How can we integrate weed smokers into society?

BookkeeperBobby · 14/04/2022 01:16

Just got back in and as is usual three/four nights a week my hallway and son's bedroom stinks of weed from our neighbour in the flat next door. This is an ongoing issue so I'll send an email to the housing association, they'll send a letter, it'll lay off for a couple of weeks then begin again. This is what's been happening for years now.

But, there must be some other way to tackle it. Obviously this guy isn't going to stop smoking. Christ knows he does fuck all else. And it's all but legal so no real comeback for him.

Or for many other tokers across the country: cannabis is everywhere and probably will be legal v soon. But the use does impact neighbours.

So I think we need to come up with ways of regulating use eg requiring people to use personal/room filters when they toke with fines similar to smoking fines if they don't do this. Obviously we'd need to make it legal but for anyone living near a toke head this would be an improvement imo.

What do you all think?

It is an intrusion though, isn’t it? I don’t like smell - it ‘a sickly to me.

Interesting. I know that there's been a lot more research into the harms of smoking in that time and now medical professionals are talking about third hand smoke. Presumably that applies to burning weed also.
Resin is known to be even more carcinogenic than cigarette smoke, but it doesn't contain all the added nasties that go into processed tobacco that contribute to all sorts of devastating physical illnesses.

Much depends on which form of cannabinoid is being consumed, and whether or not it is being smoked with tobacco.

@BookkeeperBobby

If you think living with a decomposing body is normal then we have few common points of reference my friend.
Yup, but IME the weed-deniers will pretend that it's just a fresh natural outdoorsy scent, like jasmine or pine or roses. It's revolting and should be stigmatised and regulated like cigarette smoke is.
TOADfan · 14/04/2022 04:26

My dad is a heavy smoker and I care him and everytime I leave his house, I stink to high heavens.
My clothes stink, my car stinks etc and it makes me feel sick and I hate people thinking I probably smoke it myself as it clings to me. I know need to keep febreeze on me at all times urgh.
When he smoked hash which is impossible to come by now it never smelt as bad.

fallfallfall · 14/04/2022 05:43

ways to tackle it might need to include building regulations for better ventilation.
apartment regulations possibly fire regs to not permit smoking in communal buildings.
laws banning smoking within x distance of a door or window.
as well as not allowing smoking within x distance of a school or playground.
:) all those rules in place where i live.

Saltyquiche · 14/04/2022 06:05

The public are mostly protected due to legislation around smoking but I can understand and appreciate that this doesn’t work when it’s neighbours in their own homes.

Can you suggest directly to him that he bakes the weed in brownies rather then smokes. Explain how strongly it smells in your child’s room.

Hohoholymoley · 14/04/2022 06:17

Ask them to buy a smoke buddy, or buy one for them yourself.

If its not the smoke that one can smell, then what is it?

Coffeeonmytoffee · 14/04/2022 06:33

Then smell is so powerful. When I get to work at 7am the whole road stinks of it. I know so many people who are in this position. My sister sold her flat because the people who moved in downstairs just did this all day. It's horrible and you're right it needs to be thought about.

Soontobe60 · 14/04/2022 06:36

@BlackeyedSusan

I managed to reduce the smell of fags from next door coming through the wall with utilities by sealing around the pipes with decorators caulk. Need to do the bathroom but that is trickier with a hot water tank in the way.
Who on earth has pipes coming through the walls from a next door neighbour? This is something I have NEVER seen in the many houses I’ve lived in!
Theworldisfullofgs · 14/04/2022 06:37

Legalise it, then tax it.

Make it like cigarettes.

Where do you live where these unmanageable rules exist?
Soontobe60 · 14/04/2022 06:43

@BookkeeperBobby

Also ofc people in eg terraced houses with neighbours smoking weed next to them will have weed smoke in their house if the neighbour doesn't use a filter.
My terraced house neighbour smokes weed a lot! In summer he does it in the garden, so we smell it if we’re outside. In winter he does it in the house. We never smell it! There’s absolutely no way smoke from next door can get into my house through solid walls.
Soontobe60 · 14/04/2022 06:54

There’s very little research into the effects of cannabis smoke on human health, but some of the research shows that the effects in terms of causing cancers, like that of tobacco smoke, are in fact negligible. In other words, smoke from cannabis is not harmful in the same way as smoke from tobacco is.

RockStarMartini · 14/04/2022 07:10

The smell can 100% get in through the walls, I don’t know how but I live in a terraced house next to a pair of weed smokers and when they’re smoking in their house it’s noticeable all through mine. As for air fresheners - no chance! Febreze, candles and an air purifier help but nothing gets rid of the disgusting smell completely.

Thank you DropYourSword. Not sure why OP responded as bizarrely as she did.

BigFatLiar · 14/04/2022 07:35

And it's all but legal so no real comeback for him

Be careful of this especially if you drive. By being exposed you may technically be driving under the influence of drugs. If stopped by the police and they smell it they could do a drug swipe. Not sure how sensitive they are, maybe there's a police officer can say.

There was a program where they tested people after eating poppy seeds and there was enough residue on some of the samples for a positive opiate test on a couple of people.

So be careful, as it may be 'all but legal' it isn't and if stopped by the police or your employer does drug testing there may be a small risk.

@Soontobe60, BC Canada.
No smoking within 250m of doorways, of a childrens park or inside apartment complexes. Smoking of any kind.

MrsDThomas · 14/04/2022 10:06

I dont want it integrated into society.

How many think its ok to drive after it?

Stinks and that absolutely hate the smell. Zero tolerance from me

Totally unenforced though 😀 I mean, it may be different where you are, but clearly ignored entirely in Vancouver (where I was for the last week), also Kamloops (2 weeks ago) and Northern BC (where I live.) So, yes, great regulations in theory.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 14/04/2022 17:03

I was out dogwalking the other day and a works van passed me stinking of it. Someone inside was obviously smoking it, because it smelled fresh.

Saying that, a lorry in front of me on the motorway yesterday threw out an empty bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale 😬

Don't do substances at work or whilst driving 🙄

How? How does the smoke they’ve exhaled permeate through a solid surface?

What point are you trying to make?
Try walking round Vancouver - you can’t avoid weed smokers!

Akire · 14/04/2022 17:17

The people who smoke it don’t care but I’d be up for buying a filter system that could make my home stink less of weed and cigs. Live in block of flats where it get v warm but if any neighbours are smoking and wind in right direction you get a flat full. You then have close your window stop it getting worse and it’s trapped in. Repeat this constantly though the day it’s nasty. Surety tweaking it to smell less would be a win win

fallfallfall · 14/04/2022 17:17

@Soontobe60, just some of the ways to integrate smokers into society.
The pandemic has changed the look of Canadian cities for sure though, I expect less blatant smoking if work in those centers picks up.
