Anyone else develop a sudden intolerance to a food they've eaten for years?

Particular ready meal i've eaten week in-week out for about 2 years, the last 3 times has made me sick.. started with mild indigestion that has gone on to full on being sick/sweats/shakes last time.

I hadn't made the connection before, in case anyone asks, but while miserably sitting on the floor of my bathroom last night, i made the connection.

There's been no info about a recipe change on the box, but it seems i can no longer eat it.. i'm upset and annoyed as it was quick/easy and one meal EVERYONE else ate (miracle in itself) and no-one else in the house is having problems with it, just me.

As if being perimenopausal wasn't enough I suddenly developed migraines and nausea after drinking even a mouthful of red wine.

TrashyPanda · 15/04/2022 13:17

Red wine now goes straight to my sinuses

Pegasussnail · 15/04/2022 13:17

In the last week I have put IBS symptoms (quite severe) down to drinking tea with milk or after cereal with milk. Long story short. Bought lactose free milk three days ago. No cramping pain or other nasty symptoms.

Thornrose · 15/04/2022 13:20

I developed an intolerance to prawns a few years ago in my forties.

I'm gutted as I ate them a couple of times a week and love them.

My only symptom is terrible stomach cramps, trapped wind type pain that lasts for hours.

It took a while to make the link.

Thornrose · 15/04/2022 13:22

@TrashyPanda agh, my sinuses get really bad for weeks at a time. Can't breath at night and awful dry mouth.

I drink quite a lot of red wine...Shock

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/04/2022 13:23

Yeah, at 35 I developed a severe allergy to molluscs. I miss the tasty wee bastards.Easter Sad

My understanding of what can happen is that whilst your body is fending off a virus, your body can mistake some food you've been eating as part of the illness and so it will have an immune reaction next time you eat that food.

Yep, gluten and dairy so far. It was lactose for a while but can't tolerate any dairy now.
I think mine is down to endometriosis causing inflammation.

Caramac555 · 15/04/2022 14:04

Yes, after 40 can no longer eat prawns without nausea afterwards.

tiredanddangerous · 15/04/2022 14:24

Yes I hit 40 and my body started falling apart! Gluten and dairy both give me stomach cramps and have me glued to the toilet for hours.

gothsnotmoths · 15/04/2022 14:26

It can and does happen. I was allergic to strawberries and plums for a while but then it stopped. I have gluten intolerance but it didn’t develop until I was in my teens. The body is strange.

Forshorttheycallmecomp · 15/04/2022 14:29

Pineapple for me in my late 30s. Hugely itchy face and lips.

User7493268965 · 15/04/2022 14:35

I have a gluten intolerance which give me migraines but I can tolerate small amounts so don’t have to rigidly check labels but can’t eat anything like cakes bread and pastries so not nowhere near as bad as having coeliac disease

42isthemeaning · 15/04/2022 17:02

Quorn
Was okay with it for years. Can't touch it now without getting an awful stomach upset.

Rockbird · 15/04/2022 17:16

Sounds daft but fish and chips. I love it, it's one of my favourite things. But for the last couple of years without fail I vomit during the night after eating it. Doesn't matter where it comes from or how much of it I have, it's like my stomach can't tolerate the grease.

Good Friday today, I'm a good Catholic so it's fish and chips night but for the first time ever we're not getting it. I'm gutted but have had to accept I just can't have it anymore.

Floralnomad · 15/04/2022 17:19

In my 40s I became allergic to pomegranate , very disappointing as I love them .

I developed this a few years back too and it was definitely the batter on the fish. I think I just can't tolerate the grease. I know a couple of others who have the same issue.
Candleabra · 15/04/2022 17:21

Eggs. Particularly scrambled. They make me sick now, never used to. Just happened suddenly.

TracyMosby · 15/04/2022 17:22

I stopped being able to eat salmon when i was 28. It was a somewhat regular meal, not weekly though. Used to eat cold slices with cream cheese on toast, and salmon steaks. Then hit 28 and every single time, no matter how small the amount, it would leave my body in the most undignified way. Took me a number of meals to work out the connection as I assumed the first two times was down to food poisoning.

Rockbird · 15/04/2022 17:32

42isthemeaning that's really interesting, I'd never heard of anyone with this before. Glad it's not just me losing the plot!

Lucia23 · 15/04/2022 17:39

@OnceAgainWithFeeling

I became lactose intolerant in my early 20s. So did my mum and my cousin.
Same here. Apparently it actually is quite unnatural for adults to drink milk.

I also had apple, banana, melon and other fruit allergies. Last year I realised I could now eat bananas again with no adverse effects. Then I tried a melon and well Confused still can't eat them.

My hayfever symptoms are also pretty much non existent now since I turned 30

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 15/04/2022 17:43

Not an intolerance as such, but I can’t eat bread anymore. It gets stuck in my throat and makes me choke (quite scarily at times). Turns out the severe acid reflux I had in pregnancy scarred my food pipe and now bread gets stuck on the way down.

TheBigDilemma · 15/04/2022 17:46

I became allergic to chocolate in my 30s (bad migraines if consumed even in very small amounts). I stopped eating chocolate for a couple of years and now I am fine.

Same goes for dairy but other allergies are here to stay.

Sleepeatrepeat · 15/04/2022 17:48

In my teens I developed a dairy allergy having eaten it loads up to then.

Am in my 40's now and I appear to have developed an issue to white bread (burger buns/hot dog rolls in particular) and if I eat it I end up sweating, shaking, horrific stomach cramps; bloating and the worst diarrhoea ever.

Goawayangryman · 15/04/2022 18:02

Yes. Onions and some other alliums, particularly onion powder. Annoying as onions are in most of my everyday foods but they cause nausea, epic farting, diarrhea, and lately, nightmares.
