What is the closest chocolate to (the old) Dairy Milk?

It's just not the same any more, and hardly surprising considering what has happened to the Cadbury company over the last decade.

Dairy Milk used to be my favourite! I'm in the search for something as close to it as possible. Any ideas?

100% Love Cocoa, it’s the best.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 03/04/2022 15:33

I'm not sure it's all to do with the taste. I think it's partly a texture thing as well —most of the Swiss-type chocolates are too smooth.

I can't get the hype over Tony's. it tastes like cheap stuff to me

Kinnerton makes a lot of M&S's chocolate range (they certainly did do very recently at least, I assume they still do), so they're not the cheap crap some people think they are.

I like Tony's, it's definitely more chocolatey and less waxy than Dairy Milk.

passportpanics · 03/04/2022 15:42

I go for Ritter. It’s more similar to old galaxy than old Dairy Milk really, but still vastly superior to both now. It actually has cocoa butter in it, rather than oil!

4intheCorner · 03/04/2022 15:57

Cadbury Dark Milk is lovely. Other than that Flakes and Twirls are the nearest as they don't contain palm oil. Something to do with palm oil interfering with the flakey effect.

Wbeezer · 03/04/2022 16:03

I like Aldi Choceur but not the cheaper Dairyfine.

Andoffwego · 03/04/2022 16:07

If you order Dairy Milk from Ireland from EBay it’s the old recipe. Or at least it used to be up to 2.5 years ago - I haven’t ordered any since then so I can’t say for definite now.

Thank m pretty sure all Twirls are made to the old recipe too.

purpleme12 · 03/04/2022 16:10

I don't understand how people can say Tony chocoloney tastes like it
I bought it after seeing comments here and it tasted nothing like it and tasted awful
Dairy milk is still the closest thing to the old version.
Agree with comments here saying dairy milk chocolate in an Easter egg has tasted better in the past
And freddos too

Cookerhood · 03/04/2022 16:13

Came on to say Irish dairy milk. I ordered some from Amazon last year for DD's birthday

Cookerhood · 03/04/2022 16:13

It has a lower melting point than new cadburys.

Seasidemumma77 · 03/04/2022 16:15

Aldi

LaurieFairyCake · 03/04/2022 16:17

The James Cadbury Love Cocoa stuff is delicious but NOTHING like the old dairy milk

For a start it's a thin posh bar of chocolate - the old dairy milk is big chunks that your teeth sink through

I've tried every bar out there and nothing comes close

None of it tastes like creamy milk

Sisisimone · 03/04/2022 16:18

@StellaAndCrow

I think Twirls taste like they're still made of the original cadbury's. And Aeros are a bit like it.
I read somewhere that Twirls are the only Cadbury chocolate bar made with the original recipe. That they couldn't change the recipe because of the way Twirls are made. They definitely taste much nicer than other Cadbury bars.
LaurieFairyCake · 03/04/2022 16:18

Aldi chocolate is horrid (as is Lidls and Tonys)

Just awful

Sapphirejane · 03/04/2022 16:21

I like the Aldi Moser Roth, not the other two they do. I love the little bars it comes in inside the cardboard box, perfect size for a little pick me up in the afternoon.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/04/2022 16:27

@Newyearnewme2022

If you buy the massive bar of Dairy Milk it tastes just like old Dairy Milk, chunky squares that melt in your mouth. The little multi pack bars taste of plastic.
I agree, and I have done extensive research on the subject Grin Buttons taste good too.

I really like Aldi and Lidl chocolate. Lindt is the best but for "cheap" chocolate, Lidl and Aldi are good.

Haven't had Tony's.

SummerOfComedy · 03/04/2022 16:32

Mackies of Scotland milk chocolate. The same people who make ice cream.

Really nice. Used to be sold by lidl but haven't seen it there for a while.

countrygirl99 · 03/04/2022 16:33

@Tanaqui

Karl Fraser (Finnish brand) has that milky taste that reminds me of old Cadbury, if you can get it anywhere!
Fazer. Now you've hond dnd hot enough craving Dumle
passportpanics · 03/04/2022 16:34

Controversial opinion, but I’d rather new Dairy Milk than Lindt 🤢

ouch321 · 03/04/2022 16:36

Are the ingredients different between the 40g and 200g bars? Otherwise don't you think it might just be psychological..

ouch321 · 03/04/2022 16:37

Sorry that was meant to be asking the previous posters about Dairy Milk

Eyedropeyeflop · 03/04/2022 16:45

Aldi milk chocolate is really nice.

PuppyMonkey · 03/04/2022 16:45

I very much agree with PP about it being to do with texture as well as taste. Those old bars of Cadbury’s from the 70s were hard not smooth - you struggled to break the squares off and then the taste was utterly wonderful, not like horrid smooth silky slimy modern chocolate but deep and hard and delicious.

Ooh er, I think I might need to go and have a lie down.Grin
