Upper classes gravel their drive; lower classes use concrete

Did anyone else see this article about upper and lower classes last weekend in The Daily Mail?

It says things like, ‘Upper classes wear clothes that are out of fashion; lower classes wear clothes that are in fashion’ and ‘upper classes go horse riding on holiday; lower classes do binge-drinking and get sunburned’.

Was it an April Fool?

It’s just that I now keep doing it in my head: ‘Upper classes draw water from a well; lower classes use a tap’ … ‘Upper classes drink Pepsi; lower class people drink Coca Cola’ etc.

So, please enlighten me: was it an April Fool? Because it really can’t have been for real … and what are yours (lighthearted)? (Upper classes do x; lower classes do y) …

I'm prepared to believe that hoggin might be posh, but pea-shingle isn't.

the daily wail is just a silly article to appeal to Hyancinth Bucket.

"oh and PS concrete drives are not allowed now, private drives and paved parking has to be water permeable"
"Someone needs to tell Detlev Pilitz. Do you think he is on mumsnet?"

It would have been a more accurate article if he was Grin

The reason UC have gravel drives is that they are too long to do anything else with (unless you’re a Duke). Wells are because you can’t get mains water out of the middle of a village.

Culture
Upper classes: Van Gogh; lower classes: Van Outen

Nicky Haslam has a much better list Grin.

LaTomatina · 05/04/2022 20:47

*Changechangychange

Anyway, don’t the truly posh live up a mud track, accessible only by their 30 year old Volvo?*

That's what I thought too...

Spearpeas · 05/04/2022 20:49

I agree.

But this one is so random. It wouldn’t resonate with anyone.

Will nobody play my game..? 😬

Viscounts:
Upper classes: somebody’s title
Lower classes: a minty biscuit …

I have an enormous gravel drive

WaltzedIntoIt · 05/04/2022 20:51

I saw this and if anything it made me think why would you want to be upper class.

Upper class: crap car, old worn interiors and ramshackle house, old fashioned clothes

Lower class: nice new car, nicely decorated and furnished house, fashionable clothes.

Am I missing something? Why would anyone enjoy living in a draughty old house with a crap car and horrible clothes! 😂

Bikesbikesbikes · 05/04/2022 20:52

I live up a rough, unadopted track with a tarmac drive accessed with a stealth campervan Grin We're so close to the river, cement would shift and gravel wash away regularly. Hoggin makes hell of a mess when wet.

I ride bikes on holiday and hate sunbathing. We use regular tap water, but have private sewerage .

Definitely not upper class Grin

"Fordian
I have resin.

Deal with that....

😂😂😂

Environmental unaware peasant

actually no....it bonds the gravel together so it doesn't shift or tread in but still leaved gaps so its permeable.....its wannabe because you dont need to direct one of the estate workers to respread the gravel and fill in the potholes :)

nearlyspringyay · 05/04/2022 20:53

Gravel drives are basically a fox / dog / cat public toilet. Anyone who has one is daft.

Doesn't it have to be hosed down/jet washed to keep it clean?

Then it's just an extension or those who have very clean cars verses the upper class who don't wash their cars (I mean - my car gets washed once a year when it gets serviced Smile)

FAQs · 05/04/2022 21:03

I can’t see a reference to drives in the article but I do tick almost all the upper class boxes, Originally I’m from a rough estate in South London, parents still in a council flat, don’t think it counts 🤣

According to that latest load of utter bilge, I'm near enough landed gentry.

why any more than any other drive material? and yes my car gets washed annually too.....or more frequently if it rains Grin

oh and blue roses are NOT classy

Yes that confused me. Blue roses have to be dyed. They are the very opposite of posh
ivykaty44 · 05/04/2022 21:11

I don’t even have a drive, what class does that make me? grin

I have one drive pressed concrete and the second drive, which is alongside the side of the house is gravel...? Is it a social confusion? upper class with working class aspirations on the side?

NippyWoowoo · 05/04/2022 21:19

‘Upper classes draw water from a well; lower classes use a tap’

This finished me

this one turns blue as it ages

and you can also get one called blue moon but its not very disease resistant.

SilverOtter · 05/04/2022 21:22

I shall smugly inform my husband that the state of my car means I'm a cut above - he's been ribbing me about it for weeks😂

CallMeMousie · 05/04/2022 21:22

Blue roses???? Ay'm sure they are quite the thing for the country set. Ay must ask Phillips the gardener to rip up all those zinnias and replace them with a beautiful bank of blue roses right away.

Fordian · 05/04/2022 21:29

My resin drive?

I'll get a peasant to lick it clean.

Pressure washers are so passé.
