To not understand the need for "walks"

walkingDisaster22 · 14/04/2022 18:06

Anyone else similar to me and not understand the need for walks or enjoyment in walking.
My in laws are obsessed with walking and think i'm odd (or maybe a sloth!) for not wanting to go out daily walking.
Where is the enjoyment in mud and rain? I would rather chill with a good book. Please tell me I'm not on my own?

I walk a lot and used to enjoy walking even more before I came across people who are one of these obsessed with a daily BRISK walk and then talking about this hobby all the time and asking "Do you walk?".

So I dislike that it's now turning into a tick a box activity (daily brisk walk).

I am a reasonably active person. I don't need to quantify my walking in order for it to count

PortalooSunset · 15/04/2022 18:40

The world would be a dull place if we all only liked the same stuff.

LaDamaDeElche · 15/04/2022 18:43

It's a good, low impact, free form of exercise and also for families, a good way to get the kids out and about in the fresh air. If you exercise in other ways or have the money to go to the gym etc, then great 🤷🏻‍♀️ I like hiking, but I guess that's not the kind of walking you mean. I find aimlessly walking around the streets/park a bit dull too. I live in Spain and it's part of life her. People love a walk around their local area or travel to somewhere to have lunch and a stroll. I'd personally rather have lunch followed by some cocktails, but each to their own 😁

Your username is quite ironic, then, @Thesefeetaremadeforwalking! grin

We are indeed all different. I would loathe a treadmill. Much more interesting getting out of the house.*

I love walking not for exercise but just to get outside and appreciate nature, look at the trees look at buildings, see which flowers are popping up and which birds I can see, feel the sun on my face (or the wind or the rain) and to come home knackered and pleased with myself. Just go out and appreciate the beauty of the world around you 😍 always puts me in a better mood even in the winter

Iwouldgoouttonight73 · 15/04/2022 19:05

Because I don’t drive I walk to places, so don’t see the fun in going for a walk just for the craic.

WonderfulYou · 15/04/2022 19:07

I bloody love a good walk.
I always come home feeling better.

I think it’s the exercise as well as the fresh air, vitamin D and nature that makes you feel so good.

DrSbaitso · 15/04/2022 19:11

My in-laws like to go a long walk AFTER a nice big meal

That's fine, if you've got a wheelbarrow for your stomach.

Ifeelsuchafool · 15/04/2022 19:12

Have to admit I'm in the walking contingent. Nothing like it for blowing away the cobwebs and it has been proven to sharpen the mind and heighten the senses. I also love a roaring fire and squishy sofa and a good book. They're not mutually exclusive. Your in-laws should leave you alone though. You're old enough to make up your own mind.

Honeywaffles1 · 15/04/2022 19:13

I used to love walking but fell out of love with it now sadly. I’m so unfit and sad thing is I have a little dog now too 😂😂

I do think it’s really great exercise and also used to get a chance to listen to podcasts and have some alone time too

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/04/2022 19:17

I enjoy going for a walk along my local canal on a nice day, usually with a pub stop off involved. I wouldn't go if it was raining or cold though, it's a spring/summer activity!

BrightOrangeOrange · 15/04/2022 19:18

I'm just getting into it properly and I'm loving it. I'm not fussed about the gym or classes. I do like swimming but I'm finding being in the fresh air really great and loving the countryside.

BrightOrangeOrange · 15/04/2022 19:21

@eddiemairswife

A pointless activity.
It's not pointless if you enjoy it and reap the benefits.

You mean you don't care for it.

Bmh54 · 15/04/2022 19:21

I seldom had time to walk much when working full-time & 3 children to get from a to b...as it takes longer than going by car. But since retiring I started walking, have met lots of people whom I consider friends now, and if I was to be house bound because of Ill health it would drive me nuts! I love my days out walking, chatting, the lunches out, the holiday opportunities walking in different places. Plus . You get home feeling tired but exhilarated , look better, refreshed and the feel good hormones kick in. It also helps keep your weight down, which makes me feel better.
It's also cheap!
What else would I do with my days apart from clean and garden and decorate ? Though must admit I do those but don't enjoy them much.
I couldnt read all day, my kneck would ache.😂
If it's not for you that's ok, I expect your busy doing other stuff.
I don't understand golf . That strikes me as boring and they don't seem to break out in a sweat.
Good job we are all not the same, life would be boring and we would all choose the same friends.

Eastereggsarecoming · 15/04/2022 19:22

I absolutely love walking, always have.

It's actually a brilliant form of exercise, you can have a stroll or make it more challenging, It clears the mind. It's great if you've got someone to walk with and chat to. It helps if you have got somewhere nice and scenic to walk, I don't particularly love walking by main roads.

Even better on a nice evening to walk somewhere lovely for a meal or a drink.

JellyBunny · 15/04/2022 19:51

For a lot of people it can be a pleasant and attainable way to be active.

Do you do any other exercise if not walking?

Jeannie88 · 15/04/2022 20:05

Always good to get out and about in fresh air! You can really low then go out (with doggie), come back and feel refreshed and also more positive as you've chatted to people. Just my experience, better than being sat at home, which you can come back to? X

Fluff3 · 15/04/2022 20:22

I love walking, espically costal paths and country walks. I love seeing nature and the lovely scenery, things you cant see whilst sitting in a car. I also love reading.

Twowilldo50 · 15/04/2022 20:29

It’s really good for your immune system to get outside, and of course for your children.

MilkGoatee · 15/04/2022 20:38

Since the summer of 2020 I walk a lot, of the pointless kind. We walk everywhere in town anyway, to dinner/lunch, shop and so on anyway, but I've added the pointless kind.

But not so pointless after all, considering:
I lost nearly 2 stone since I started, most of it from the Christmas to June of last year.
I walk 45 minutes before starting work (wfh) at 7, so I'm really fresh and clear-headed. Another walk later in the day, goal 12k steps a day.
The more I walk, the more I enjoy it. I've always liked working more than cycling, though.

But now I've got osteo-arthritis, so walking is not so good if it's more than 45 - 60 minutes at a time. Bought a bicycle again, and now enjoying that, but won't be doing that in the dead of winter, while I don't mind doing it at 5.30 in the morning in the winter, with a headtorch on.

Gilly12345 · 15/04/2022 20:44

I love walking but definitely don’t when it’s raining.

Glitterblue · 15/04/2022 21:01

My mum is obsessed with walks. Apparently when I was growing up, I used to say it was completely pointless just putting one foot past the other - unless you were going somewhere.

queensonia · 15/04/2022 21:04

Really depends where you live. If you can walk on the coast or through fields and pretty countryside etc then walking is great. Around a grotty suburban street, then not so much

Mandyjack · 15/04/2022 21:55

I go for walks to walk my dog but if I didnt have 1 I wouldn't be unless I had a reason to like walking to town etc. We are all different so just cos they enjoy it doesn't mean you have to

theonlygirl · 15/04/2022 22:15

I enjoy many kinds of exercise but I ABSOLUTELY LOATHE walking.
