How can we integrate weed smokers into society?

BookkeeperBobby · 14/04/2022 01:16

Just got back in and as is usual three/four nights a week my hallway and son's bedroom stinks of weed from our neighbour in the flat next door. This is an ongoing issue so I'll send an email to the housing association, they'll send a letter, it'll lay off for a couple of weeks then begin again. This is what's been happening for years now.

But, there must be some other way to tackle it. Obviously this guy isn't going to stop smoking. Christ knows he does fuck all else. And it's all but legal so no real comeback for him.

Or for many other tokers across the country: cannabis is everywhere and probably will be legal v soon. But the use does impact neighbours.

So I think we need to come up with ways of regulating use eg requiring people to use personal/room filters when they toke with fines similar to smoking fines if they don't do this. Obviously we'd need to make it legal but for anyone living near a toke head this would be an improvement imo.

What do you all think?

@BlackeyedSusan

And given a child was strip searched for smelling of weed not spreading the smell to others has taken on new importance.

We had weed stink coming up into the kitchen from the flats below and through the front door from the stairwell when some twonk moved in and smoked.

First time took kids to GP to ask about harm to the children. (Get it on record) second time informed school about the new tenant smoking weed and that it had been reported.

What a waste of GP time Confused
Akire · 14/04/2022 17:20

Of course it’s not a waste of time the school can make safeguarding concerns if child comes in constantly smelling of weed, any sensible parent would want their version on record first. Even then it can be on their notes

scryingeyes · 14/04/2022 17:21

Absolutely hate the smell. Achafi

Theunamedcat · 14/04/2022 17:23

Yup the stench is appalling as a young adult it smelt kinda sweet not offensive the stale smell was still a bit rank but livable in recent years the intense burning tomcat piss smell has really taken off its so rank and so wrong even the neighbours fence panels stink how much do you have to smoke inside the shed beyond the fence panels for the actual fence to stink!

It's nasty

RockStarMartini · 14/04/2022 17:27

@Soontobe60 I’ve no idea but I’m not making it up! How else would I know what they’re doing if I didn’t smell it?

Positivelypatient · 14/04/2022 17:31

I have this problem in my porch which is joined to my next door neighbour. It sinks so much, I try to leave windows open all day and am going to seal around the walls where the two join. It must absolutely reek in there, I feel sorry for the primary age kid it must be so noticeable when he goes to school.

SaxendaSummer · 14/04/2022 17:34

No ... how can we make it legal when it impairs judgement?

Using machinery
Driving

While using weed?

SaxendaSummer · 14/04/2022 17:35

@Seafog

I live in Canada, cannabis is legal here and has been for a while, we seem to manage alright. There are designated smoking areas outside of workplaces, areas that are smoke free, like beaches or school yards. Some buildings are totally smoke free, some don't care.

Sorry but I would not want my bus driver/hairdresser/nursery worker on weed!

How does that work for you all?

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 14/04/2022 17:36

I have every sympathy for you OP. My nextdoor neighbours (adjoining flat and balcony) are heavy skunk smokers (and he is also a dealer). I have had times when I've entered my kitchen (adjoins theirs) - every window in my flat is shut but the smell is overpowering in my kitchen - I've had to leave it immediately until the smell subsides as it is choking. It must come through the wall/along underneath the floorboards or something. The couple next door to me will never be integrated into society - they lead a rather isolated existence (friends hardly ever seem to visit them) and they have become increasingly angry and paranoid (I've never complained to them about it because they aren't pleasant or reasonable). It is definitely skunk - smells nothing like the weed that people smoked in my teenage years.

fallfallfall · 14/04/2022 18:20

@SaxendaSummer, impaired driving laws include impaired with drugs not just alcohol. Workplace health and safety regulations prevent people from working impaired, some workplaces do routine drug screening.

Sunnytwobridges · 14/04/2022 20:45

Ugh have no prob with people that partake in it but HATE the smell. I hate smelling it when I'm driving, I hate smelling it when I walk by someone in a restaurant and can smell it coming off of them. I just hate it lol And that includes cigarette smoke too.

mrziggycoco · 14/04/2022 21:46

This isn't about weed. The smell shouldn't be coming into your house. I wouldn't want someone else's weed smell in my home, nor smoke, nor oil, nor farts. It's totally inconsiderate.

How does the smell penetrate through the walls?

The answer doesn't exist, the real question is how to get such people to have self respect, respect for their home and community and neighbours.

Alcohol impairs judgement and is legal so if you're looking for an idea of how that would work simply look there.
mrziggycoco · 14/04/2022 21:56

@BobLep0nge

Well obviously there is secondary harm same as from cigarette smoke and lots of apartment blocks are non smoking for that reason

It's just the smell, not actual smoke though, a smell won't harm you (and I say that as someone that lived with the smell of a decomposing body for a couple of months, it didn't harm me but was unpleasant).

Wait, what?
Sodie · 14/04/2022 21:59

I find that a dry herb vape gives off little smell. It uses no tobacco just a small amount of grass.

Seemssounfair · 14/04/2022 22:10

Integrate? No, put in place more powers so there are consequences for this anti social behaviour. Whether that is fines or warnings for eviction. People shouldnt have to put up with the smell and potential health impact of obvious illegal drug usage.

MissMaple82 · 14/04/2022 22:27

I used to live next door to a stoner and the smell was horrific. Not everyone appreciates its stink, especially not if you're a non smoker. I found it really distressing, I had a new baby at the time too but even if I didn't I'd still feel its wrong. Why should we be forced to breathe that stink in sat in the comfort if our own homes. It's vile. I feel for you I really do.

BigFatLiar · 14/04/2022 23:12

I think the difference is for example:
a night out with friends and you're driving, they drink you don't, stopped by the police you're sober, all ok
a night out with friends and you're driving, they smoke weed you don't, stopped by the police you're could well be DUID, arrested, fined, lose licence.

As alcohol use has a far greater impact on society as a whole than any other drug, maybe start with banning that instead?

There’s many things that people like / don’t like. I don’t smoke either tobacco or weed, but I wouldn’t say that those who do have no self respect. What an odd thing to say!
