How hot is the coffee in police stations and other odd questions

buddhasbelly · 29/03/2022 11:32

I'm watching a programme where a suspect is being interviewed at a police station and they ask him if he wants a coffee.

It got me wondering if the coffee in police stations is always a bit tepid and never boiling hot (therefore tasting a bit shit) in case it gets thrown at a police officer.

Any police officers care to enlighten me?

Also what other pointless questions do you have?

Yes I know Google is a thing. I like a bit of chat.

Ooh ooh, I know how to offend Robins! If they're singing their little shouty song at you, whistle your own little tune back at them. This is evidently a Massive Diss in robin world, as they then go all bashful and try to hide in the hedge 😆

I would like to know if it's true that doctors can cure their own hangovers with a saline drip? Anyone done this in their junior house days?

Right, I need to go and diss/confuse a robin Grin

Who invented knitting ?
Dunno.

But all across Northern Europe, Roman dodecahedra have been found.

Many theories exist, but one guy reckons they were for gloves.

The Egyptians and Mayans have also left behind knitted socks.

@crackofdoom and @DameHelena, what'll wind 'em up even more is playing them a recording of robin song on your phone. They'll probably come for a closer look, and you might get to see the head feathers puff up mightilyGrin

Thank you.

Do hairdressers do each others hair at the salon (say after work) or do something hey do their own? When do they do it (day off, after shift, lunch break)? Do they have to pay?

Lorry drivers - you can get mini fridges that plug into cars so why don't they use those for meals etc instead of buying fast food?

Hairstylist here I can answer this! Depends entirely on the salon setup, if all self employed then do each others hair with each persons own products so it’s free, if all employed by the salon then sometimes it’s free as a perk towards offsetting the absolutely dire working culture and pay, sometimes you have to pay, albeit a reduced amount to cover product cost.

Dame Helena I feel this is the robin equivalent of the cucumber/ cat trick. Possibly a bit mean....but irresistible not to try it at least once 😆

Just tell yourself David Attenborough would do the same, in the name of researchWink

One evening someone asked me this question (as if I'd know!) does a cows udder feel anything like a penis.

We googled but nothing, so any farmers around that can answer this very weird question? Grin

OK, so what is the cucumber/cat trick?
crackofdoom · 31/03/2022 13:44

steppemum best googled, but basically if you wait until your cat is occupied with food, then stealthily creep up and place a cucumber behind them, when they turn round and notice it the results can be explosive. Presumably their brains register it as a snake. I allowed the DC to inflict this on our cats once and once only. It is pretty mean- and hysterically funny .

Oh, I have one, that I cannot find the answer to:

How did ballet evolve? It's so stylised, but who invented it? What form of dance did it evolve from and why?

Oh I know this one. It originated in Italy in the 16th century and initially evolved out of dances put on for court entertainment. It probably wouldn't be recognised as ballet as we know it today though...over subsequent centuries, it developed and became more stylised, with dancing experts establishing the positions and specific movements.

I'm afraid I can't remember who first danced on pointe but that came relatively late and once done for the first time by the dancer-who-i-forget was widely imitated. I have a feeling that the developments in pointe work happened at the Russian Court but I could be wrong.

I think it was after pointe was established the the ballet costumes as we know them became the norm, as people focused on lithe forms of the body with a focus on the legs. Tutus came about as a way of showing off the whole leg during the dance.

Another police one, whenever they're shown raiding houses/looking for evidence on TV the house is always fairly tidy so they can go through rooms/stuff quite quickly. Even squalid houses/slums are very dirty but not cluttered. How would a raid for drugs, or a murder weapon say, work in real life in a very cluttered house or a hoarders house, with cupboards bursting with random junk and clothes piled up all over the bedroom floor etc? Are the police allowed to just plough through and make it even messier while they look for whatever it is or do they have to sort of tidy up as they go just to sort through the place?
I was once in a very large, very very messy house when it was raided. There was no way they could have gone through everything thoroughly.

They did a fairly thorough check of the room the suspect had been sleeping in (it wasn't his home), then took a pretty cursory glance in the other rooms before thoroughly checking the freezer (?!) and then leaving without finding anything.

I never did find out what they were looking for but I can only assume it was something fairly large given the way they searched.
@ancientgran your DH sounds fabulous!
First question, when you pick up your suitcase from the carousel, if someone picks up yours by mistake, how do you prove it /get it back?
Second question, why do easy jet have a speedy pass, when it's still just a free for all
Question three, can Vets legally treat minor ailments on humans in an emergency?
If your suitcase still has the airline tags on, it has your name printed on it.

If they took the tags off and nothing in the case has your name on you probably can't prove it, but they would probably only want their own luggage back anyway!

DebenhamsHadSomeLovelyStuff · 31/03/2022 20:25

It's strange though isn't it @noodlezoodle? If they are not honest we'd lose all our stuff, especially if your stuff is better/more saleable than theirs
I get that all the checks we go through are there for security reasons but at the end of the journey we are relying on people's honesty
What happens if you're delayed getting to the carousel?
I'm buying the cheapest suitcase ever now so no one will be tempted
No LV for me, even if I could afford it Grin

@ShowOfHands

As long as you nag him in the manner of a grumpy Inspector, he'll probably appreciate it/respond in a thoroughly Pavlovian fashion. Sounds like he didn't have it easy at all. The force is a difficult career when all things are equal. Too right you're proud of him.

Can I just ask though, is it possible to train them not to mumble "clear left" from the passenger seat every time you approach a junction? It's been 15yrs of service and I'm not sure how much longer I can take it.

Oh that made me laugh. You'd think over 50 years after his driving course he'd stop telling me what the police way of doing things is.

I find the best approach is not to let him be a passenger, fortunately an adapted car means he can drive.

ancientgran · 31/03/2022 22:08

@steppemum

Mary, Joseph, Jesus and conception.

The idea that Mary herself was born from immaculate conception is a specifically catholic view. It is not in the Bible, and is not believed by non catholics. Mary was, according to the Bible, just a normal girl.
According to the Bible: Mary and Joseph were engaged, but not married, and so she was still a virgin.
Jesus conception is by the Holy Spirit.

Well Catholic education so I didn't realise that. I've always wondered why non Catholics confused the Immaculate and the Miraculous conceptions.

Jesus conception is by the Holy Spirit. So would non Catholics still see that as a miracle? Do they call it The Miraculous Conception?

PollyPutTheKettleOnKettleOn · 31/03/2022 22:08

Oh it might have been!
steppemum · 01/04/2022 11:45

It is usually called the Virgin Birth I think, the obsession with the conception seems to also be quite catholic!
But yes, the standard view is that it is a miracle. Otherwise the whole point of Jesus being God's son and not Joseph's is gone.

And after Jesus Mary goes on to have more children, Jesus's (half) brothers and sisters, who are also mentioned in the Bible.
