Calling anyone with drugs knowledge please

So someone in our extended family was taken to hospital and put on a fluid drip after taking a drug. The hospital did tests and said it was methamphetamine (crystal meth). Person in question says they must have had drink spiked as they have no idea how this got into their system! Family believe this story, I dont believe it though. I've never heard of crystal meth being used to spike drinks.

Any thoughts on the plausibility of this alleged spiking?

Wowzer sorry you're going through this op. Are you in the UK? As i haven't heard of that happening either and i haven't heard of it being a popular street drug in UK tbh. X

Pinzotti · 10/04/2022 22:12

You can't ingest it this way. Smoking it is usual.

AwkwardPaws27 · 10/04/2022 22:16

Well it can be taken by swallowing it, so it is a possibility. I'm not sure if that is what you are asking though?

Serena1977 · 10/04/2022 22:20

@AwkwardPaws27
Just wondering whether it's the drug of choice if someone wanted to spike their drink or whether it is a cover story for willingly taking it

You can ingest it orally and it does readily dissolve in water upon stirring. However, unlikely to be used as a means to spike someone, especially if you are in the UK.

Gingernaut · 10/04/2022 22:27

'Crystal meth' is smoked, although methamphetamine can be used in pill form.

It's like the difference between crack cocaine (smokable) and cocaine powder (snortable)

You're right though - drinks are usually spiked with sedatives, rather then 'uppers'.

It's possibly a trip gone wrong.

It might not be the 'drug of choice' to use but if it was what the person doing the alleged spiking had, then it's possible. It depends on who and why really.

But even if they weren't spiked, what does it matter? Hopefully the hospital trip will have scared the shit out of them enough to stop them taking it again (if indeed they did).

glitterkittens2010 · 10/04/2022 22:34

Yes methamphetamine can be taken orally. There are (legal) drug testing kits which check the contents of recreational substances, using a chemical solution which changes colour, and methamphetamine is often found in pills sold as MDMA.

Not a drug of choice for something like date rape, but depends on the reason for spiking.

Could be somene with a vendetta / revenge. Could be someone putting it in their own drink for recreational purposes and then getting drinks mixed up. Could be a "prank" - some people are just arseholes.

Many people who get spiked are actually spiked with alcohol (i.e. the drink is made far stronger than it should be) as alcohol itself is a pretty powerful depressant if you want to incapacitate someone.

maddy68 · 10/04/2022 22:43

It can't be ingested so it's a bollocks story.

AwkwardPaws27 · 10/04/2022 22:46

Source for saying that it can be ingested or snorted - www.letstalkaboutit.nhs.uk/other-services/chemsex-support/crystal-methamphetamine-tina/

GlasswareisOverated · 10/04/2022 22:50

You can take Methamphetamines orally, it just lessens the potency and the time it takes to hit the system is considerably longer
Very surprised that the hospital would test for the substance though, when I turned up to a and e suspecting that someone had spiked me, they refused to check and told me I would have to get the police involved if I wanted to go down that route.

myceliumama · 10/04/2022 22:55

I've never heard of any hospitals testing for drugs either. Even when it comes to possible life or death poisoning etc, it's very difficult. More often diagnosed by symbionts and treatment elimination. There are many, MANY things to test for. Not every chemical even has a reliable established test. Each drug will act differently, be processed by different organs. Commercial drugs tests are easily purchased but i would be livid if the NHS was dishing them out for members of the public. Total waste of money.

Serena1977 · 10/04/2022 23:01

The whole story seems strange and doesn't ring true to me and dh.

The person in question is the golden grandchild so in the family's eyes, it all must have been some baddie corrupting her rather than her choosing to take something of her own accord.

Allsorts1 · 10/04/2022 23:02

@maddy68 This isn’t true. You can take methamphetamine orally. Probably the person wasn’t intending to take it as I’m not sure why they would be hospitalised if it was on purpose, surely if they had intended to they just would have enjoyed the high as it were, rather than go to hospital!

Why do you care OP? It’s not really any of your business is it?

Snoozer11 · 10/04/2022 23:02

I think crystal meth is expensive and not particularly widespread in the UK, so wouldn't be used to spike.

I also don't think it's the sort of drug that would result in someone being hospitalised and on a drip.

But I'm no expert.

Are you sure it's methamphetamine and not mephedrone?

UrsulaBursula · 10/04/2022 23:03

Not that it’s impossible - I’ve never known crystal meth to be the drug of choice to spike drinks Hmm

Doesn’t sit right with me and I’m not sure I believe the story either.

MissM2912 · 10/04/2022 23:04

Sounds a pile of crap. Probably took herseld

UrsulaBursula · 10/04/2022 23:05

Mephadrone I know of and haven’t known it be be a drink spiker drug either.

MissM2912 · 10/04/2022 23:05

If it is found in MDMA she may well have taken that while out partying.

Fraaahnces · 10/04/2022 23:07

I would say that while it’s technically possible, it’s so very unlikely, I’d be calling bullshit.

bananatwain · 10/04/2022 23:07

Very surprised a hospital tested for crystal meth! Very unusual unless the patient needed super specific care which required knowing exactly what they'd taken.

MissM2912 · 10/04/2022 23:09

Does she have adhd? Also used to treat that. And can be snorted and known as ‘baby coke’- had issues in a previous job role with teens doing this with their adhd meds

Gingernaut · 10/04/2022 23:09

There have been instances where Methamphetamine pills have been sold to punters thinking they were getting MDMA or similar.

She probably took a tablet thinking it was one drug, but found out the hard way that dealers aren't into the Sale of Goods Act or customer care.

dropthevipers · 10/04/2022 23:12

You would only spike someone like that if you wanted them to stay up all night cleaning and talking bollocks. Seems doubtful to me.
