What is the closest chocolate to (the old) Dairy Milk?

It's just not the same any more, and hardly surprising considering what has happened to the Cadbury company over the last decade.

Dairy Milk used to be my favourite! I'm in the search for something as close to it as possible. Any ideas?

Lidl’s own brand taste lovely. Like cadburys used to taste——but better

Hollyhobbi · 04/04/2022 02:55

Butlers chocolate bars, Lily O'Briens bars or Roisins chocolate bars. All made in Ireland. And delicious.. Roisins is sold in Aldi here.

Green and Black's.

DobbyTheHouseElk that's disappointing to hear but thank you for posting. I won't waste my money on it!

Irish dairy milk has now changed recipe too. It's not the good stuff anymore. I dislike Tony's too, Divine is nice but havent seen it in Ireland.
We eat Toblerone or milka now.

MoodySky · 04/04/2022 14:48

Milka is my favourite these days. Usually very cheap in B&M, Home Bargains etc.

schroeder · 04/04/2022 15:14

I love tonychocoloney. But most of the time I just go for freddos.

AliasGrape · 04/04/2022 15:19

The Cadbury’s darkmilk tastes a bit like the old dairy milk IMO

NotEnoughTeaYet · 04/04/2022 15:23

I've slowly realised I don't like Tony's as much as I want to. It's really not all that.

YY to the thickness of chocolate being a factor. I like Lindt but find the thinness of the squares not as satisfying as the Dairy Milk chunks of old. Waitrose No1 milk chocolate, however, is slightly thicker than the standard 'premium thin square' which makes it feel... a little more luxurious somehow.

Aldi's milk chocolate, 5 little bars in the blue pack, about £1.80 ish I think. Really very nice indeed, Their other bars in this range (moser roth ) like dark mint, dark chilli choc etc are all good.

@OldEnoughandUglyEnough

These theories that twirls/flakes/larger bars of Dairy Milk taste more like the old recipe are very interesting. I’ve had a look at the listed ingredients on the Sainsbury’s app and they all appear to have the exact same ingredients, in the same order, I don’t have any bars to hand though to compare. I’m a fan of Tony’s and the ingredients list for that is much shorter with less crap, but a lot of it is also the chunky size and texture
Yes, I've just checked too. Also the Irish CDM appears to have exactly the same ingredients, including shea and palm oil. Suspect some of it is psychological, to do with shape and size of the chocolate.
ThomasinaGallico · 04/04/2022 16:06

Shea butter? I thought that belonged in cosmetics!

Loginmystery · 04/04/2022 16:09

So much hype about the Tonys. I’ve bought every bar expecting to find something fantastic. They’re so bland I’ve even left them to go off in the fridge. A celeb was saying how wonderful they were so I fell for it. Lovely packaging but that’s it.

Lysianthus · 04/04/2022 16:15

Has anyone mentioned the "it's not for girls" bar? The name completely escapes me but it shows how great their marketing was Wink and I love the regular milk, and the raisin one.

MadameFantabulosa · 04/04/2022 16:35

Droste chocolate is good.

That'll be a Yorkie Big rich and thick The milk chocolate brick...
Jaggerdagger · 04/04/2022 22:51

Do they still make Yorkie bars?

@SummerOfComedy

Mackies of Scotland milk chocolate. The same people who make ice cream.

Really nice. Used to be sold by lidl but haven't seen it there for a while.

I've just bought a bar of Mackies orange chocolate on the back of your recommendation (at Aldi, no milk so went for that instead). Oh my god, it's lovely, thank you! And no palm oil in sight.
ElenaSt · 07/04/2022 00:22

I buy Callebaut Belgian milk chocolate (823) and Callebaut dark chocolate (811) which are chocolate callets but eat a few as I would eat a small packet of chocolate buttons.

SpringsSprung · 07/04/2022 00:41

Dairy Milk 30% less sugar - just trust me!!! It's beautiful!

Lookingoutside · 07/04/2022 00:57

Twirl and flake still taste like Cadbury’s used to. Second the big bars and the Easter eggs too.

Rodion · 07/04/2022 01:38

I like Lindt but only the giant gold-wrapped bar so that it's thick and chunky. No time for the thin lindt bars.

Nat6999 · 07/04/2022 02:41

I've swapped to Milky bar, I know it is white chocolate but you can't taste the palm oil like you can in Cadbury's, this is someone who used to mainline Cadbury's Milky Bar.

kateandme · 07/04/2022 02:45

Easter eggs seem to taste better

Came on to say this- it’s the closest I’ve tasted to old DM. I really don’t get the Tony’s hype at all, tastes like cheap advent calendar chocolate. Alongside insomnia, I’m now craving proper chocolate of my childhood (even white chocolate tasted better then too, but some horrid ones around now).
