Money saving expert thinks civil unrest is coming

ivykaty44 · 10/04/2022 19:13

There was a thread on mumsnet recently about civil unrest, views seemed to be it wouldn’t happen, the British don’t protest

Martin Lewis thinks hungry cold people will protest

I think he could be correct, what have people unable to afford heat and food got to lose?

The lack of critical thinking displayed on this thread is comical

Very difficult to think of the bigger picture when your family is cold and starving.

LiveintheNow · 10/04/2022 21:33

Just to add the charity sector is already on its knees after dealing with Covid, people are burnt out and have been leaving in numbers, the support won't be there when things get really bad later in the year.

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 10/04/2022 21:33

There needs to be riots. The Government clearly doesn’t have any intention of getting off their backsides and addressing this with any real urgency. I’m surprised that Sunak hasn’t yet resigned. And the fact that he is acting as the wronged party and demanding there be an investigation into the leak - the sense of entitlement on his part is just unbelievable. He has well and truly blown his chance of ever becoming PM now. With all the money him and his wife have what possible reason could he have for wanting to be in Government. I mean, he’s made it abundantly clear he’s not in the role to actually help anyone. So why is he so keen to stay in post? 🧐

Stinkywizzleteets · 10/04/2022 21:38

it’s not the English way 😂😂😂

No the English way is to doff your cap to your masters and betters and do as you’re told, living in Protestant misery and poverty and then hope for a spot in heaven when you die, yeah? Fingers crossed for you. Eh, wot wot?

For the rest of us we ought to be on the streets showing our displeasure. These energy companies rely on our money as much as we rely on their goods. The government and parliament work for us - It’s time these people were reminded of that. We ought to hold the power, why are we suffering when our MPs and minister have millions in offshore accounts?

lightand · 10/04/2022 21:39

@Tulipblacksmith

I live close by to an Aldi sandwiched between quite a few areas of high deprivation. It’s always been busy, particularly at weekends. Now it’s absolutely rammed even in the middle of the week. (Think Christmas Eve rammed).
I live near a naice town. The Lidl has never been busier.
Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 10/04/2022 21:39

I will add that ML clearly thinks that this is a complete and utter mess which is why he’s felt the need to speak out. I only wish we could have him as our PM or chancellor. We need people in Government with common sense and empathy.

BigGreen · 10/04/2022 21:41

Mad, isn't it? The new plan is to build a ton of nuclear plants which won't be ready for donkey's years. Instead of massively expanding onshore wind for example, for a climate win-win.

TooBigForMyBoots · 10/04/2022 21:41

...some people are really thinking it is a black and white situation and not a global issue. A different party in power is not going to solve the situation.

Everyone knows it's a global issue. The smart ones also know that the government of the day has the ability to decide who pays. The Tories tend place that burden on the poorest members of society. Austerity didn't have to happen. It was a choice the Conservative party made.

Alexandra2001 · 10/04/2022 21:41

The lack of critical thinking displayed on this thread is comical

In other words 'You don't have a coherent argument, so resort to attempting to belittle folk who have a different opinion to yours'

Blinky21 · 10/04/2022 21:41

I thought the new crime and policing bill restricted rights to protest, either way protest by not voting Tory in the local elections in May and kicking them out in the next General Election

...or investing in far better home insulation, possibly the quickest way to reduce bills and it boosts the economy.
ivykaty44 · 10/04/2022 21:43

A different party in power is not going to solve the situation.

a different government could handle the issues differently so those at the poorest end of society don't suffer as they are now

presently we have a government that doesn't appear to have any idea of how people are struggling - proved by the tax avoiding chancellors wife fiasco. When you have 10 x as much money as you can spend in a lifetime and try to avoid paying tax legally - then your husband takes away money from the poorest in society

We need riots to stop this corrupt government stealing even more of our money to line their own pockets. Don your yellow jackets and be prepared to make a stand against the cost of living crisis created by this wretched government.

ivykaty44 · 10/04/2022 21:46

...or investing in far better home insulation, possibly the quickest way to reduce bills and it boosts the economy.

there are protests to get this done by the government for free, but public are against the protests??

yet it would save £400 a year on most homes, year on year this would obviously increase now to £600

What I don’t get is this.

The Tories are the ‘party for the economy’

But how much consumer spending is going to happen in this climate? Very little.

So luxury things like hairdressers, nail bars etc will be the first to hit the wall. Then or maybe first the tourist and hospitality industry.

Interiors, clothes, white goods are going to be replaced much less frequently.

Why can’t the ‘party of the economy’ see this?

Totalwasteofpaper · 10/04/2022 21:49

@MaryAndHerNet

I don't think protests, I think crime will increase first. Violent robbery and theft from shops etc. Burglaries too I think.

People with nothing have nothing lose and if they become desperate, they'll do desperate things.

100% this

And there will be "rioting" smashing up and robbing shops this summer in london and big cities.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 10/04/2022 21:49

I do think people are going to start thinking along the lines of ' why would Sunaks wife agree to pay millions in taxes to keep him in a 150k job ?'

Kendodd · 10/04/2022 21:50

Thing is, many of the people who will suffer most, will have voted for Brexit and the Tories, both of which will have contributed significantly to the poverty they find themselves in. I don't think there will be riots, how can you riot against something you voted for?

Haffiana · 10/04/2022 21:53

@dubyalass

I've got the telly on, and flicking through the channels I found 'Britain's Most Expensive Houses'. I didn't watch it, but it did strike me as totally tone deaf and vulgar. I'm fucking sick of having wealth and privilege shoved in my face, and I'm in a relatively stable financial position (for now). People are on the bones of their arses and it's only going to get worse - I feel like the rich are laughing at the rest of us plebs. "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche."
THIS is what stops people from effectively pursuing change and improvement.

As long as the poor blame the rich, 'other' the rich, feel that the rich are laughing at them etc etc and ooh, shoving it in their face even on the telly, then the REAL culprits get away with it. The real culprits are our shitshow of a government.

Our government was voted in by people who thought that foreigners were causing all their hardship. Vote Tory, get rid of all those immigrants TAKING OUR JOBS AND THE FOOD OFF OUR PLATES. But what to do now, - all the foreigners have gone now, haven't they? Kicked out. Who else is there to blame?

Oh, well it must be the rich who are causing all the hardship. Hey, lets vote fucking Tory again, cos the rich are sneering at us and we are offended. The rich are SHOVING IT IN OUR FACES and should wear a triangle because they are not human.

Divide and rule. You have fallen for the oldest, most obvious political ploy of all. The real culprit escapes yet again.

colosmbo · 10/04/2022 21:57

A different party in power is not going to solve the situation.

A different party could mitigate the impact though.

woodhill · 10/04/2022 22:00

There's still plenty of people from overseas still here anyway so that doesn't really work

I have been wondering exactly this. Where is party of the economy? What was the point of Eat out to Help Out and those business grants if a lot of the businesses that were kept viable are now going to be folding due to insufficient customers? I live in quite a naice area but most people are cutting back on their discretionary spending.
Gilead · 10/04/2022 22:02

Good. If I can, I will.

woodhill · 10/04/2022 22:03

Labour don't seem to be speaking about their policies though

MrsSugar · 10/04/2022 22:05

Unfortunately I don’t think their will be any major unrest…. Ppl will be too cold, hungry, tired and just fucking worn out to kick up. Which is really sad. It’s an absolute disgrace. I feel like I am just getting poorer and poorer. Every trip to the supermarket/bill just seems to be dearer n dearer !
