So someone in our extended family was taken to hospital and put on a fluid drip after taking a drug. The hospital did tests and said it was methamphetamine (crystal meth). Person in question says they must have had drink spiked as they have no idea how this got into their system! Family believe this story, I dont believe it though. I've never heard of crystal meth being used to spike drinks.

Any thoughts on the plausibility of this alleged spiking?

It is my niece. I have spent the afternoon dealing with a distressed MIL who I think is a) changing what's going on deliberately and only telling half truths b) doesn't understand what happened because she's elderly and doesn't know anything about drugs ( even less than me) c) doesn't want to believe niece took something willingly, whatever it was.

Complicated by the fact that bil doesn't know because sil is keeping it from him so it's all very mysterious.

Thanks all!

@dropthevipers

You would only spike someone like that if you wanted them to stay up all night cleaning and talking bollocks. Seems doubtful to me.
I mean, I wouldn’t be totally averse to getting someone to stay up all night cleaning..!
MissM2912 · 10/04/2022 23:26

Hopefully a silly mistake out partying as opposed to an addiction

Greatoutdoors · 10/04/2022 23:28

Definitely methamphetamine and not Methylenedioxymethamphetamine - because the latter is MDMA and much more common in the UK, especially amongst young people?

It must be a huge worry for you OP.

Galvantula · 10/04/2022 23:37

@MissM2912

Does she have adhd? Also used to treat that. And can be snorted and known as ‘baby coke’- had issues in a previous job role with teens doing this with their adhd meds
In the UK, most people seem to be prescribed methylphenidate in short or long acting form, rather than dexamphetamine.

Those who do commonly get lisdexamphetamine, which is a pro drug and doesn't become the active ingredient until you metabolize it. Therefore it can't be snorted.

The Adderall type dexamphetamine seems way less common here than in the USA.

This is bollocks - Desoxyn (methamphetamine) is almost never prescribed for ADHD. Whatever drug you think you're talking about, it isn't methamphetamine.

That's methylphenidate not methamphetamine isn't it?

www.rxlist.com/consumer_methamphetamine/drugs-condition.htm

And yes- we had multiple young people in a residential unit crushing adhd tablets and snorting it.

TheGirlWhoLived · 10/04/2022 23:54

You don’t tend to drink meth because it doesn’t react fast enough- plus it costs a bomb! Both would stop it being used to spike someone

RewildingAmbridge · 10/04/2022 23:57

Possible she smoked what she thought was a joint and it was laced with meth. So technically spiked I guess

In which country? You might have had young people crushing and snorting ADHD meds but it wasn't methamphetamine they were using.
Gingernaut · 11/04/2022 07:55

Agree with previous users.

Methamphetamine is not used to treat ADHD.

Methylphenidate (Ritalin) is used to treat ADHD.

Dexamphetamine is sometimes used in the UK, but it's not commonly prescribed and the test results won't match methamphetamine.

MissM2912 · 11/04/2022 08:27

It may not have been Methamphetamine but it could have been it it is SOMETIMES used for adhd- was just a suggestion!

There’s a nasty tone to this. Almost like you want everyone to know she’s some sort of low life druggy to de myth the golden grandchild role abs make your kids look better.

Forgive me if I’m wrong 🤷🏼‍♀️

fluffyunicorn1234 · 11/04/2022 08:36

not had experience with drugs myself but my ex had a drug problem he managed to hide for a long time.

i didn't know anything about drugs either apart from what i read occasionally about weed.

the stories he made up i look back at now and laugh. If they want to hide it they will hide it. They will make up excuses, blame other people and blatantly lie. The unfortunate thing is that if you don't know alot about drugs and the signs to look out for then you just believe it to an extent.

You say your MIL is elderly then she will probably believe it because she won't know any different and in my experience they don't listen to you telling them otherwise but in the future they do find out for himself.

My ex managed to fleece his mother out of thousands of pounds through lies that I knew were lies but she was adamant he was telling the truth.

For now I would be a sounding board for your MIL but i wouldn't bother saying oh well me and DH think this, this and this because she won't hear of it.

FWIW your niece is lying. The hospital don't routinely test for drugs unless its absolutely necessary. People don't tend to use meth to spike anyone either. This is a cover story. She's either taken it willingly or taken something else willingly that turned out to be something other than what she was told it was

RestingMurderousFace · 11/04/2022 08:39

Unlikely story. I suspect your instincts are correct, OP.

It's more accurate to say "virtually never used" rather than "sometimes". And I'd be willing to bet my house on the fact that these teenagers you claim to know were not prescribed Desoxyn.

Did you get this from some Daily Mail-esque "HORROR as teenagers prescribed METHAMPHETAMINE for NAUGHTY CHILD SYNDROME" trash article?

…I certainly didn’t read it like that…not sure how you got that and nobody else has? Confused
Knittingchamp · 11/04/2022 11:30

If she's young OP now's not the time for conspiracies (though I get that you just want to get to the truth). Truth is, we all make really stupid decisions at least once when we are young, and she's probably never going to admit to it if she gets a load of crazy blowback. My guess is that she was messing with a weaker drug which was laced with meth - so she won't want to admit to how this happened. Or she felt huge peer pressure to try meth for the first time (which means now is the time to intervene, get her away from that friendship set, and so on). Or some asshole did spike her. Most important thing is she feels like she can admit to what she's done and how its happened else she might be going down a slippery path.

lljkk · 11/04/2022 12:04

It's a weird choice to spike something with.
It's also weird to go to hospital only for 1st ever dose of C-meth.
What do you need to do with the information, OP?
Do you need to protect anyone?

My brothers are addicts, one or both to c-meth.

I agree, I picked up on that a bit too.

I still don't see why it matters whether she took it deliberately or not. The most important thing is that she gets better.

Snoozer11 · 12/04/2022 03:03

I don't think you'd be hospitalised because of Crystal meth?

Agreed. What possible benefit could be in 'proving' your niece is lying? Let's hope it was a silly mistake and she has learnt her lesson.
If not and she's on a slippery slope perhaps she would benefit from having a kind aunt to talk to one to one instead of trying to expose her.
