What is the closest chocolate to (the old) Dairy Milk?

It's just not the same any more, and hardly surprising considering what has happened to the Cadbury company over the last decade.

Dairy Milk used to be my favourite! I'm in the search for something as close to it as possible. Any ideas?

Tony’s Chocolonely maybe? It’s good stuff

AlternativelyWired · 03/04/2022 11:15

Love cocoa

EatSleepRantRepeat · 03/04/2022 12:12

I agree with @RedRobin100 - Tony's Chocolonely is a hit of nostalgia for me because it tastes like the old Dairy Milk.

Divine chocolate. Palm oil free and fair trade too. It's so, so nice.

I completely refute this, it tastes the same as kinnerton to me.

There’s nothing wrong with kinnerton, when you’re paying kinnerton prices. But for £3.50 a bar I expect much much more!

Aspiringmatriarch · 03/04/2022 13:29

Green and Black's? Not sure if it's the same but they do a lovely creamy milk chocolate.

Heronatemygoldfish · 03/04/2022 13:30

Love Cocoa for sure, given it's made by a Cadbury. Very expensive though, and I used to get it for my Dad on subscription and often he got the wrong flavours despite me only ever asking for normal milk chocolate.

BonnesVacances · 03/04/2022 13:34

I find Aldi milk chocolate comes quite close

Newyearnewme2022 · 03/04/2022 13:47

If you buy the massive bar of Dairy Milk it tastes just like old Dairy Milk, chunky squares that melt in your mouth. The little multi pack bars taste of plastic.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 03/04/2022 13:50

Second Aldi's. Tastes great.

IMO none of the suggestions upthread taste anything like proper Cadbury chocolate.

Another vote for this, it's about the 200g big bar I think, but just make sure you get one with proper square chunks and it's so much better. I also think the Cadbury Easter eggs taste better than the small 90g bars.
hamsterchump · 03/04/2022 14:03

I haven't tried Tony's Chocolonely because the price has put me off (don't think I'll bother now) but I find loads of even expensive brands taste like Kinnerton cheap advent calendar chocolate. We're just now finishing a Hotel Chocolat milk chocolate advent calendar that someone gave us and that's only because it's a last resort as there's nothing else left in the house. God knows how much that cost and it tastes exactly like a cheap Paw Patrol or whatever advent calendar, somehow both waxy and too hard and not much flavour at all.

skipperjonce · 03/04/2022 14:11

Tony's does not taste anything like old Cadburys! Not even slightly. It is tasteless powdery shite.

I found the larger bars of the Cadbury marvellous creations have the 'good' taste and texture, but of course they are loaded with jelly beans and fizzy bits which kinda ruins the purity.

Sadly, I think we'll never see the likes of old dairy milk again.

I agree with that, Divine is divine.

Sainsbury's own brand is pretty close too.

Second Aldi's. Tastes great.

I was going to suggest Aldis chocolate, 'it's lovely.

Straussful · 03/04/2022 14:21

If I'm making anything chocolate like krispie buns, chocolate sauce or mousse I use half 85% and half Aldi milk chocolate. It gives a deep chocolatey hit without the austere flavour of just dark chocolate.

AlternativelyWired · 03/04/2022 14:43

James Cadbury at Love Cocoa told me a few years ago now that he was on a mission to get as close to his great great great grandfathers recipe as possible. Sadly the original recipe is held secret by the bastards who now own Cadbury but his chocolate is lovely

MrsHugget · 03/04/2022 14:45

I loved my first sea salt caramel Tony's then realised it was the chumminess I liked.
I'll have to try the large bars when Lent is done

MrsGHarrison87 · 03/04/2022 14:49

Closest thing is the new Dairy Milk. There are better quality chocolate out there now but none that taste like Cadburys. They use good and bad quality for different things. I noticed the Freddo bars in the multipacks and individually sold are much nicer than ones I had in a selection box over Christmas. Same goes for nearly all bars. The larger easter eggs last year were crap, the smaller ones were good. If you look, the ingredients are different.

Tanaqui · 03/04/2022 14:52

Karl Fraser (Finnish brand) has that milky taste that reminds me of old Cadbury, if you can get it anywhere!

PierresPotato · 03/04/2022 14:53

I like Aldi milk chocolate too.

PuppyMonkey · 03/04/2022 14:57

Tony's Chcocolonely does nothing for me, I'd prefer to eat the current Cadbury's any day - but I agree it's nothing like as good as the old days.

Also love Aldi choc as PPs have said, the big bar of Choceur in the red box, yum.

Yep what they said, definitely the best old school chocolate taste
StellaAndCrow · 03/04/2022 15:18

I think Twirls taste like they're still made of the original cadbury's. And Aeros are a bit like it.
