I'd like to shout about my new hobby!

I've waited and waited for YEARS for this to be socially acceptable and whilst it's popular in New York (and London apparently) it's not something I see people doing in my area. So I've finally had my "fuck it" moment and at the age of 37 bought... rollerskates! Practised yesterday in the park and I absolutely bloody loved it! Had a few 🤔 looks but nobody laughed and the best bit is I've inspired two friends to go out and buy some too! It's fun, active and a great thigh workout.

Best thing about getting older... I really don't give a fuck what other people think anymore. Anyway, I'm chuffed to bits that I've found a new hobby so I thought I'd bore you lot with it. Like Ross Geller "not knowing when to shut up" I've found My Thing! 😄🛼💕

This is ace! Never too old! I wouldn't risk it personally, but only because I'm already quite tall and boots + wheels adds another 3 ish inches to your height. I just means further to fall and I don't bounce very well Grin

Enjoy it!

WhereIsMyGlasses · 09/04/2022 17:52

I expected you not to be able to tell us what your new hobby was because it was too outing, or does that only apply to husband mamil hobbies 🤔😂

Tittyfilarious · 09/04/2022 17:55

That's fabulous Star

Lilolily · 09/04/2022 17:59

I love this! You go girl! ❤️

Justanotherobserver · 09/04/2022 18:04

That sounds great. Enjoy!

Don't know if it's still the case but roller blades were hugely popular in Amsterdam when I lived there in the early 2000s. You'd always see people skating along the roads, in amongst the bikes, and in parks. It was lovely to see.

MsNorris · 09/04/2022 18:07

I got some for Christmas and I’m 45, I go to a roller rink rather as it’s smoother. There’s usually a few of us oldies there. I love it.

MsNorris · 09/04/2022 18:08

I did fall over last year, got my wheels in a tangle, I fell backwards and was quite sore for a while. Apparently it’s better to fall forwards and let your knees and hands take the strain rather than your bum and back.

Kanaloa · 09/04/2022 18:12

I love it! People probably weren’t looking at you like 🤔 but more like ‘that looks good.’ Plus it just naturally draws the eye, someone whizzing by gracefully on roller skates.

DD saw a roller skate disco on TV and she wants to go to one - not that there’s one anywhere near us of course! Hopefully will find one nearby for her birthday.

watcherintherye · 09/04/2022 18:18

That's great! At least its not cycling, or you wouldn't have been able to tell us about it! Grin

ItsPrettyObvious · 09/04/2022 18:26

Fuck imagine if it was cycling or fishing?! I'd not be able to tell people it would be too outing. All the undercover journalists would be trying to find my identity. I'd have to put my birth certificate into a private room with all those criss cross red laser lights 🤣

I loved roller skating as a child/teen, at the age of 34 during lockdown round one I ordered a pair online for me and DD and we spent loads of time skating on abandoned roads on our estate. We now use a long/wide cycle path on the edge of the estate next to us.
We have a skating rink here but it’s bloody expensive so we don’t really go a lot.

HeyMicky · 09/04/2022 18:31

Enjoy! I've just turned 42 and since last September I have been doing roller derby. It's such a joy!

Mulledmead · 09/04/2022 18:33

I am 39 and go skating with my kids most weeks at the local school hall. It's fun and quite popular with adults and children alike around here. You can even do artistic grades if you fancy...

Enjoy!

NoodieRoodie · 09/04/2022 18:37

My skates arrived last week, I was inspired after taking DD (8) to a roller disco and realising I was still as bloody talented as I was 30 years ago! My mum was also inspired and got hers a fortnight ago Grin

Gowithme · 09/04/2022 18:37

It's wonderful to find something you love, don't let anyone put you off!! I'm like Bambi on ice so it's my idea of hell, but it sounds like it's perfect for you.

myceliumama · 09/04/2022 18:40

I've got a pair of Bauer blade to quad conversions and I love them. They've got pink coloured hangers and laces and light up wheels!! I love skating and visiting my local Rink.

I also grow mushrooms as a hobby and breed pedigree Guinea pigs for showing.

Duchess379 · 09/04/2022 18:43

Awesome! 😆💕🤷🏼‍♀️🛼

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 09/04/2022 18:46

My Dd 24 has some very cool pale blue and yellow ones. She goes to the skatepark where she lives with the kids she looks after. She’s made loads of new friends (and a very cute skater bf). It terrifies me as i have the grace and co ordination of a bag of spuds. But go you OP, I always wanted to but well, bag of spuds.

I remember seeing a man skating along in Amsterdam clad in nothing but a rubber mankini and roller boots! Imagine the damage if he fell down Confused. Have fun OP, it's great when you find something you love.
Nelliephant1 · 09/04/2022 18:53

Good for you!!

From the title of your thread I have to say that I expected that it was something about you becoming a Town Crier!

Enjoy your roller skating!

beastlyslumber · 09/04/2022 18:58

I fell over in my skates a couple of years ago and hit my head and hurt my back. Gave up after that because it was scary how bad that could have been. It's great fun but you need the protective gear and yeah, try to fall forwards.

ItsPrettyObvious · 09/04/2022 19:01

Town crier 🤣🤣🤣
