Are you thinking about cancelling Netflix?

I know loads of people are, I am too. I'm just wondering what the kids watch on it and wondering if we can get friends somewhere else.

None of us really watch TV at all, we have a cursory scroll through about once a week and then put on friends.

I cancelled mine last week. A 17% price increase is ridiculous, the content is good but not great apart from The Crown. Much of the stuff from ‘yesteryear’ is great but I’ve seen it all back in the 90s and 2000s and I’m not a big rewatcher. It just isn’t worth £10.99 a month anymore.

But I’ll be signing up again for a month in November for the new season of The Crown. Probably the most expensive package as I expect the other ones will have ads included by then.

Startuplife · 24/04/2022 09:02

No but I did ask DP to check whether his family actually use our account and if not to downgrade it to the basic package.

The one id really love to get rid of is BT. We have a smart TV so only have it for the sport but nothing DP is interested in ever seems to be shown. Combined with the internet it’s costing us a fortune and they’re totally uninterested in negotiating the price. As soon as Community Fibre is up and running in our area I’ll be cancelling the whole thing.

We use it a fair bit, but if they start blocking login sharing I will cancel it - there are 4 people in my family but 3 are students living elsewhere most of the time. They're still part of my family and if Netflix stops me from sharing with them, I'm gone.

I agree that I'll be unhappy if they do this.
Dd is a student so lives elsewhere for certain parts of the year. She's still part of our family and for parts of the year she lives in our family home. I don't want to pay twice for every tv subscription.

No, we are retired so have plenty of time to watch stuff, we have the one that is £10.99, I wish they would do a cheaper yearly option. I have also just spent £16 of Tesco Clubcard points for a year of Disney +. I pay for Apple TV and Prime yearly as it is cheaper, BritBox I have when they give me an offer, We also have had Sky since it started.

Anyone that does not use it much is probably better to buy the odd month then catch up then

DogInATent · 24/04/2022 09:25

Ditched Netflix a few months ago. We weren't watching it, and all that ever seemed to happen was that the price kept going up. Kept Prime, as that has a broader range of benefits as well as decent video content.

We watch more Youtube than Netflix content, I'm hoping that the Youtube Premium Light service will come to the UK. Really enjoyed a 3 month free trial with no adverts, but £12/month seems a bit steep for the current subscription offer in the UK.

Some weeks we watch more German tv than UK tv, and all that has cost us was a second dish and decoder over ten years ago.

TokyoTen · 24/04/2022 09:27

No we won't be cancelling. We don't watch it a lot, but nice to have stuff available when we want it.

toastofthetown · 24/04/2022 09:27

I don’t have my own Netflix. My sister shares her Netflix with me and I share Prime & Disney Plus with her. If they crack down on household sharing, I won’t subscribe myself as I don’t use it enough. Maybe if something we want to watch comes on I might subscribe for a month. I would be surprised if that wasn’t the majority viewpoint.

But with increasing prices, decreasing quality of content and talks of ad supported subscriptions it’s hardly an enticing option these days.

Skinterior · 24/04/2022 09:29

Yep. And a few others. If there's something that turns up that we might like we might sign up again.

Keeping Amazon and Disney, only for prime and because we've paid annually.

Shinyandnew1 · 24/04/2022 09:34

I have no plans to cancel at the moment but we have two kids at university-if they start saying they can’t use our Netflix account, we will cancel.

vinoandbrie · 24/04/2022 09:36

We have Disney+, Netflix, and Amazon because we pay for the delivery. We’re not big TV watchers though!

We wouldn’t get rid of Amazon as it’s free effectively as we’d pay for the annual delivery fee anyway.

With Disney+ we got it for the first lockdown. I was on the verge of cancelling after a year, but then realised that it does actually have content that’s not for kids, so kept it for that.

The issue is that the rare thing I watch (say Ozark on Netflix) I really enjoy. I also enjoyed the Queen’s Gambit, and the odd thing like that, especially in Covid times.

Now we’re hopefully out the other end of lockdowns, I might review over the next few months how much anyone’s using Disney+ / Netflix and whether it’s worth keeping them on.

Irishfarmer · 24/04/2022 09:42

No, we don't have sky just free channels and watch it a lot. We do also have prime because of DHs business might look at using that more.

I thought about cancelling Audible but I really do love my audio books and get a lot of joy out of them so I'm keeping it.

TBF it's one of very very few 'luxuries' we have can't deny ourselves everything

xraydelta · 24/04/2022 09:46

Shocked at how many people on this thread are sharing with sisters/parents or whatever 😆 That's the issue Netflix have. That's literally the problem.

I hope subscription services DO clamp down on multiple users. They owe that to the single family groups who pay for subscriptions. Ditto clamping down on people using VPNs and complicated prepaid gift card payments to score cheaper subscriptions from other countries.

If Netflix can find a way for single family groups to be able to watch it while on holiday and yet prevent aunts, parents, extended family and random friends from abusing that, that's surely the solution? 🤷🏻‍♀️

On the question, I am monitoring how much my teens are using Netflix, Amazon, Disney, BritBox etc. I frequently cancel subscriptions for a few months until they moan or there's something new they want to watch.

ImInStealthMode · 24/04/2022 09:49

We're keeping Netflix and considering whether to cancel Disney+ (but probably not until after the Kardashians series has all aired Blush).

I dip in and out of Now TV as and when there's something to watch. They are very good with 'please don't cancel' discounts.

I find there's not much interests us on Prime, and it annoys me that you have to pay extra for so much of the content.

boatyardblues · 24/04/2022 09:51

I mainly watch subtitled international content on Netflix so it complements iplayer and gives me access to content I can’t get on other platforms. When I was still watching their US/UK output there were a lot of lookalike, lazy subpar films and series. If you broaden your horizons you can pick and choose the best content from other parts of the world and it stays fresh. I can see how you could get bored but that hasn’t been a problem for me for the last few years.

Spudlet · 24/04/2022 09:55

We did ages ago. We've kept Disney+ for now, but I've started buying secondhand DVDs on ebay of favourite films for ds so we can cancel that if necessary.

We might resubscribe if there's something we particularly want to see - I love The Witcher so if and when season 3 is out we might get it then. But we won't keep it because a lot of what's on there doesn't interest us.

SarahShorty · 24/04/2022 09:55

I cancelled mine after the Cuties debacle. I have Amazon Prime video, YouTube Premium and a NAS (Network Accessible Storage) chocked full of movies and TV series. So basically I don't watch any live television 😄 I'll need to come up with entertainment ideas when (hopefully) my children come along. Still TTC but don't want to derail the chat topic.

LetHimHaveIt · 24/04/2022 09:56

No. It's still - just about -
worth it, to me.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 24/04/2022 10:12

No. We don’t go out very often, dont drink, my working adult son has prime and Disney which he shares with us and his siblings, we have it on top layer as we then share with him and our other two. Got Apple on 3 month free trial to watch Slow Horses and Severance.

doublemonkey · 24/04/2022 10:26

Haven't found much to watch on there for quite a while so very well might.

The problem with Netflix is that by increasing the price , but having increasingly worse content, actively choosing to subscribe doesn’t seem like a good choice. A lot of people are with Netflix solely due to inertia and the cost being acceptable based on sharing. If Netflix choose to clamp down on profile sharing they seem to be banking on 100 accounts converting to 300 accounts. From what I’ve seen both online and speaking to friends is almost no one who is using someone else’s account would sign up themselves. And without being able to share the account, many original account holder will cancel too. Especially as the only 4K plan is the one where you have four simultaneous devices watching, so there’s no discount for reducing the number of people with your login.

Of course Netflix can clamp down on this. It’s their service and they can set their terms of use. But that doesn’t mean that users can’t just decide that the new terms don’t work for them and stop subscribing.

It’s also not clear how this household management would work? If I’m at home and my husband is in a hotel can we both still watch Netflix? How would it work in a family where one member lives somewhere else for the week for work and comes home for the weekend, and how can Netflix tell the difference between that and someone giving their parents their password.

Dvds from charity shops are a lot cheaper in the long run

You have to have a means of playing them though.

Efortyjive · 24/04/2022 10:47

Going to keep it until stranger things has finished. Thing is they have peaked I think. They did have lots of really great content and it was affordable, they got greedy and started making worse, but bigger budget things with better known actors in but worse storylines. As they've been counting their money and easing off the gas other streaming services have started which offer better value.

BigWoollyJumpers · 24/04/2022 10:49

God no. Would love to cancel BBC and never watch other standard channels much either. DD1 pays for Netflix and Now, DD2 pays for Disney+, and DH pays for Amazon Prime. We all use each others log ins.

Scarecrowrowboat · 24/04/2022 10:49

Yes. We mainly use Disney as we watch it more and can use Clubcard vouchers to pay.

User7493268965 · 24/04/2022 10:58

Disney plus is 6 months on Clubcard instead of 3 months, on offer until April 29th, I bought 2 lots as you can use them until August next year. In case anyone hadn't seen it.
