How hot is the coffee in police stations and other odd questions

I'm watching a programme where a suspect is being interviewed at a police station and they ask him if he wants a coffee.

It got me wondering if the coffee in police stations is always a bit tepid and never boiling hot (therefore tasting a bit shit) in case it gets thrown at a police officer.

Any police officers care to enlighten me?

Also what other pointless questions do you have?

Yes I know Google is a thing. I like a bit of chat.

On a similar vein, in films, tv programmers etc why do they have empty cups? Why not fill them with water or something with a similar weight as to me it’s very noticeable.

Holding something virtually weightless looks different.

buddhasbelly · 29/03/2022 11:52

Yes! Or phones clearly showing they're on lock/ not on when actor is supposed to be making a call. Why do they do this?!

Love this. I have plenty of stupid questions I'll be back with later

Lotsobeary · 29/03/2022 11:56

Detainees coffee is generally warm but not hot. So it won't burn if it gets throw... You do get got at avoiding flying projectiles if you work in custody. And you learn to open the cell hatch by standing to the side just in case something gets thrown through there.

Lotsobeary · 29/03/2022 11:57

*good at (not got!)

IstillMissHim · 29/03/2022 11:59

It’s really hot !! It surprised me actually

I had been arrested after slapping someone who made fun of my disabled dc and said it was a good thing I’d just had a mc in case ‘it’ was the same

I got given a boiling coffee and biscuits I’m the cell, door opened and it was handed to me (the police officer was actually really kind to me) and I did wonder at the time if they make a judgement who they can just open the door to and hand boiling liquid to

I've worked in custody as a civilian Detention Officer for a number of years, I always put a dash of cold water in hot drinks so they're not boiling. You risk assess everyone that you deal with, but you can never know someone's intentions. I have had several drinks thrown at me over the years, luckily they've not been hot drinks.

Ohjustboreoff · 29/03/2022 12:27

A family member is a Police Officer. Yes the hot drinks are hot, made with water boiled in a kettle for staff or water heater for the erm clientele.
If you pass the attitude test you get a lovely hot cuppa or if you're a bit of a weapon you only get cold drinks like squash or water.
On interview no hot drinks as some try and throw them on the officers.

GastroNuisance · 29/03/2022 12:44

I wonder about stuff like this too. Thanks for the answers so far!

Bilingualspingual · 29/03/2022 12:49

Re actors' cups, if you're sitting in a scene with a cup of tea in front of you, the props people will make real hot tea (so the steam is visible) and ask if you take milk. Often when you're walking around with a takeaway coffee they'll not bother and that's when the viewer notices - you have to ask for it to be filled.

ToPlayOrNotToPlay · 29/03/2022 12:52

I wonder about the plastic stuff in swimming costumes. Is someone supposed to wipe it down? Obviously you only try swimwear on over your underwear, however if someone hasn't how does that piece of plastic make it more hygienic? always makes me feel really ick

StrawberrySanta · 29/03/2022 12:57

I've been wondering, how does a walking stick for a blind person work? From what I can see, they hold the stick slightly above the floor so they can feel if the floor has the bumps on indicating a road edge. Is that right?

AiryFairy1 · 29/03/2022 12:59

I was thinking the same @ToPlayOrNotToPlay

My recent pondering (having returned several clothing items) is do the people on the receiving end repackage the items so they’re all nicely folded again in unripped bags? I always try and refold clothes to look the same, but invariably the package is lumpy doesn’t look brand new any more!

TheIsaacs · 29/03/2022 13:01

I always wonder if crabs think everyone else walks sideways?

Mochudubh · 29/03/2022 13:07

Not sure if this is the same thing but why do actors never move their hair out of the way when they answer the phone? They just pick up and listen through a veil of hair.

Maybe it's me who's weird by putting the phone behind my hair and against my actual ear.

PollyPutTheKettleOnKettleOn · 29/03/2022 13:08

Suitcases.

In films and on TV they're are clearly always empty! No one ever hefts or oofs them!

Also how can people go away to start a new life or go on a long holiday with just one small easy to carry suitcase?!

buddhasbelly · 29/03/2022 14:10

Thank you for all tthe answers to my cuppa in a police station query! I feel I shall sleep better tonight knowing the answer to this Grin not that I was planning on having to test it out any time soon!

Do hairdressers do each others hair at the salon (say after work) or do something hey do their own? When do they do it (day off, after shift, lunch break)? Do they have to pay?

Lorry drivers - you can get mini fridges that plug into cars so why don't they use those for meals etc instead of buying fast food?

Calandor · 29/03/2022 14:13

Or do they do their own*

Sewaccidentprone · 29/03/2022 14:15

Massive explosion, main character get blown to the ground. Gets up, dusts themself off and moves off AS THOUGH NOTHING HAD JUST HAPPENED TO THEM….

Ditto big fight, hit by car, fall off building etc.

So unrealistic.

Saw a programme where one of the characters had to carry a glowing red hot metal bar in their hands. Sure their hands looked a bit red and blistered after, but in the real world surely there’d be more damage than that???

Sewaccidentprone · 29/03/2022 14:17

Do beauty therapists wax their own legs?

Jongy · 29/03/2022 14:20

Sitting here and suddenly two flies appear.

Haven’t seen a fly since the end of last summer.

Where do the bastards go to during winter?

HoldingTheDoor · 29/03/2022 14:21

StrawberrySanta

There's a video here that explains how the canes are used.

deplorabelle · 29/03/2022 14:23

Some blind people use a white stick as you describe @StrawberrySanta. Some people have a plastic rollerball on the end of the cane to let it glide along the ground.

Or they may use a "symbol cane" which is a lightweight white stick which is just there to warn sighted people that this person can't see (or see as well). A symbol cane is much shorter to keep it out of the way of the ground, as the person doesn't want to get it caught on anything (they either have enough sight / knowledge of their surroundings they don't need a cane or they are being guided)
