Upper classes gravel their drive; lower classes use concrete

Did anyone else see this article about upper and lower classes last weekend in The Daily Mail?

It says things like, ‘Upper classes wear clothes that are out of fashion; lower classes wear clothes that are in fashion’ and ‘upper classes go horse riding on holiday; lower classes do binge-drinking and get sunburned’.

Was it an April Fool?

It’s just that I now keep doing it in my head: ‘Upper classes draw water from a well; lower classes use a tap’ … ‘Upper classes drink Pepsi; lower class people drink Coca Cola’ etc.

So, please enlighten me: was it an April Fool? Because it really can’t have been for real … and what are yours (lighthearted)? (Upper classes do x; lower classes do y) …

I don’t even have a drive, what class does that make me? Grin

SpaghettiNotCourgetti · 05/04/2022 19:47

We have gravel (and weeds!) and I'm a right scumbag so I don't think it could possibly be right.

(Me too)

OP this is just another Nancy Mitford U and non-U thing. The Sunday Times Style magazine used to run them every week in the 90s (and might do still for all I know). Not an April fool.

NeedleNoodle3 · 05/04/2022 19:47

I have block paving.

ProfYaffle · 05/04/2022 19:48

Loads of lower class gravel drives studded with cat shit around here.

bloodywhitecat · 05/04/2022 19:48

I have a gravel drive and I identify with lots of things in the 'upper class' lists, I is by no means upper class. I think it has to be a spoof surely?

Anyway, don’t the truly posh live up a mud track, accessible only by their 30 year old Volvo?

Our driveway is scattered with diamonds and we have möet in the lake. Gravel is for the wannabes.

(We actually do have gravel but it’s looking quite bare atm).

chipshopElvis · 05/04/2022 19:53

Ha ha, according to that I am upper class. 😜

Fordian · 05/04/2022 19:57

I have resin.

Deal with that....

😂😂😂

I've nannied for loads of Upper Class families. None of them have gone horse riding on holiday - they tend to ride regularly at home and do other things on holiday. Middle class children might, if they don't normally get to.

Well, surely. It is completely bonkers.

The person who wrote the article is called Detlev Pilitz. He seems real enough. It doesn’t say ‘April Fool’ backwards, does it?

Detlev Pilitz is a published author

It also says beach holidays are lower class. Take that, Princess Margaret of Mustique Grin
TooBigForMyBoots · 05/04/2022 20:02

I've just checked and I have a concrete drive, so I must be lower class. Just as well the DM provides a handy guide for these things.

Changechangychange · 05/04/2022 20:04

@TabithaTittlemouse

Detlev Pilitz is a published author
Author of a book about the English class system, which he is clearly trying to flog more copies of here…

Nothing wrong with that of course, it’s what authors do, but it doesn’t mean any of it is accurate.

Spearpeas · 05/04/2022 20:10

… and he got his material from staying with Theresa May’s father, Hubert Brasier.

you live and learn (I also thought that bit was a send-up).

What’s the difference between a swimming costume and a swimsuit?!

LER83 · 05/04/2022 20:12

I always remember my (upper class but tried to pretend she wasn't) friend going to a village meeting with her dad to talk about what they could do about the new people who had moved to the area, they had taken up the gravel driveway and replaced it with block paving! They were all outraged the 'Londoners' were ruining the area 😂 Also reminds me when my Auntie and Uncle were the talk of their village as they had painted the sign with the name of the house on red, soo common apparently!

… but the opposite of horse riding isn’t binge-drinking and getting sun-burned.

Isn’t there a sort of ‘Little Britain’ narrated by Tom Baker tone to that list?

RichardMarxisinnocent · 05/04/2022 20:14

I am very surprised to learn that I am upper class due to wearing clothes which are out of fashion.

Spearpeas · 05/04/2022 20:14

Lower class: Doctor Who
Upper class: Doctor Whom
