Diversity in the workplace - why am I not included?

As I watch a new set of corporate videos, I realise that I am not represented in them. They are full of young attractive smartly/business casually dressed people of a range of ethnic diversity.

Yet my colleagues are generally 50+ white and grey and wear WFH clothes. As am I. We are not board level.

AIBU to feel invisible?

Anatomy of a Scandal is the No 1 trending programme on Netflix at the moment. All the main characters are white.

SleepingStandingUp · 21/04/2022 21:45

I can't remember the last (fictional) drama where all the main characters were white
Bht that's normal life for lots of us. All Ds's school life - his best friend is Indian, one of the lads is mixed (mom is duel heritage, dad is white), two little girls are white British, one is white other, one little girl in black, one little boy is white British.... My friendship group from school, five white British, one British Asian, my volunteer group is literally a dictionary definition of "diversity", Easter camp is run by a married couple - Asian man, white woman (three kids at home).
Rather than ethnic diversity being a big lie, maybe some of you just have very small-world lives

SleepingStandingUp · 21/04/2022 21:47

Lower than the makeup of the country but higher than London and Birmingham and plenty of other cities

SleepingStandingUp · 21/04/2022 21:48

For the love of God, some of you had better not watch Brigerton 😂

This fucking place becomes more racist by the day. All you poor old white folk who dare not speak out because of us woke lefties, what the hell are you doing here? You’re speaking out just like you have done for hundreds of years. You poor wee souls, your still not underrepresented in the cinema, the workplace or even on television. God forbid people who have suffered racism, under representation, wrongful stop and search harassment, wrongful arrest should be getting a go. 😡

LegMeChicken · 22/04/2022 03:49

’Representation’ in ads, media and cinema, apart from having people who look like them (was so excited to by the Bridgerton leads!) is also presumably so that talented British born people get w chance in the media no matter their colour!
There is over representation in ads however (mostly black and white people, rarely Asians).

In corporate videos - who cares?
People in ads are supposed to look good.
and a lot of places with nice videos are racist, misogynistic and whatever.

Btw this ‘neurodiversity’ representation is stupid. What does a neurodiverse person look like anyway. LOL

LegMeChicken · 22/04/2022 03:51

Also OP YABU. Videos are just that, a marketing tool. Loads of ‘tech bro’ startups have diverse videos but won’t listen to the female devs, even if she’s more qualified than all of them.
’true story’

FayCarew · 22/04/2022 11:06

@LegMeChicken , yes. i am over 50 and a woman and find that young men struggle with the idea that i might have been hired for my expertise

What happens if the people in the video are non-white, middle aged AND disabled? Are they okay being in the video then?

Yes, it would be good to see it represented
