Live Northernish England. Anyone know what’s going on? Is there a night exercise? Sounds like we have been at an air show for the last hour. Looked on flightradar24 and can only see one Typhoon but there’s more out there surely?

We used to have a B&B near RAF Odiham and one night exercise involved dropping personnel in the field behind us (who then had to make their way back to base). We had a notice in all the rooms as it would freak the guests out if they heard and saw it.

(From low flying and very loud Chinooks)

SirGawain · 29/03/2022 22:32

RAF Conniningsby announced a few days ago the they would be exercising. I am visiting Northwest England at the moment and heard them flying around this afternoon. (Could not see anything due to low cloud). Routine training not directly related to the Ukraine situation, but of course relevant long term.

Vicliz24 · 29/03/2022 22:33

Very very loud here on the Notts Lincs border . My dog is petrified

Blogblogblogblog · 29/03/2022 22:33

I was following one military plane earlier trying to work out if it could be the culprit and the ‘route’ disappeared. They have obviously been tipped off that mumsnetters are on to them Grin

I'm at Coningsby, all quiet here now.

SilverHairedCat · 29/03/2022 22:38

Military aircraft can turn their transponders off for operational reasons, unlike commercial aircrafts.

Idontevenknow · 29/03/2022 22:39

Are you near Coningsby? they are doing extra training using typhoons for the next 2/3 weeks

Chakraleaf · 29/03/2022 22:41

I never forget walking kids to school and hearing a sonic boom from jets

LilyRed · 29/03/2022 22:45

This might be of help - details the UK Low Flying Areas (LFAs) and exercises going on.

www.gov.uk/low-flying-in-your-area/where-and-when-low-flying-happens

You can also have a look at the website of the AirBase for the current exercises - so for example RAF Coningsby
www.raf.mod.uk/our-organisation/stations/raf-coningsby/flying-info/

Used to live near Scampton in a LFA
PLEASE DO NOT BE AFRAID! these are necessary defence exercises and the UK carries them out every year.

theton · 29/03/2022 22:45

I heard a sonic boom, it was freaky.

TheRealHousewife · 29/03/2022 23:19

@Blogblogblogblog

Thanks everyone TheRealHousewife can you get your mate to tell them to pipe down now. My teenager has gone from mildly alarmed to moaning about going to sleep! Interestingly I went on the other tracker site mentioned here and they weren’t on it either (at least 2 swooping past - quite low). The US military planes were on there though.
They have been or will be doing parachute 🪂 drops too …. Which house is yours? I’ll tell them to swerve 😬
VampireMoney · 29/03/2022 23:26

Noisy last night and tonight too. I'm in Yorkshire. We had quite a few last week too. I think it was a sonic boom I heard last night, terrified the dogs and at first I thought it was a collision outside but I'm assuming now it was probably the boom.

N00tN00t · 29/03/2022 23:58

I live near a USAF base, saw something on FB earlier about Biden landing here last night. Could be something to do with that?

TheFairyCaravan · 30/03/2022 00:17

It’s really easy to find out what’s going on instead of panicking. The RAF do release the dates of when they’re going to be doing night flying. We had it near here for 3 nights last week.

They can’t do their jobs if they don’t practice.

@notimagain

I won't use the official term - sorties - because it sounds naff and stuffy

Hmm.

For historic reasons lots of aviation vocabulary originated in France.

On the basis “if it’s not broke why replace it” if you get involved in aviation you’ll still hear words (or is it banter Wink) thrown around like aileron, longeron and sortie. Even the word hangar, as in aircraft hangar, is French in origin.

I just cringe whenever I hear the word. I can't help feeling it sounds affected, even though it's the proper term for an outing from base.
