Anyone else done washing today?

I never wash on Good Friday, not because of religious reasons (I've no Catholic family), but because my nan told me not to. She even once told me off for washing on Easter Monday!

I've all sorts of weird superstitions/obsessive rituals, that I've had therapy for, but have never really shaken.

I washed once on NYD, that year my youngest died, so I blamed myself.

This added to the feelings of unease over GF, but, despite not doing it, I've lost two very, very close family members over the last two years...so not washing on GF has not helped me.

Having had our kitchen recently refitted, I'm still playing catch-up with the washing. Our bedding hasn't been done for weeks, as I've had school and work uniforms to do, and the weather hasn't been brilliant.

So today I've washed our bedding...please tell me I'm not alone.

I will add that finding out that you're not supposed to do any housework, not just washing, has made it easier, as there is no way I'm not washing-up!

The sun is shining. I’m planning 4 loads. On the second already

itsgettingweird · 15/04/2022 12:59

I've never really of heard of GF but heard of NYD.

I'm on my 5th lot today - it's perfect drying weather!

fairyqueen · 15/04/2022 12:59

Had bacon sandwich, hung washing and walked to church. I’m a Christian and can’t imagine that God has any interest in my washing habits.

TheChosenTwo · 15/04/2022 12:59

I’ve done a couple of loads, I wash every day. Christmas Day is no exception, throw it In with some detergent, shut the door and press go. Then bung straight in the dryer!
Never heard that you’re not meant to wash on any particular day. Even if I did, I’ve got shit to do, things need to be done!

WakeMeUpWhenTheyHaveGone · 15/04/2022 13:13

Unfortunately everyday otherwise it’s builds up and we have work, DC and busy lives. I don’t revel in doing it; it just has to be done.

I’m not religious due to being force fed rubbish like this as a child that made absolutely no sense.

FleeceNavidadfromtheSheep · 15/04/2022 13:15

Never heard of it. Just about the hang my second load. It's glorious here.

billycat321 · 15/04/2022 13:24

It's a beautiful sunny day, what my mother would have called 'a good drying day'. I put on a load of washing, went to church for Good Friday meditation, came back and hung out the washing. Thunderbolts from heaven have not yet materialised!

Stuffin · 15/04/2022 13:25

I think this is about making sure they didn't do any chores on certain days when it was 'expected' on just about every other day.

However now days washing typically means shove clothes in washer, turn on, walk away which is much easier then it used to be when my DM or DGM was alive.

I too have done done washing today and did so on NYD which is often when I hear that superstition.

Trulyweird1 · 15/04/2022 13:26

Huh, what’s the issue with a bacon buttie? 😳 Too late, done washing, had the buttie.
I am having fish for dinner if that redresses the balance any?

Parker231 · 15/04/2022 13:30

Today is a Bank Holiday = no work. Today you can do anything you want to! I’ve just got up - going out for a late lunch and a BBQ this evening for good food and drink. Washing was done last night and now is in the tumble dryer

Tittyfilarious · 15/04/2022 13:32

I never let a good drying day go to waste Grin

clpsmum · 15/04/2022 13:33

I've never heard of this in my life and have done washing today as I do most days tbh

IcedOatLatte · 15/04/2022 13:36

How can it be BBQ weather but you're using the tumble dryer?

Unless you live in a flat or house with no outdoor area you should be struck down for that Shock

Sheilaroundthefountain · 15/04/2022 13:36

Jesus would want you to have clean bedding

ImInStealthMode · 15/04/2022 13:37

I've got a load in now and another waiting.

Never heard of this 'rule'.

JellyBunny · 15/04/2022 13:38

I've never heard of this OP but also from a superstitious family and lost my first child so possibly can relate to your thinking process.

Favouritefruits · 15/04/2022 13:40

I’ve done two loads and I’ve changed the bed so another one ready to go on once the drier has finished. I didn’t know you weren’t supposed to wash today.

Parker231 · 15/04/2022 13:41

@IcedOatLatte - can’t be bothered to put washing outside. We have a laundry room on the main bedroom floor and washing goes straight from the washing machine to the tumble dryer

badlydrawnbear · 15/04/2022 13:45

I have never heard that about not doing washing on good Friday and I am from a Catholic family. I have washed 3 loads, because the weather is good, we have been away for a few days so there is a lot to get through and the cat was sick on my blanket so I had to wash that. I also forgot that today was Friday and therefore good Friday, and ate meat which is something I was brought up not to do. Oh well. My DH died last year, and I no longer believe in religion or random superstitions, his death was just a shit thing that happened and, unfortunately, doing laundry or not or other similar things wouldn’t have changed that.

TommyShelby · 15/04/2022 13:45

Well we’ve done some colossal washing today due to a sick explosion from the youngest Shelby last night! I’m sure the person who came up with these rules didn’t have little sicky children to manage Grin if you’re doomed, then I am too OP so at least we’re all in it together lol

LouScot · 15/04/2022 13:46

What nonsense is this?! I'm Scottish and the only day you absolutely cannot do any washing AT ALL is New Year's Day. Even worse is washing AND HANGING IT OUT on New Year's Day. I've never heard of not washing on Good Friday and I've got a (mixed) Christian background.

(Joking, I'm not laughing at people's faith related traditions and thoughts to those who have had negative things happen when they've gone against these traditions. Wishing all a peaceful Easter, regardless of faith or non faith)

Hellocatshome · 15/04/2022 13:48

I do not understand Easter at all I dont know what happened on what day and what you are or are not supposed to do. So yes I did washing today and we are eating meat today as well which someone has also just told me is 'against the rules'.

Liamgallaghersparka · 15/04/2022 13:48

I thought it was just my family who did this! Blush.

LouScot · 15/04/2022 13:49

Oops just to clarify I don't believe any deaths have happened as a result of people breaking traditions x

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 15/04/2022 13:51

Yes, but I'm not religious or superstitious in any way.

I've done two loads of laundry, stripped and re-made the beds, washed the dishes, vacuumed and walked the dog so far Grin
