Fighter jets constant noise tonight

Live Northernish England. Anyone know what’s going on? Is there a night exercise? Sounds like we have been at an air show for the last hour. Looked on flightradar24 and can only see one Typhoon but there’s more out there surely?

@Workinghardeveryday

I am panicking. What does it mean? Are we going to get bombed? !

Don't panic. We have fighter jets doing exercises near me all the time. They're training.

gogohm · 29/03/2022 21:54

@SilverHairedCat

We have monthly siren tests here (chemical leakage rather than warmongering reasons ) and it scares new people, add the chinooks flying low plus assorted other helicopters and it sounds like a war zone

Longdistance · 29/03/2022 21:55

There’s a plane between Cambridge and Peterborough on my plane finder and it just says XXXX

Without wishing to sound unkind, other people are in danger, you're not, so think about them instead of yourself.
BoodleBug51 · 29/03/2022 21:56

We're on a route around RAF Brize Norton and even though we've lived here 25 years or so, it still freaks me out when they fly at night. Sometimes it makes the glass in the windows shake and the dogs go mental.

SofiaSoFar · 29/03/2022 22:02

A USAF Osprey is heading from Mildenhall to Harrogate right now if anyone is enroute and wants to see something quite spectacular.

Also a USAF B52 is heading back to Fairford at the moment.

They are on exercise. Touch downs and take offs. Info from military personnel who are in the know.

thats the osprey from mildenhall
SofiaSoFar · 29/03/2022 22:07

@BoodleBug51

Could be the Osprey? It's around that area.

There's a lot going on tonight - I can also see a super Hercules flying very odd patterns east of Nottingham right now,

Do you think the police pilot is dizzy yet?

Plus... is this just burning duel for landing?

Why are you panicking?

A few air bases there.. at least 3 I can think of.
notimagain · 29/03/2022 22:10

I won't use the official term - sorties - because it sounds naff and stuffy

Hmm.

For historic reasons lots of aviation vocabulary originated in France.

On the basis “if it’s not broke why replace it” if you get involved in aviation you’ll still hear words (or is it banter Wink) thrown around like aileron, longeron and sortie. Even the word hangar, as in aircraft hangar, is French in origin.

theton · 29/03/2022 22:13

yes!

yes!

Unhelpful response to someone’s anxiety, did it make you feel good?
theton · 29/03/2022 22:17

Yes it did actually, it lessened my anxiety!

willowstar · 29/03/2022 22:18

I live near an airbase and we find it thrilling to hear and see the planes and helicopters on a very regular basis, I often have to mute myself if working from home and on teams meetings, but i spare a thought for people who hear them in a very different context when they are actually on operations...must be terrifying. We have had a lot of helicopters the last couple of days but no more planes than normal. We are in Norfolk.

theton · 29/03/2022 22:18

I thought it was a very unhelpful post

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 29/03/2022 22:19

Conningsby (home of one lot of typhoon) are night flying tonight. DH on nights Wink

Thanks everyone
TheRealHousewife can you get your mate to tell them to pipe down now. My teenager has gone from mildly alarmed to moaning about going to sleep!
Interestingly I went on the other tracker site mentioned here and they weren’t on it either (at least 2 swooping past - quite low). The US military planes were on there though.

The call sign (?) of the Typhoon flying out from Lincolnshire sounds a bit apocalyptic

Workinghardeveryday · 29/03/2022 22:26

Just worried for a while really, so suppose I am on high alert.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/03/2022 22:28

Have osprey and typhoon disappeared from everyone's or is mine being silly? Osprey looked to be heading back to Mildenhall when I lost it
