatisannoying · 25/04/2022 18:24

I'd rather keep Netflix than Amazon. It could be that my TV is an older model, but I just find Prime so clunky to use.

Money4icecream · 25/04/2022 19:28

We are cancelling ours at the end of the month after the last series of Ozark is released. Ozark and Bridgerton are the only things I have enjoyed for ages so I can't justify the cost anymore.
