Anyone else develop a sudden intolerance to a food they've eaten for years?

Particular ready meal i've eaten week in-week out for about 2 years, the last 3 times has made me sick.. started with mild indigestion that has gone on to full on being sick/sweats/shakes last time.

I hadn't made the connection before, in case anyone asks, but while miserably sitting on the floor of my bathroom last night, i made the connection.

There's been no info about a recipe change on the box, but it seems i can no longer eat it.. i'm upset and annoyed as it was quick/easy and one meal EVERYONE else ate (miracle in itself) and no-one else in the house is having problems with it, just me.

I heard some suggestions that Covid can bring about new food intolerances, but they can also just develop. I know someone who's just become lactose intolerant at around age 60.

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 14/04/2022 11:27

I became lactose intolerant in my early 20s. So did my mum and my cousin.

happysunr1se · 14/04/2022 11:38

Yes this has happened to me.

I've eaten apples all my life then last autumn I had an allergic reaction.

I have other allergies so I know quite early when I'm reacting; tingly mouth and throat followed by swelling followed by coughing and sneezing.
It never gets any further than this as I would have already taken medication by this point.

Blanketsarethebest · 14/04/2022 11:40

Yes, a particular ingredient. Was ill a few times after eating meals with it in, assumed it was something else to start with, and then narrowed it down. Was a bit gutted to be honest, and I'm sure people think it's me being fussy (as it's an ingredient I love!), but I can guarantee that a short while after eating it I will be violently ill for the next few hours.

FromOurHatsToOurFeet · 14/04/2022 11:43

Cheese - but only certain sorts when cooked in certain ways. Totally not predictable but that's the only thing I've eaten every time I've woken up with stomach pains worse than labour and then over the next few hours frantically evacuated my entire digestive system.

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 14/04/2022 11:46

At the grand old age of early forties my body has decided it doesn't like pineapple. I had it the other week and my lips, tongue went all numb, tingling and slightly swollen.

annabell22 · 14/04/2022 11:46

Eggs- an omelette would mean spending the next 24 hours in the bathroom, but I could manage something like a pastry with a smear of egg glaze. There's a middle ground where mouth ulcers emerge and just a couple of visits to the toilet. This developed in my late 40s.

GeneLovesJezebel · 14/04/2022 11:47

That’s how many allergies happen. It’s not bothered you for years, then suddenly you’re allergic to it.

UnconditionalSurrender · 14/04/2022 11:54

Quorn here. Used to love it now it doesn't love me. Mid 40s when it started out of nowhere.

Artichokeleaves · 14/04/2022 11:57

Yup. Dairy about five years ago. I did an exclusion diet a few months back due to symptoms and discovered that now any grain and soya is also out. Joy. (Although apparently the soya one is not uncommon in people with dairy intolerance.)

StationaryMagpie · 14/04/2022 11:59

oh no, im 40.. bloody perimenopause i guess?

Yes can definitely happen, my dad is allergic now to certain kinds of seasonings and after never having had issues before, developed migraines from red wine and dark chocolate in his 50's

Mrsjayy · 14/04/2022 12:03

About 5 years ago I developed a dry fruit allergy especially raisins.

CreaturefromtheDeep · 14/04/2022 13:32

Pescatarian with fish/seafood forming the main part of my diet. Always had big bags of prawns in the freezer to be chucked into stir-fries, curries etc.

Went out to dinner, had a pasta and langoustine dish, in a restaurant we'd been to several times before and a dish I've had, in that place, several times before. Went into anaphylactic shock. Never experienced it before in my life. As the dish also included pesto, I was told I was experiencing a nut allergy so I started being careful with ingredients until I could get an allergy clinic appointment and epi-pen. Didn't occur to me nor anyone else to consider the other ingredients in that dish. Two weeks later at another restaurant I ordered a prawn cocktail. Another anaphylactic reaction, another blue-lit trip to hospital and the resulting realisation that I had literally developed an overnight serious allergy to one of my most commonly eaten foods.

I was 38 and just started peri symptoms - I'm convinced this is related.

HRTQueen · 14/04/2022 13:46

Yes horseradish

I have a few times been in agony after eating it. I thought I might have a stomach ulcer but i can still eat chilli and mustard.

I used to use it quite often mixed in mash, with creme fresh mixed with spinach, of course with roast beef (and roast chicken)

BearSoFair · 14/04/2022 14:16

My Dad used to drink a pint of milk most days until his 50s, literally from one day to the next it started to give him awful cramps and upset stomach, cut it right out and he's absolutely fine ever since! Not sure if he should have spoken to his GP about it but he assumed it was a sudden intolerance as it completely cleared up once he cut dairy out.

Animum2 · 15/04/2022 11:45

Once I hit 40 cheese started to give me very bad upset tummy, I've worked it out that mild cheddar is fine but spreads and anything above that will basically kill my belly

Not that it stops me from continuing to eat these things 🤷‍♀️

BobbyRhude · 15/04/2022 11:52

Yes,a few things, usually after I've had a baby but not always,

Codine,
Some alcohol, all draft beer (bottled is fine)
Shellfish
All game birds
Butter beans

All these things now make me violently ill and if I persist it goes to swelling of the throat/airways level.

I beamed afraid to eat for a while. Blush

TorySteller · 15/04/2022 12:28

Yep, I’m very intolerant to pastry after having no problems with it for years. It now gives me horrendous reflux and has made me sick on a couple of occasions, even after a small amount.

My grandma developed coeliac disease in her 70s.

Lampzade · 15/04/2022 12:32

Mackerel
I had eaten it for years. Then last year I ate some mackerel and had what seemed to be an allergic reaction. Thought that it was just a coincidence and ate it a few weeks later and had another allergic reaction

HirplesWithHaggis · 15/04/2022 12:54

Yes, egg white (depending how it's cooked, fortunately I'm ok with cake! Grin), melon for a while, strawberries, seafood including oily fish (but fine with tinned tuna), all things I've previously eaten with relish. But the effects are "just" stomach cramps and a rush to the loo, I'm not anaphylactic. This happened after having DC, and I read that the immune system changes when you're pregnant so you don't reject the foetus, and food intolerances are a side-effect. My poor MiL can't eat garlic or fowl, the mother of my first grandchild developed a problem with bacon!

RabitWhole · 15/04/2022 13:04

Yes, I have intolerance to egg yolk, smoked salmon and bananas. What's interesting though is that over the years I've yo-yoed between being able to eat them and not. For years I couldn't eat egg yolk but slowly started to re-introduce it and was able to eat it fine again for a few years, but last year had scrambled eggs and was in agony. Some times I can eat bananas for months on end and then will eat one one day and get a tingly mouth and itchy throat

RabitWhole · 15/04/2022 13:05

Also I've had various pets all my life since childhood with no issues and two years ago developed an allergy to pet dander (skin flakes). Not great when we have a dog and three cats!

liquidrevolution · 15/04/2022 13:06

After pregnancy i can no longer eat monster munch or drink alcohol. Hmm

dudsville · 15/04/2022 13:08

I used to eat lots of garlic and onions. Then once at a friends for a meal they served up some garlic starter. It was delicious and I ate the whole thing. I was then ill for days. Ever since then it's like I can't digest even small amounts.
