What to do without Mr Osman

Ok fairly lighthearted post to offset general doom and gloom! Richard Osman says he is leaving Pointless (Except for Celebrity editions) So he has such a good chemistry with AA.Says he is leaving due to other commitments .AA will have guest hosts .Wont be the same!

OP posts:
Flavabobble · 09/04/2022 10:07

On the upside, it's to concentrate on his writing!

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 09/04/2022 10:08

No problem. Don’t like either of them, or the programme.

HollowTalk · 09/04/2022 10:10

Whenever I watch that programme I think how bored the presenters must be. Rich, but bored.

I agree. It's easy money though and they film several episodes in one day, so it's not like it's 365.
HollowTalk · 09/04/2022 10:20

It's very easy money! Most of it is reading aloud and asking the same questions programme after programme. I only watch it when I'm at my mum's, but I lose the will to live.

FlipFlops4Me · 09/04/2022 10:27

I like him in House of Games very much so I hope he continues with that.

balalake · 09/04/2022 10:27

I agree it won't be the same. Perhaps time to end the show, accept it has been a success, but had its day.

thegreylady · 09/04/2022 10:36

I love the programme especially the rapport between AA and RO. Of the two I think I like AA better but maybe because he reveals more of t himself. I believe HoG will carry on. I do enjoy that but not as much as Pointless.

Yes. It must be so boring doing the same thing over and over again. I don't know how they make it sound interesting!
flapjackfairy · 09/04/2022 10:43

I love Richard Osman and we always watch pointless so I agree it wont be the same anymore and they would be best to end it altogether. I am getting fed up of questions on tennis and the periodic table anyway

Newgirls · 09/04/2022 10:47

I’m amazed he’s done it so long. He’s a multi millionaire and it seems so repetitive. His first novel is becoming a Spielberg film so he’ll be busy with that!

squashyhat · 09/04/2022 10:48

Leaving to concentrate on his writing? Oh dear. I mean I like him on HoG but he's no Dickens is he?

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 09/04/2022 10:54

I'm sorry but I am not a fan of his presenting, I find most of his jokes poor and cringe-worthy. I won't miss him on the show, and look forward to seeing a variety of other people interacting with Xander.

As for his books, they are light entertainment. I can see how they appeal to a certain market, and have read them myself, but they are not worthy of permanent retention on my bookshelves. Pulp fiction, as it were. They very much read as though they were screenplays so I'm not surprised to see a movie is in the making.

BattledoreAndShuttlecock · 09/04/2022 10:56

Xander seems like he's on autopilot to me but Osman always seems genuinely interested in the mechanics of the game and how it changes over time (as am I, which is why I still watch after umpteen years).

One of the things that makes it worth watching after all this time is the dynamics of their relationship, the running jokes, the fact that they're making their own fun in quite a repetitive environment and will go off on wild tangents while the contestants look on in bafflement. It's structured like a classic "two men stuck together" sitcom.

brokengoalposts · 09/04/2022 10:57

I used to love pointless but it's so boring now, it needs a bit of a change, so this'll be good for the show, I reckon.

tackling · 09/04/2022 10:59

Grin no idea who any of these people are or what the quality of this bloke's writing is like, but I'm mildly amused by the snobbishness above.

I'm pretty sure Charles Dickens was looked down upon as "pulp fiction" of the day.

RedRec · 09/04/2022 11:03

Armstrong is an automaton ("thank you very much indeed, Richard") and Osman is the brains of the outfit. Am actually surprised he has done it for so long.
At least House of Games is on every weekday too, where he is more himself and not shackled by the grim banter with Armstrong.

Costacoffeeplease · 09/04/2022 11:04

Never watch pointless or anything else he’s in. Read his first book and don’t intend to read any others so happily I won’t be affected in any way

YouLando · 09/04/2022 11:15

I like the quiz part of Pointless, but hate the chats with the contestants, and the inane banter between AA and RO, so I try to remember to pause it at the beginning, so I can zoom through all the waffling.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 09/04/2022 11:17

I much prefer House of Games, have you watched it OP?

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 09/04/2022 11:22

WHAT? NO!
See, I’ve been so distracted by the Sunak thing, the real news passed me by.
This is as bad as the Cook/Moore split. Or Lee and Herring. Or Newman and Baddiel - I can’t go through that again.
Grin

Tasteslikeregret · 09/04/2022 11:26

Yes. It must be so boring doing the same thing over and over again

Isn’t that the same for most jobs?

airrrrAIRRRRiELLLL · 09/04/2022 11:39

Their banter is too strained a lot of the time. Was funny in the early days but misses the mark now. AA's false laugh when he realises he's missed a 'witty' RO comment is dire.

Thank goodness 'Thank you very much for that Richard' will die the death it deserves.

His books are formulaic and obvious. Please no more!

Long live House of Games though.

iklboo · 09/04/2022 11:41

@Toddlerteaplease - I've been on Pointless. It's actually a lot of fun. Loads of stuff doesn't make it to the edit, lots of rude jokes, swearing, banter etc. AA & RO talk to the contestants a lot too.

FuckYouDebbie · 09/04/2022 11:44

There's always The Chase OP. Cheeky little bit of Bradley while you're getting tea ready.
