If you live in York and like buns...

...can you answer a couple of questions for me?

  1. Does Thomas the Baker still sell Chelsea buns?
  2. How much do they cost?

As a York student in the mid-90s, a Thomas' Chelsea bun was the size of your face and a bargain (if not especially nutritious) lunch. They were 31p; I remember thinking that inflation had gone wildly out of control when they went up to 32p.

I used to live in York and I used to buy them for my kids
I seem to remember them being around the 80p/£1 mark so it was a rare treat
I left about 6 years ago so they might have stopped making them now

EscapeTheCastle · 02/04/2022 16:13

I would like to know too. Buns of York of Yesteryear!

I do love a fat rascal myself.

EatsQuorn · 02/04/2022 16:16

@EscapeTheCastle
I don't get the love for Fat Rascals. I've tried Betty tearoom ones , and assumed they would be good. Tbh reminded me of a slightly flattened scone.

Blossomtoes · 02/04/2022 16:18

Oh God, now I want a Fat Rascal. And I’d have to travel about 150 miles to get one. Damn you @EscapeTheCastle!

www.thomasthebaker.co.uk/pies-and-pastries.html They've even got t' Internet there now Wink

Inesyoucantbelieveawordshesays · 02/04/2022 16:19

Yes, I always felt the Fat Rascal promised more than it delivered too.

I'm not limited to bun nostalgia, to be honest. There was a Chinese takeaway on Bishopthorpe Road that did a pancake roll the size of a baby's thigh, stuffed full of beansprouts and prawns and char sui pork - £1.10 and you didn't need anything else.

Ah... I did find this online but didn't scroll down far enough to find the part about the Chelsea bun!

I walked past a Thomas the Baker this morning and was staring hungrily at the Chelsea Buns (but didn’t get one). I think they’re £1.10ish. And looked delicious, but very sweet.

Blossomtoes · 02/04/2022 16:29

Seriously? I love you @sarah12398! Off to Betty’s website ..

We do a lot of work for Bettys and the lads love the fact that they get fed when they're there.. plus free cakes at the end of the day.

Yes Thomas the Baker still do huge Chelsea buns! I think they do a chocolate orange one too.. 😋

EscapeTheCastle · 02/04/2022 16:32

Fat Rascals are very easy to make.

Half of you love them and half of you are underwhelmed by them. Ungrateful fools!

For those of you who love them and can't get to Bettys, here's the recipe I use.

Used to live in York as well. Mid 90’s for me. Loved on Heworth Green. Flat in one of the huge Georgian terraces. Ten minute walk do that to the bar wall.
Used to work at the insurance place by Kendal bridge until I went to work in an office on Clifton moor.
Missed my lunch breaks of wondering around the centre and cheap lunches from bakeries and cafes. Although flex Friday where we stopped work at 2 pm and went to the flying legends were fab.

The Rainbow? Don't think it's open anymore, but not 100% sure. Not been shopping on Bishy Road for a while, but drive past it on my way to work and it's got a lovely community feel. Lots of independent shops, bunting up, has a "Notting Hill" vibe!

This is making me so nostalgic for my York days. My three years there were so happy. I bet the daffodils on the walls look amazing right now.

They do!

Clifford's Tower just been rejuvenated too. I remember my (now grown up) boys rolling down the hill in cricket whites.. not sure whether I was more worried about the grass stains or the embarrassment of them taking out the daffodils 🙄

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 02/04/2022 16:46

My in laws still live in York. We moved down south for work. It’s not quite the same. Unless it’s had a refit in the last two years.

Thomas' cheese straws used to be the best and their curd tarts were great too! I grew up in York and used to love a Thomas' picnic in the museum gardens.

I used to live near Thomas the Baker’s second-day shop, in Tang Hall. It was fantastic for students and other people on a tight budget. Bargains galore!

Yes - The Rainbow 🌈 Oh my goodness, I would never have remembered that!!

We used to live on Scarcroft Road - loved the pubs along the King's Staith... was it the Lowther down there?

Chocolate orange Chelsea buns sound like a dream come true.

And thank you @AtomicBlondeRose for sorting out the price point question Smile

Going up fo a few days later this month and ridiculously excited!

Easy to make yourself. My dh made some recently and having tried both his and betty's I think his were better.
