How much should parents pay towards holiday?

We are going on holiday with my parents. We got 2free child places so effectively kids are accounted for. We have 2 rooms, 4 adults 2 kids. my parents want to pay half but I still think that's unfair somehow. How much would you expect them to pay?

There was this scenario a few months ago. I think someone checks how much your DPs would have paid if they booked on their own and pay that, which may be somewhat less than half.
Do you think they should be paying more or less than half ?

DropYourSword · 18/04/2022 13:44

Why do you think it's unfair?

ZenNudist · 18/04/2022 13:45

Half surely? Kids are free you get a room each, no brainer

I also don't understand the issue - the kids are free so it's easy???

hellcatspangle · 18/04/2022 13:47

Depends on the situation - maybe your parents want to pay more than they should as they see it as paying towards their grandchildren's holiday, or if they've got more disposable income want to help you out?

Are the kids sharing a room with you? If so half is fair anyway as you're getting a room per household.

Sswhinesthebest · 18/04/2022 13:48

Half

Marblessolveeverything · 18/04/2022 13:48

Half . Mind you I would look at three rooms to have some privacy.

RosaBaby2 · 18/04/2022 13:52

They want to pay half let them pay half.

RandomQuest · 18/04/2022 13:52

Half makes perfect sense. Why would it be unfair and who would it be unfair on? If you want to sub your parents out of generosity or because they’re helping you out with the kids then that’s something else entirely.

PaperTyger · 18/04/2022 13:53

I would have done it based on who has more cash flow.
If all equal then do it equal.
If parents are loaded then surely they would pay a little more?
Most loaded parents I know Just pay for the whole thing because they enjoy holiday with their adult DC and their gc?

Only one utter tight arse wanted their adult DC to pay accmd ( air flights free due to points!)

Certainly with mine the end goal is to all go away so it's who can afford what. As an adult dp treated me but then I also treated back
DH family much weeltiher and they pin everything down

PearPickingPorky · 18/04/2022 13:53

Half seems fair enough.

Obviously you'll pay two thirds of all meals etc.

PigeonMail · 18/04/2022 13:55

Why do you think it’s not half?

Alfiemoon1 · 18/04/2022 13:55

Half seems fair why do you think it isn’t fair ?

BlancmanegeBunny · 18/04/2022 13:58

50/50 sounds fair?

LosingTheWill2022 · 18/04/2022 13:58

Can you clarify in what way you think them paying half is "unfair"?

nearlyspringyay · 18/04/2022 14:01

Do they have the same room as you or is yours bigger to accommodate the kids in a separate area?

iklboo · 18/04/2022 14:02

Unfair on whom? You or them?

cabansunset · 18/04/2022 14:08

50/50 (2 adults in each room) kids are free.

Do you think your parents should benefit from the free children's places? (E.g you pay 70% they pay 30%) I don't because they're having a room to themselves.

FinnRussell · 18/04/2022 14:09

Half of accommodation. I'm assuming kids share a room with you and DPs are in their own room? Pay your own food and drink, you pay for kids? Are you thinking you should pay more because they'll help with childcare?

user75 · 18/04/2022 14:10

When we did this we paid half on accomodation but we paid for more food and meals when we were away and treated my mum to some activities

TolkiensFallow · 18/04/2022 14:27

Half? If the kids are free then you just split it between the adults.

WhereWasThatFrom · 18/04/2022 14:38

If they are little kids then I think 50/50 sounds ok. Why do you think it doesn't?

JimmyShoo · 18/04/2022 14:41

Have you got the second free place because your parents are going?

IncompleteSenten · 18/04/2022 14:42

Kids are free so £cost of accommodation ÷ 4 adults = £ for each person to pay.

Unless they are having one or both of your children in with them for all or part of the holiday in which case you should pay more.

zafferana · 18/04/2022 14:44

I would work out the cost based on per room, which is half. That is what they'd be paying if they went on their own, isn't it? So that's fair.
