Dh has peed blood

And we are both worried sick as googling has brought up a whole load about all types of cancers including prostate.

We called 111 last night and the nurse that triaged him has prescribed him antibiotics for a suspected urine infection but also really stressed following it up at the gp. I didn't even know men can get urine infections.

He says his testicles are quite sore and painful and he's peed blood several times yesterday but not today. He's started taking the AB and I am hoping and praying it's just an infection.

We have young dc and I've had cried on and off since yday. I don't think I could cope with any horrible news. I've lost both my parents at a fairly young age and he's all I've got.

I guess I'm just looking for a hand hold because I don't really know what else to ask. I can't really think straight since he's told me.

It’s a urine infection. That’s it.

worriedsicktonight · 07/04/2022 23:50

@Waterfordaston I really hope you are right !

Could be loads and loads of things that are less serious. It very likely is. Well done for checking it out though and hope you’re taking care of yourself too 💐

It is very likely only a water infection. I have had several recently with lots of blood. Stop googling and give the anti biotics a chance to work. Anyone can get a water infection, we all have bladders and kidneys and pee.

Belindabelle · 07/04/2022 23:53

Men can and frequently do get urine infections. I am married to one of them. However in order to establish if this is the case the urine has to be tested and this means a GP appt. Yes prostate cancer is a thing, but it is generally something you live with, not die from. At lest that is what we were told. Again this is something that can be established by a test performed by the GP.

I know getting a doctors appointment can be difficult, but it really is your first port of call in this instance.

UTIs in men are common and its standard to give antibiotics immediately I like they do with women. Very common and sounds like they are doing their job.

My dh had regular urine infections when he had a kidney stone. I also have had blood from a bad infection

surreygirl1987 · 08/04/2022 00:10

I peed blood once and it was a urine infection! Men can definitely get them.

worriedsicktonight · 08/04/2022 00:14

Thank you for all your lovely and reassuring replies - can't believe I never knew about men getting utis!

My DH (then boyfriend) experienced the same about 20 years ago, the gp took it seriously and sent him for a camera up his penis. Nothing sinister found and he's never had any problems since. Try not to worry.

AmberGer · 08/04/2022 06:59

My brother did when he had a kidney stone

Polyanthus2 · 08/04/2022 07:02

I was going to suggest kidney stones.
Probably get a scan or ultrasound to check.
2 people I know have had them recently - fixed after a few weeks.

passport123 · 08/04/2022 07:06

Antibiotics on the phone for a man peeing blood is really crap medicine. Get him to the GP.

HardRockOwl · 08/04/2022 07:11

It's highly likely to be a uti but you must get him to see a dr. It happened to my husband and it was a kidney stone. It happened to my dad and it was his first sign of kidney cancer - I will stress though that my dad was in his 60s when this happened, an insulin dependent diabetic and more at risk of kidney cancer.

If antibiotics clear it up then great. If they don't, request a scan

Getotcheckednow · 08/04/2022 07:11

PPs are very likely right that it is just an infection. But my DH is still here and doing well because his GP was alert to more sinister possibilities and a serious cancer was found. Then the NHS performed at its best. You can’t be sure, the experts can. Please don’t wait.

This. Kidney cancer is often overlooked. If it doesn't clear up, insist on a scan.
HardRockOwl · 08/04/2022 08:49

@Hotpinkangel19 antibiotics cleared it up with my dad. It then returned 6 weeks later and it was only then a scan was arranged. So it's really important to see the GP and just be mindful really.

But chances are .. it's nothing serious!

chorusline79 · 08/04/2022 08:52

My DH had this several years ago too in his mid 30s. Got sent for the willy camera which found nothing and it just went away and hasn't had it since. As others say probs just an infection so try not to spiral and assume anything serious.

Definitely. It's probably nothing serious. But like you, my Dad also had Kidney Cancer, but his was caught too late. I'd rather make someone aware that it may be a rare possibility!

FrancesFlute · 08/04/2022 09:01

My dad had this recently. Your husband needs to get a urine sample tested ASAP.

If its infection, great. My dad's showed no infection and its been a bit more serious. Not trying to scare you but I think you need to revisit. Hopefully it's just a UTI!

TeaandHobnobs · 08/04/2022 09:04

My DH had this in his mid 20s. In his case it turned out to be bilharzia / schistosomiasis, which had been dormant in his body since his gap year in Africa many years previous. But that is pretty unusual!

HardRockOwl · 08/04/2022 09:05

@Hotpinkangel19 sorry to hear about your dad. Was the same for mine too unfortunately.

It's wise to be vigilant to these things when they appear out of the blue with no history

Ineverpromisedyouarosegarden · 08/04/2022 09:09

I would think a UTI or kidney stones more likely than cancer. He does need to get checked out though.
