To not understand the need for "walks"

walkingDisaster22 · 14/04/2022 18:06

Anyone else similar to me and not understand the need for walks or enjoyment in walking.
My in laws are obsessed with walking and think i'm odd (or maybe a sloth!) for not wanting to go out daily walking.
Where is the enjoyment in mud and rain? I would rather chill with a good book. Please tell me I'm not on my own?

@MrsSkylerWhite wow that’s a sales pitch if anyone needed one. How far do you walk?

Benjispruce4 · 14/04/2022 22:41

When we got our dog I notice that my legs changed shape from the daily 45 brisk walks. Definitely slimmed thighs and kept weight off.

Wasn’t meant to be 🤣
The truth, though. I walk a long way, about eight miles, five days out of seven but it’s absolutely true, my stomach is flat and tight after a lifetime of chubbiness.

It was far from easy, miserable on the worst rainy, windy, days (and on the NW coast they were seriously rainy and windy) but I’m so damned glad that I hung on in there.
Proviso: I was also sensible about what I ate: calorie controlled weekdays, relaxed at weekends, but I’m absolutely certain that the walking was key.
I kickstarted by signing up to the Moonwalk, so felt obliged to see it through. In the last month of training, I was walking 15 miles, three days each week (5 am starts 😱)

AnastasiaRomanov · 14/04/2022 22:49

I walk for about an hour and a half about four or five times a week. If I stop I really notice it. Mood, fitness, sleep, shape.

OverByYer · 14/04/2022 22:53

I love walking. I feel pent up if I don’t get out and walk or on nicer days run.
I love walking and listening to a good podcast. Best stress buster going.
Walking is great physical exercise and great for the mind too.

Benjispruce4 · 14/04/2022 22:54

Well done @MrsSkylerWhite that’s impressive.

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/04/2022 22:54

(I completed the Moonwalk in 6 hours, 12 minutes, was dead proud. Ate a bacon bap then walked to Euston Station from the finish at Clapham Common for my train home - had read that walking slowly for a few miles was much better for the muscles than sitting down afterwards, and it was true. My husband, at home looking after the kids, had bought me a first class ticket home so I sat in the Virgin lounge and ate all the free snacks I could stuff in for 30 minutes 😂😂).

Robin233 · 15/04/2022 04:13

@MrsSkylerWhite

Nope. A year of regular walking gave me a drum tight flat stomach for the first time in my life (of nearly 59 years).
^^^^
I've walked all my life
Similar age
Always had a wash board stomach - figured snapped back after children , who both love walking
Fresh air , clears your head.
It the way I meditate
Do an hour a day regularly- 2.5 miles
Also love reading and now gardening
Find swimming too cold and gym to strenuous lol
But walking is just out the door and free
I'm sure there's many other health benefits too.
I can see why people would find it boring but I'd be a basket case with out it

Walking intensely for years (nowhere near a gym, no other way to exercise) chunked my calves right up and I've never managed to get them down. Very glad it's worked for you but I think it did the very opposite for me!
CharSiu · 15/04/2022 09:48

I think the health aspect of walking is under estimated.
It’s impossible for me to do high impact sport anymore but I have always loved walking.

I grew up with a beach 5 mins from my front door and countryside a 20 mins walk away and have lived most of my life apart from a decade in Birmingham and London within 15 minutes of open fields and woodland Love seeing nature. We live right by The Peak District, we make a pack up and walk for miles not 20 like we used to but last week we did about 5.

"When we got our dog I notice that my legs changed shape from the daily 45 brisk walks. Definitely slimmed thighs and kept weight off."

I walk to work every day and it makes no change to shape of my legs or my weigh (I can compare with wfh in lockdown).

Benjispruce4 · 15/04/2022 12:12

I’ll count myself lucky then! I do walk briskly in walking boots up and down hills and it was my only exercise so can only attribute it to that.

Benjispruce4 · 15/04/2022 12:27

Though I think some people build muscle easier, I’m not one.

nosyupnorth · 15/04/2022 13:11

To use a trite phrase: if you're bored then you're boring!

I like to walk. I'll look at the scenery or what is going on in the neighbourhood depending on where I am, and I use it as time to think without being occupied by another activity which requires focus - walking is a great activity during which to reflect, plan, or daydream and I find my mind can flow and wander much better than if I am just sat like lump staring at one room.

ButtockUp · 15/04/2022 13:44

I'll take the dog for a walk but I'd never just go out for a walk.

TonTonMacoute · 15/04/2022 14:07

Google the benefits of walking, and they are clear to see.

You may not like going on walks but you must be as thick as mince if you don't understand what the 'point' is.

I like sitting down with a good book as much as the next person, but if you do it for too long it is very bad for you. I would rather go for a daily walk than have to rely on the NHS to care for my latter unhealthy years.

MrsDThomas · 15/04/2022 15:03

I love walking and running. I live in a stunning area and appreciate it so sitting on my arse all day is not something I would do. Exercise is good for the soul. I do a mountain most weekends and i will happily walk for miles

Lunaballoon · 15/04/2022 15:39

Walking is such a great way of engaging with other people without the distractions of phones, TV etc, so if PILs or DHs are suggesting going for walks it’s because they want to spend quality time with you and talk to you.

A lot of bonding and connecting can happen during a “so-called “pointless” walk. Don’t knock it!

Sammysquiz · 15/04/2022 16:06

I find walks are a great way to get my DC to open up about stuff. There’s something about being alongside each other & not the pressure of eye-contact, which means they’re more likely to chat about things which are bothering them,

EmeraldShamrock1 · 15/04/2022 16:14

I really enjoyed walking long distances.

I stopped about a year ago, it definitely made me feel great.

I must start again.

My DM lost her mobility in her 60's due to health issues and weight gain which became a vicious cycle in itself.

I want to enjoy my legs while they last.

Thanks for the motivation.

MrsBa · 15/04/2022 18:07

My in-laws like to go a long walk AFTER a nice big meal, why don't they want to snuggle and snooze??

RhubarbCrumble12345 · 15/04/2022 18:21

I feel totally confined and antsy if I don't get out for at least one walk a day! Don't know how anyone can not want to walk but I grew up with lots of walking. Love it! I am very lazy in the house so not an energizer bunny by any means.

MontySass · 15/04/2022 18:26

A walk without a dog is a waste of energy

Augustmummy · 15/04/2022 18:36

One day in the future when you’re sat alone, gazing out of the window, no longer able to wipe your own ass, let alone go out for a walk in the sunshine, you’ll maybe remember this question you once asked many years ago. Time flies. People die. Games change. Cherish everything whilst it’s still there. You never know when it can be taken from you xx

thenewduchessoflapland · 15/04/2022 18:38

I go to the gym and swim/take classes when I want to exercise.I like to curl up and read otherwise;on a nice day I read in the garden.I walk the dogs.
