If you live in York and like buns...

...can you answer a couple of questions for me?

  1. Does Thomas the Baker still sell Chelsea buns?
  2. How much do they cost?

As a York student in the mid-90s, a Thomas' Chelsea bun was the size of your face and a bargain (if not especially nutritious) lunch. They were 31p; I remember thinking that inflation had gone wildly out of control when they went up to 32p.

@UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter

Used to live in York as well. Mid 90’s for me. Loved on Heworth Green. Flat in one of the huge Georgian terraces. Ten minute walk do that to the bar wall. Used to work at the insurance place by Kendal bridge until I went to work in an office on Clifton moor. Missed my lunch breaks of wondering around the centre and cheap lunches from bakeries and cafes. Although flex Friday where we stopped work at 2 pm and went to the flying legends were fab.
My partner grew up in one of those houses. His parents still live there! Lovely but freezing!

I grew up in York and was there two weeks ago for work. I ate rather too many bakery products from Thomas's than I ought to have, including a chelsea bun, quite a few cheese straws and a couple of curd tarts. (This was over the course of several days, I hasten to add). Thomas's are the best!

And we used to go underage drinking in the Lowther.

I was disappointed to see that the Willow (Chinese restaurant that turned into a cheesy disco) is no longer there Sad

Anyone know what happened to that nightclub at the end of Micklegate that was converted from a car showroom?

Top or bottom of Micklegate?

I don't get the love for Fat Rascals. I've tried Betty tearoom ones , and assumed they would be good. Tbh reminded me of a slightly flattened scone.[/quote]
Have you tried the gooey rascals though. They are amazing!

Bar end @SpikyHatePotato.

I'd love to help on the Micklegate nightclub front but don't think I could actually navigate anywhere sober.

We used to go to Ziggy's on a Wednesday night (what a health and safety shitshow that was... would be horrified at the thought of my own DC in there now) and we also used to go to Toff's on Toft Green on a Tuesday night. At one point around 1996, you could buy Decoda (a sort of off-brand Hooch / 2Dogs) for 50p a bottle, which was how many a student story began!

Was the car showroom nightclub the one that used to play more dancey / housey tunes rather than the standard student indie soundtrack?

If so, I was too uncool to be allowed in there.

It may have gone by your time @Inesyoucantbelieveawordshesays. I was there 83-86. I remember Ziggys well.

The chocolate orange ones are lush (I work in York) I swear going into the office is getting expensive due to the cakes! Perky peacock have some good ones as do Brew and Brownie, we now have Krispy Kreme too.
The daffs do look beautiful.
@UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter Did you work in Wellington Row or Yorkshire house? Yorkshire house is now a swish hotel and Aviva no longer use the out of city centre offices.

PickAChew · 02/04/2022 19:13

I wish Thomas the Baker would come further north than Darlington. We basically have Greggs on every corner and the odd Cooplands.

Could it be Forsselius' garage, Blossomtoes? It was at the end of Blossom Street, between the Odeon and Micklegate Bar. It was Brubaker's for a while, and is now part of the Premier Inn.
