Anyone else develop a sudden intolerance to a food they've eaten for years?

Particular ready meal i've eaten week in-week out for about 2 years, the last 3 times has made me sick.. started with mild indigestion that has gone on to full on being sick/sweats/shakes last time.

I hadn't made the connection before, in case anyone asks, but while miserably sitting on the floor of my bathroom last night, i made the connection.

There's been no info about a recipe change on the box, but it seems i can no longer eat it.. i'm upset and annoyed as it was quick/easy and one meal EVERYONE else ate (miracle in itself) and no-one else in the house is having problems with it, just me.

@CreaturefromtheDeep

Pescatarian with fish/seafood forming the main part of my diet. Always had big bags of prawns in the freezer to be chucked into stir-fries, curries etc.

Went out to dinner, had a pasta and langoustine dish, in a restaurant we'd been to several times before and a dish I've had, in that place, several times before. Went into anaphylactic shock. Never experienced it before in my life. As the dish also included pesto, I was told I was experiencing a nut allergy so I started being careful with ingredients until I could get an allergy clinic appointment and epi-pen. Didn't occur to me nor anyone else to consider the other ingredients in that dish. Two weeks later at another restaurant I ordered a prawn cocktail. Another anaphylactic reaction, another blue-lit trip to hospital and the resulting realisation that I had literally developed an overnight serious allergy to one of my most commonly eaten foods.

I was 38 and just started peri symptoms - I'm convinced this is related.

I think there's something in this. I developed an allergy to penicillin and adult onset asthma in my 40s. I'm now waiting for the results of further allergy testing as I'm reacting to some nuts. The consultant initially suggested my symptoms related to nuts were due to stress. My skin test reactions suggests otherwise

Yes. Apples, I've eaten them all my life but now I get painful stomach cramps if I eat them.

EdwinsActsOfKindness · 15/04/2022 18:26

@happysunr1se

Yes this has happened to me.

I've eaten apples all my life then last autumn I had an allergic reaction.

I have other allergies so I know quite early when I'm reacting; tingly mouth and throat followed by swelling followed by coughing and sneezing.
It never gets any further than this as I would have already taken medication by this point.

Is that uncooked apples and are you ok with cooked apples? I developed this (also for carrots, plums and a number of other things) after my second pregnancy years ago. Last year I discovered I had oral allergy symptom which is like a crossover allergy (I have a very strong allergy to birch pollen).

Strawberries circa 1988 aged 28. Red blotches and hives. All it takes is a quarter of a strawberry on a chocolate gateaux or mousse. Am fine with things like strawberry ice cream or jelly providing it's processed.

GumbalinaToothington · 15/04/2022 18:32

Yes beer and lager.

It used to be my beverage of choice. Since having DC2 I suddenly can't drink it due to horrendous bloating and pain the next couple of days.

It's been 8 years but still gutted.

portionplate · 15/04/2022 18:34

I think I may have developed a gluten or wheat intolerance. When I eat it I get a bad churning stomach that makes grumbling sounds & the runs (sorry).

presentandsometimescorrect · 15/04/2022 18:39

2 years ago I went into anaphylactic shock eating a kiwi, I was 34. I absolutely love kiwi too. But as a child I came out in a rash from a strawberry but have been ok as an adult.

portionplate · 15/04/2022 18:39

I know someone who was in a very bad crash & miraculously walked away with a few scratches. However they developed all sorts of allergies after, the body is weird.

BanditOne · 15/04/2022 18:39

I'm 43 and for the last year or two I seem to have developed a reaction to peaches , I think it's the skin.
Within a few minutes of eating one I was getting an itchy roof of mouth and my throat felt like it was swelling up 😬

portionplate · 15/04/2022 18:41

With the fruit is it the actual fruit or how they are grown eg soil, pesticides, etc.

DH can't eat apples or pears, mouth tingly & swollen lips thing but a few times abroad where the fruit is super organic it's been fine.

Veuvelily · 15/04/2022 18:48

For those with fruit allergies- look up oral allergy syndrome. There’s groups of fruits you might be allergic to.
I developed this in pregnancy

portionplate · 15/04/2022 18:51

@Veuvelily I bet my DH has that he also has hay fever

Secrettoday · 15/04/2022 18:51

Yes for me Banana and shellfish! 2 things I love!

addler · 15/04/2022 18:57

I've got oral allergy syndrome, so does my twin and my mum.

It started with apples and now it's cherries, peaches, apricots, plums, basically any stone fruit. But fine if cooked.

BlueThursday · 15/04/2022 19:17

Yes it’s oral allergy syndrome I have. The hit list is apples, pears, kiwi, pineapple and cherries.

They tell me it’s likely tomatoes will be next

BlueThursday · 15/04/2022 19:18

I still can’t do cooked fruit though

niceupthedanceagain · 15/04/2022 19:53

Dairy
Soy sauce in anything
Also can't tolerate anything fried
I no longer eat dinner as can't digest it

Thanks peri menopause

Mrsjayy · 15/04/2022 20:05

Yes I have oral allergy syndrome with the dried fruit 😩

TheVolturi · 15/04/2022 20:07

Yes, dairy, and eggs. Both give me awful upset stomach.

rewardacrosstrack · 15/04/2022 20:38

I developed an allergy to quorn in my early 20s and stopped being able to eat avocado at 30. Both things I used to love but now cause terrible bloating and cramps for hours unfortunately. I do also have a latex allergy and have read the avocado issues could be related to that

Xpologog · 15/04/2022 21:34

Had sudden reaction to pineapple, put me in hospital.

mumofEandE · 15/04/2022 21:40

Yes - orange juice (from concentrate) and pineapple juice (even if fresh) now gives me thrush Hmm

Evilpixie41 · 15/04/2022 21:48

Yes. It started off with milk (bloating, indigestion) which did nt bother me as I don't particularly like it to drink and have coffee/tea black anyway. Then it was coffee (which I love), and now includes pizza, bread on occasion, cereals, spicy food and fried greasy food. Bread and cereal makes me bloated, gassy and gives me terrible tummy ache, everything else on the list the runs ((sore)). I've been hospitalised with gastritis 4 times.now, any of the above can set it off.
