Dh has peed blood

And we are both worried sick as googling has brought up a whole load about all types of cancers including prostate.

We called 111 last night and the nurse that triaged him has prescribed him antibiotics for a suspected urine infection but also really stressed following it up at the gp. I didn't even know men can get urine infections.

He says his testicles are quite sore and painful and he's peed blood several times yesterday but not today. He's started taking the AB and I am hoping and praying it's just an infection.

We have young dc and I've had cried on and off since yday. I don't think I could cope with any horrible news. I've lost both my parents at a fairly young age and he's all I've got.

I guess I'm just looking for a hand hold because I don't really know what else to ask. I can't really think straight since he's told me.

Although UTIs can happen in men, they are more likely to be associated with other issues, such as stones. They do need further investigation and your DH does need to see a GP and discuss next steps. In my DH's case the antibiotics cleared his active infection but further investigations (scans) of his kidneys showed that one was not working. In his case it was caused by a genetic abnormality in the kidney and ureter (likely that kidney had never worked but was vulnerable to infection) and he was advised to have the kidney removed. That was 20 years ago when he was in his 30s.

Ineverpromisedyouarosegarden · 08/04/2022 09:11

Could also be prostatitis.

MaxNormal · 08/04/2022 09:16

DH did and GP gave him antibiotics for a UTI, he collapsed a week later from a kidney stone. Horrendously painful but fortunately not life threatening.
He'd been peeing what looked like coke! He's never had an actual UTI.

@passport123

Antibiotics on the phone for a man peeing blood is really crap medicine. Get him to the GP.
Not for OOH GP, they’re aren’t going to see him and do investigations for cancer etc and blood tests and referrals at the time of night, so they are correct in treating for a UTI and recommending seeing own GP or contacting them today. If he was haemorrhaging blood then it would be A&E
Hotpinkangel19 · 08/04/2022 09:19
@Hotpinkangel19 sorry to hear about your dad. Was the same for mine too unfortunately.

It's wise to be vigilant to these things when they appear out of the blue with no history
I'm so sorry.

AllAmericanGirl · 08/04/2022 09:47

It's most likely an infection but anything like this really needs following up. When my dad peed blood it was bladder cancer.

Flapjacker48 · 08/04/2022 09:48

See the GP - men can also suffer non cancerous inflamation/infections of the prostate which often need extended (4-6 weeks) antibiotics and follow up with urology as needed.

BoodleBug51 · 08/04/2022 09:51

He does need a urine test, and I'd be fairly insistent with your GP surgery today.

And just check he hasn't eaten beetroot in the last 24 hours..........

Ohmnomnom · 08/04/2022 09:53

My Dad had prostate cancer and blood in the urine was one of the symptoms. However, he also had blood in semen, had problems when trying to urinate, was weak and run down, and pain in the lower back and kidneys. He eventually stopped being able to urinate at all and was rushed into hospital and given a catheter and they took 2 litres out of him!

I wouldn't worry too much without other symptoms present but always best to get it checked out Smile

Simonjt · 08/04/2022 09:53

I had this, mine was caused by prostatitis, it took about six weeks of antibiotics to completely clear up. I didn’t have any lasting effects, it was maybe six years ago.

Barkingmadhouse · 08/04/2022 10:13

My partner had this before - hospital treat it as suspected internal bleeding which thankfully it wasn't. They did however take it much more seriously than just prescribing antibiotics.
The local hospital transferred us to the major hospital for full investigation including scans.
I hope it's nothing serious but I would consider pushing for investigation

knittingaddict · 08/04/2022 10:26

@Waterfordaston

It’s a urine infection. That’s it.
Well done. I suppose op can stop worrying now. Angry

My husband had blood in his urine and was treated for an infection. A few months later, after we had moved areas, he was diagnosed with bladder cancer. Blood in urine for men is always a cause for more investigation.

I'm not saying this to worry you op, but because early treatment is very successful and downplaying symptoms is never a good idea.

My husband had various treatments for years because it kept coming back. He is now cancer free, has most of his bladder and prostate and is absolutely fine. Try not to panic. If it is something worse than an infection he will get the help he needs. Hope it is harmless obviously, but if it's not, you can both do this.

I know this isn't a funny thread, but this did make me smile. My husband had a roasted beetroot salad a few years ago. He was so close to phoning his consultant to report that his cancer was back and then remembered what he had eaten. So good advice.
Housetreecar · 08/04/2022 10:31

DH had this, it was a kidney stone

knittingaddict · 08/04/2022 10:31

@HardRockOwl

It's highly likely to be a uti but you must get him to see a dr. It happened to my husband and it was a kidney stone. It happened to my dad and it was his first sign of kidney cancer - I will stress though that my dad was in his 60s when this happened, an insulin dependent diabetic and more at risk of kidney cancer.

If antibiotics clear it up then great. If they don't, request a scan

My husbands first incident of blood in his urine was cleared up with antibiotics and then ignored. It was still cancer.
femfemlicious · 08/04/2022 10:32

I would go to a&e. I peed blood and it was kidney failure. But i guess he wiuld have a lot more symptons.

worriedsicktonight · 08/04/2022 12:20

Thanks everyone. Really sorry to all those who have lost parents to cancer Thanks I lost my mum to cancer too, and any symptom that relates to it now causes me deep anxiety.

I'm definitely going to get him an appointment with the gp as soon as I can. He is so resistant to anything medical, but I'll just have to push my way through it and ignore him.

He hasn't been eating beetroot by any chance? My brother had bright red pee after beetroot

worriedsicktonight · 08/04/2022 15:10

@Tulip1985 no, no beetroot.

He's been to the gp and done a urine sample and blood has been detected. The gp has sent the urine off to get it checked but has said because he's on AB already it will come back neg for infection so will be referring him to the hospital as a cancer referral urgently anyway.
Just about holding myself together.

I keep imagining him dying and life without him, day to day. The emptiness, the loneliness, the mountain of grief on my heart like when I lost my lovely mum. But he was there with me through it all, he was my rock. Without him I'll crumble. Our youngest dc is 4. Every time I think of her i am crying uncontrollably.

OP, stop it,seriously. Go out for a walk and get some fresh air. Just wait and see what the hospital say after tests, my ds was sent immediately to the hospital from the GP, the GP said there were things they needed to rule out but she wouldn't go through them with me until after the tests. Tests were clear.
Waterfordaston · 08/04/2022 15:20

Did the doc say “urgent referral for cancer?”

Or just “urgent referral”?

Bladder cancer presents as painless blood in urine. You’re being, with respect, ridiculous and it’s you that needs to see a GP

Isonthecase · 08/04/2022 15:21

We also know someone this was a sign of kidney cancer in. Peed blood once, decided to go to the GP anyway just in case, cancer diagnosed and kidney whipped out, no problems since. It was only fine because he got it checked out promptly.

worriedsicktonight · 08/04/2022 15:21

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor the gp said the pain together with the bleeding is worrying. He also said it could be bladder, prostate or kidney cancer and that's what the bloods would rule out. He did say that due to dh's age it's very unlikely it's any of them but they do need to rule it out

OP posts:
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/04/2022 15:21

And they would be negligent not to send him for investigation when presenting as he is.
