Dh has peed blood

And we are both worried sick as googling has brought up a whole load about all types of cancers including prostate.

We called 111 last night and the nurse that triaged him has prescribed him antibiotics for a suspected urine infection but also really stressed following it up at the gp. I didn't even know men can get urine infections.

He says his testicles are quite sore and painful and he's peed blood several times yesterday but not today. He's started taking the AB and I am hoping and praying it's just an infection.

We have young dc and I've had cried on and off since yday. I don't think I could cope with any horrible news. I've lost both my parents at a fairly young age and he's all I've got.

I guess I'm just looking for a hand hold because I don't really know what else to ask. I can't really think straight since he's told me.

Gosh. Seriously you’re massively overreacting and the people popping up saying “oh I knew someone once who…” aren’t helpful.

worriedsicktonight · 08/04/2022 15:46

@Waterfordaston I don't think you're being very helpful either.

Do you have health anxiety anyway? It might be an infection, urinary or kidney, or something else but the type of cancers you refer to are unusual in under 50s even with family history. Has he had bloods taken? A referral will hopefully get to the crux of the issue.

@Waterfordaston FFS - how is being aggressive towards the OP going to help her?? She’s explained her history which means that understandably she is going to be anxious.
OP - my DH has bladder cancer and the outcomes now are pretty good as long as they catch it early. He presented with blood in urine but also some other symptoms. Just to say that even if it is bad news (which is unlikely as he sounds relatively young), then it isn’t necessarily as bad as you think. Sounds as if you’re doing all the right things Flowers

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/04/2022 15:51

NRTFT just beginning and end. I had urine infection once and went to walk in centre. It came in over a day and in a few hours my wee looked like rose wine. Sorry for tmi. I was in a lot of pain.

worriedsicktonight · 08/04/2022 15:52

@LIZS yes I do, after my mums death, which doesn't help. I'm aware of it though and I'm trying to keep myself busy and distracted and holding on for the results. The gp did say what you said about those cancers being rare under 50s so I am holding on to that right now.

OP posts:
LIZS · 08/04/2022 15:55

Have you sought help for the anxiety? Whatever the outcome it would be positive to do so.

worriedsicktonight · 08/04/2022 16:01

@LIZS I did but and was referred but then covid happened and never tried to follow it up since.
@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor the gp said the pain together with the bleeding is worrying. He also said it could be bladder, prostate or kidney cancer and that's what the bloods would rule out. He did say that due to dh's age it's very unlikely it's any of them but they do need to rule it out
Very unlikely - concentrate on that!

RippleQueen · 08/04/2022 16:02

He needs to be checked for prostate cancer as it can cause blood in urine

MayMorris · 08/04/2022 16:27

I’d definitely question the gp
Nurse should not be prescribing antibiotics without confirmation of a bacterial infection these days- because of resistance
He needs at very least a urine sample…whilst he may not see blood it could still be bleeding. I’ve had many samples with blood in where I’ve not seen any evidence myself. It’s a few minutes test for gp…hence why it was wrong for nurse to prescribe without testing sample first.

Having said that blood is common with UTIs so don’t assume worse, and now he’s on antibiotics FINISH THE COURSE unless a gp tells him to stop. Antibiotics will take 2-3 to start to work, if it is bacterial.

Ring gp, get a urine sample submitted.

MayMorris · 08/04/2022 16:31

I’d add for women, don’t know about blokes, blood without any cause is not massively uncommon…usually turns out to be interstitial cystitis which is often not detected as an infection in samples.

Sometimes, as people say a small stone may have been passed…but no one can prove that retrospectively

MayMorris · 08/04/2022 16:32

So do lots of other much more benign things…stop catastrophising
sueelleker · 08/04/2022 16:59

If it doesn't clear, push for more investigation. I don't want to worry you, but my DH started this at the start of 2021. We had 5 lots of antibiotics, and loads of scans; in November they discovered ,and removed most of, a bladder tunour. He'd been grossly anaemic, with associated dizziness, and had to have several iron infusions.
In January this year they discovered the cancer had metastatised, and he suffered a major stroke, from which he didn't recover. I lost him on January 30th this year.
I'm not exactly blaming anyone, but I still feel they should have been more proactive, especially as all the urine samples we had to take in with each appointment were dark red.
I hope everything goes well for you, but DON'T be put off.

QueefofSheena · 08/04/2022 17:02

I peed blood after doing a juice fast. Never again

knittingaddict · 08/04/2022 17:08

@Waterfordaston

Gosh. Seriously you’re massively overreacting and the people popping up saying “oh I knew someone once who…” aren’t helpful.
Yes because the "someone I knew once" is my husband.

None of us know if it's a simple infection or more serious, but literally one of the first responses was telling op that it was an infection and to suggest she is overreacting. The more sensible people are saying get this investigated just in case.

Some people, men in particular, aren't great at getting help early enough for medical issues. There has been a TV campaign in the last few years about men finding blood in their urine and how important it is to get it looked at. I think they know better than you.

Op really hope that it's just an infection, but whatever it is I wish you both well.

knittingaddict · 08/04/2022 17:12

My husband was about 50 when he was diagnosed.

Memyselfandfood · 08/04/2022 17:43

I had pain and blood, it was nothing ( most likely a stone that was passed) scary, but turned out fine. Flowers

Bagelsandbrie · 08/04/2022 20:22

I was recently referred for persistent blood in my urine. I ended up having a kidney biopsy - which wasn’t fun- and of course I was worried sick but it turned out to be something weird called thin membrane disease which is something I had never heard of, causes no long term issues and doesn’t need any treatment as such. I had worried myself daft googling everything but in the end it was something that I’d never knew existed. Honestly you just can’t worry about these things until you know what they are. You need to learn to literally stop your anxious thoughts before they take hold of you, easier said than done I know.

worriedsicktonight · 08/04/2022 20:57

No I really appreciate all the posters who are posting their personal experiences. It shows how important it is to follow it up and not waste time. Thanks to everyone who posted and shared their experiences Thanks

I'll keep you all updated on this thread. Praying for a positive outcome.

My Dad's had 3 bouts of bladder cancer. As it goes, he's had much more concerning and life threatening health problems other than the C word.

I'm glad the doctor is investigating but don't worry too much - better to do investigations and it be for nothing.

Quirrelsotherface · 08/04/2022 21:09

Bladder cancer presents as painless blood in urine. You’re being, with respect, ridiculous and it’s you that needs to see a GP

That's horrible. How about you see someone for your anger issues?

worriedsicktonight · 08/04/2022 21:10

@Quirrelsotherface thank you, I agree !

OP posts:
purplesequins · 08/04/2022 21:21

most likely this is just a utii
however, it needs to be followed up as it could be a symptom for other illnesses. as pp described.
for my fil it was a symptom of polyps which were turning cancerous.

worriedsicktonight · 08/04/2022 21:38

@FatEaredFuck so sorry to hear about your dad's health struggles Thanks

Ps I love your username Grin
