Anyone else done washing today?

I never wash on Good Friday, not because of religious reasons (I've no Catholic family), but because my nan told me not to. She even once told me off for washing on Easter Monday!

I've all sorts of weird superstitions/obsessive rituals, that I've had therapy for, but have never really shaken.

I washed once on NYD, that year my youngest died, so I blamed myself.

This added to the feelings of unease over GF, but, despite not doing it, I've lost two very, very close family members over the last two years...so not washing on GF has not helped me.

Having had our kitchen recently refitted, I'm still playing catch-up with the washing. Our bedding hasn't been done for weeks, as I've had school and work uniforms to do, and the weather hasn't been brilliant.

So today I've washed our bedding...please tell me I'm not alone.

I will add that finding out that you're not supposed to do any housework, not just washing, has made it easier, as there is no way I'm not washing-up!

Yep, the bedding was all out by 8am. None tomorrow or Sunday (we have visitors and plans for both days) but no doubt I’ll have at least three loads on Mondays once guests leave.

Ninananna · 15/04/2022 17:12

My mum always said no laundry on Good Friday as you washed one in and washed one out. I have not tempted fate today!

JadeSeahorse · 15/04/2022 17:25

Well I'm Irish Catholic - although now lapsed - and this is new to me. (Plus I'm pretty old 😂)

Done my usual Friday chores. Beds stripped/all linens washed and beds freshly remade plus I deep clean the house every Friday morning and I mowed the front lawn today too. (DH mowed back lawn - huge - yesterday👍)

Never eat meat on Fridays though! I think that rule died out over 40 years ago in the Catholic church but I still adhere to it. Yes, I am definitely old! 🤣🤣🤣

Fabulous weather here and the puppy puked on his bed, so no choice, really. I’ve never heard this about Good Friday and I’m Catholic. Tradition=being told what to do by dead people, as I said to my mate who is sick of being told she MUST do certain things at her wedding because of tradition. Break the cycle!

Rowgtfc72 · 15/04/2022 17:34

On my third load now.
I do get twitchy about washing on new years day though.

Savingpeoplehuntingthings · 15/04/2022 17:37

I know about this superstition but I've done my washing and I've eaten meat. Ah well..

userxx · 15/04/2022 17:41

@Greatoutdoors

I forgot it was Good Friday and have not only done the washing but had a bacon butty too. I’m going to hell, aren’t I?

I've done washing and had a BBQ. Shit.

SouperNoodle · 15/04/2022 18:03

2 loads today so far

MenaiMna · 15/04/2022 18:10

Sounds like your nan was overworked and made this up to get some time off! Goodness! You doing washing or housework on the right or wrong day has nothing to do with deaths in your family. Please stop taking blame for that-perhaps you can access some therapy to help you reframe these experiences? I'm very sorry for your losses and hope that happy memories will bring you comfort.

Blimecory · 15/04/2022 18:14

I’ve not heard of this one, but I suppose it must hark back to times where no work was meant to be done on a Sunday, and Good Friday is a much more important day than a regular Sunday, so I suppose it fits. My MIL would have no flowers in the house over Lent. But Easter Sunday-flowers or budding twigs galore.

Pixiedust1234 · 15/04/2022 19:12

Oh rats. Its 7pm so too late to stop now. Six loads washed, line dried and finished off in tumble dryer. Its now glaring at me to put away. Perhaps the laundry pile will topple over and smother me. That'll teach me to wash on Good Friday Shock

I was raised a Catholic and never have I heard of this - please do not worry.
WildRosie · 15/04/2022 20:30

Yes. Two loads. Bed linen to do tomorrow. Can't waste a good drying day!

Crunchymum · 15/04/2022 20:38

Been out since 8.30am and just in through the door now. Have put a quick wash on as kids got filthy today.

I don't ever do washing on NYD (usually way too hung over as opposed to believing the superstitions)

I'm sorry for your losses - particularly losing a child - but washing on NYD didn't cause this Flowers

ABitOfAShitShow · 15/04/2022 20:41

I’ve washed! Darks, in case that matters! Grin I’ve never heard that anyone thinks you shouldn’t. (Not that I’m religious.)

I had pepperoni on a pizza too…And leftover chicken curry. I assume Jesus doesn’t like that either - based on the bacon sandwich comment?
