Anyone else done washing today?

I never wash on Good Friday, not because of religious reasons (I've no Catholic family), but because my nan told me not to. She even once told me off for washing on Easter Monday!

I've all sorts of weird superstitions/obsessive rituals, that I've had therapy for, but have never really shaken.

I washed once on NYD, that year my youngest died, so I blamed myself.

This added to the feelings of unease over GF, but, despite not doing it, I've lost two very, very close family members over the last two years...so not washing on GF has not helped me.

Having had our kitchen recently refitted, I'm still playing catch-up with the washing. Our bedding hasn't been done for weeks, as I've had school and work uniforms to do, and the weather hasn't been brilliant.

So today I've washed our bedding...please tell me I'm not alone.

I will add that finding out that you're not supposed to do any housework, not just washing, has made it easier, as there is no way I'm not washing-up!

Yes, two loads, it's a lovely drying day here.

Not religious and not superstitious, both seem equally bonkers to me, far too imaginary restrictions.

Really sorry for your loss OP but I can guarantee it was nothing to do when you did your laundry.

dottydodah · 15/04/2022 14:41

Never heard of this OP.On my second lot now .Also what about Hotels,Hospitals and people with a bloody grubby lot to wash for (Me!)

PuppyMonkey · 15/04/2022 14:41

I was brought up Catholic and can confirm beyond any doubt that it is literally all a load of old bollocks if that helps at all.

Have done laundry today. TBF I tend not to do any on New Year’s Day due usually to being too hungover.Wink

Sorry about your losses OP.Flowers

PinkSyCo · 15/04/2022 14:42

OP I am so sorry for your loss, but you know deep down that it had nothing to do with you doing some washing right? I hope not anyway, because I am sitting in the garden listening to the washing flapping in the breeze as I type! I didn’t even know not being supposed to do it on GF or EM was a thing to be honest. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oddbobbyboo · 15/04/2022 14:42

Two loads done and third one in xx fourth one will be in after x

Lampzade · 15/04/2022 14:46

Op, my mum is a devout Catholic and has done two loads of washing today

TokyoTen · 15/04/2022 14:53

One load of towels currently in the tu.ble dryer and two lots of bedding on the line. It's a nice day so I'm taking advantage of drying weather. Never heard of days you can/can't wash on tbh.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 15/04/2022 14:54

I have. I wet the bed last night Blush I had to put the bedding through the wash. I have never heard about a rule not to do washing/ housework on GF before so didn’t even occur to me not to.

thecurtainsofdestiny · 15/04/2022 14:57

Yes I washed the bedding today.

Only learned on Mumsnet about not doing washing at New Year/ on Good Friday and am too old to take on any new ( to me) superstitions.

katicomps · 15/04/2022 15:00

Never heard of any superstitions around washing.
We've just got back from a week long caravan holiday so I think the washer is on its 5th load today.
It's very overcast and unsafe looking but it's all out on the line!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 15/04/2022 15:01

I’ve done 3 loads.
Do you think that’s enough to wash my ‘d’ H away? I’ve had a complete guts full of him tbh.
If not i’’ll strip the ends again even though I only did them the other day….

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 15/04/2022 15:12

I don't wash on nyd beciase I heard hat stupid superstition as well but I have put a wash on today.

UselessTrees · 15/04/2022 15:15

My nan had a million of these. Apparently if you do washing on Good Friday your blood will turn to water! Confused

Having done two loads and survived I think we can safely say it's bollocks.

UselessTrees · 15/04/2022 15:16

(Or maybe it was your water will turn to blood, no idea really!)

Trulyweird1 · 15/04/2022 15:24

@Abra1d1
Thanks for that explanation ; clearly it’s more than just bacon then.

I was vaguely aware of Catholic friends always eating fish on Fridays, but was misinterpreting the comments on the thread as relating specifically to bacon!

Hope you and yours have a joyful Easter, however you choose to spend it.

Player456 · 15/04/2022 15:25

Thank you all Flowers

So glad I put my washing on. Shit things happen everyday and it is ridiculous to think my actions have any effect, but I do have both bipolar and personality disorders/PTSD, so tend to try to control what is in my control, even if it makes no sense, but it ultimately makes me unhappy.

I feel strangely liberated to have gone against years of inbuilt anxiety.

Strangely my nan only conferred these superstitions on the females in the family, I loved her dearly, but in her day things were less understood and more dire.

I've done three loads today! It's a great drying day where I am today! (And my nan never did washing on Good Friday, the days surrounding Christmas or NY either.)

1forAll74 · 15/04/2022 15:46

My late Mum used to have all these kind of odd superstitions, generally they were all handed down through previous generations.. Thankfully I never kept going with all these silly ideas. I once put an umbrella up in her kitchen, and she flipped out a bit, but forget why she thought it was a terrible thing to do.. I was basically checking the spoke things inside, as one was all bent, but she said i should have done it outside.

muddyford · 15/04/2022 15:49

I did a load of towels. My mother never did laundry on Good Friday when I was growing up , but she does now.

You have a great Easter too!

MisguidedSheep · 15/04/2022 16:13

I have! My momma always stuck by this rule and we weren't catholic or religious. We'd also never have meat on Good Friday.

Crinkle77 · 15/04/2022 16:14

I've done washing up and clothes washing. It's just superstitious nonsense OP.

ChiswickFlo · 15/04/2022 16:15

I've done 4 loads today

I've probably started the End times 😬🤣

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 15/04/2022 16:16

I never do washing on New Year’s Day or Good Friday. It’s one of those weird superstitions I’ve inherited from my (devout) Christian Mum.
“You’ll wash someone away!”. Apparently.

bellaiceberg · 15/04/2022 16:18

Ive always thought superstition is the mind's way of not having to take responsibility for it's own decisions. Like it takes the pressure of you having to think for yourself. Like a lot of religion really. It is like a relinquishing of personal power. And by power I mean life force, self awareness, knowledge,....not status or money.

My washing is on.
Here goes!
