Anyone else done washing today?

I never wash on Good Friday, not because of religious reasons (I've no Catholic family), but because my nan told me not to. She even once told me off for washing on Easter Monday!

I've all sorts of weird superstitions/obsessive rituals, that I've had therapy for, but have never really shaken.

I washed once on NYD, that year my youngest died, so I blamed myself.

This added to the feelings of unease over GF, but, despite not doing it, I've lost two very, very close family members over the last two years...so not washing on GF has not helped me.

Having had our kitchen recently refitted, I'm still playing catch-up with the washing. Our bedding hasn't been done for weeks, as I've had school and work uniforms to do, and the weather hasn't been brilliant.

So today I've washed our bedding...please tell me I'm not alone.

I will add that finding out that you're not supposed to do any housework, not just washing, has made it easier, as there is no way I'm not washing-up!

I reckon women started these superstitions so that they could down tools certain days of the year.

Absolutely this.

These are tongue in cheek superstitions that women started centuries ago to lighten their workloads, so they weren’t expected to prepare a feast in addition to the normal chores, and could get a bit of down time.

Please OP as a remembrance of those women, act in their spirit and cut yourself some slack Smile. I am so very sorry for your losses, but there is no way that any deity will be punishing you for using the washing machine Flowers

Yep done a load today for work - which I’m about to take in for my shift later today.

Tlollj · 15/04/2022 13:58

Done 2 loads today. Bedding and towels. Just checked they’re nearly dry too.

RoseyLentil · 15/04/2022 13:59

Two loads out this morning- my work gear and all the towels and cloths. Cleaned the bathroom and had ham salad lunch - doomed 🤣

Musmerian · 15/04/2022 14:00

Couldn’t care less about Good Friday. I wash when I feel like it.

Mimilamore · 15/04/2022 14:01

Washed tons of cat bedding, they are feral and live in an awning. Too good an opportunity with the change in the weather and nothing better to do!!

viques · 15/04/2022 14:01

@Greatoutdoors

I forgot it was Good Friday and have not only done the washing but had a bacon butty too. I’m going to hell, aren’t I?
You can avoid hell if you eat three hot cross buns.
Abra1d1 · 15/04/2022 14:02

@Trulyweird1

Huh, what’s the issue with a bacon buttie? 😳 Too late, done washing, had the buttie. I am having fish for dinner if that redresses the balance any?
For many practising Catholics, Good Friday is a day of abstinence and fasting. No alcohol and no red meat. Obviously if you're not a practising Catholic, this doesn't apply.
CaptainCarp · 15/04/2022 14:02

Haven't ever heard of no washing today or the meat thing! Did know it was meant to be fish supper but we have a pie that needs eating so we are having that.

I'm currently on my 3rd load as I'm hoping to start washing baby stuff this weekend so getting ahead with the work clothes.

Also had bacon for breakfast.

Theoldwoman · 15/04/2022 14:03

I've never heard of that before OP.

I wash everyday, hate it backing up!

Today was a beautiful 28 deg, did everyones bedding!

bigbluebus · 15/04/2022 14:04

I've just pegged my 2nd load on the line. I was brought up as a Catholic - went to 2 Catholic schools - and have never heard this 'rule'. And I'm pretty sure my DM would have told me about it if it was!

Why do you assume that 'religious reasons' must refer to Roman Catholics? There are Protestant denominations existing too.

I have only ever heard of the not washing rule in regard to New Year's Day. It's a silly old superstition and I obey it absolutely Grin.

Topseyt · 15/04/2022 14:09

I did a load this morning and it is out on the line now.

I am also about to empty the dishwasher, which has recently finished.

oakleaffy · 15/04/2022 14:10

@Lacedwithgrace

I promise you, whoever or whatever controls the world does not take notice of your shower or washing machine
Exactly this. 'Easter'{Ostara} was once an ancient Pagan festival , and unlikely and Supreme Being will mind if we keep our clothes and bedding clean :)
oakleaffy · 15/04/2022 14:11

Edit: Unlikely any Supreme Being.

user1498572889 · 15/04/2022 14:12

I’ve done 5 machines of washing today. 😛

winnieanddaisy · 15/04/2022 14:12

I've done 3 loads this morning and it's out on the line . I won't be eating meat today though .

user1471538283 · 15/04/2022 14:13

I didnt know you were not supposed to! I've done four loads of laundry and I've scrubbed the apartment so it's nice for the weekend.

I always fully scrub on New Years Day to hopefully set the new year straight.

Maybe years ago if you were not working outside the home you could not use these days. Now though, most people have to do them when we can.

I'm sorry about your DC.

AliceMcK · 15/04/2022 14:14

On load 5. With a 4yo who has an entire zoo of soft toys in her bed and who started vomiting at 3am there isn’t a chance I’m leaving it to fester till tomorrow. My 8yo is now complaining of tummy ache so I suspect there is going to be a lot more washing done this weekend.

I’m Catholic but never heard the washing thing. Could well have been something my Nan did.

Paleodiet · 15/04/2022 14:14

I have never heard of such a Good Friday no washing “rule”. I have just put on a wash, mopped floors and will do some gardening this afternoon.

bakewellbride · 15/04/2022 14:14

I did 2 loads today.

Yaya26 · 15/04/2022 14:17

@Greatoutdoors

Me too @Greatoutdoors I am Catholic but forgot and made myself and two of the kids bacon butties.

@Player456 I never heard of no laundry on NYD or GF. I have been working my way through a mountain of washing today. It would be shame to waste that good drying!😁

worriedatthistime · 15/04/2022 14:30

Yes why are you not supposed to

SockFluffInTheBath · 15/04/2022 14:33

Well I’ve got a full washing line so it’s a bit late!

DH is into this rubbish, had a hissy at me many moons ago for washing on New Year’s Day and said I would wash a member of my family away. I said as long as it’s my dad, that’s fine. He died that summer. DH has never really got over it, he thinks I’m some sort of spell casting witch 😂

TheMoreYouKnow · 15/04/2022 14:35

It'll be fine. Its just another superstition like not stepping on pavement cracks. Let it go. Someone made it up years ago. Breathe.......Flowers
