How hot is the coffee in police stations and other odd questions

224 replies

buddhasbelly · 29/03/2022 11:32

I'm watching a programme where a suspect is being interviewed at a police station and they ask him if he wants a coffee.

It got me wondering if the coffee in police stations is always a bit tepid and never boiling hot (therefore tasting a bit shit) in case it gets thrown at a police officer.

Any police officers care to enlighten me?

Also what other pointless questions do you have?

Yes I know Google is a thing. I like a bit of chat.

Calandor some lorries have fitted fridges, DH lives in his truck all week and he uses an inverter so he can run a microwave and a kettle.

Do hairdressers do each others hair at the salon (say after work) or do something hey do their own? When do they do it (day off, after shift, lunch break)? Do they have to pay?

In my old salon we did each others on quieter days or when there was a large gap between appointments. If a client came in off the street we would prioritise them but we rarely needed to stop halfway through a colour, maybe needed to dry it ourselves etc. We didn't have to pay. I would normally get my highlights put in just before closing then wash out at home (lived 5 minutes away)

Do off duty police officers report/stop every law break, even minor ones? Say if you're in a restaurant and see someone run out without paying, would you(do you have to) leave your meal and company to chase down the criminal or can you switch off?

@IstillMissHim

They do make a judgement, my friend is a custody sergeant and he told me he loves it when they have military grannies in (one persistent lady on his patch always campaigning on the issue du jour and her mates) and he pops down to the cells to chat with them bringing the good biscuits, they don't bother locking them in even

Okay. Here is a sciencey one

If it's raining and I have to walk, say 20m, would I get more/less/the same amount of rain on me if I walked or ran?
Walking would obviously take longer BUT running would be hitting more drops in a shorter time no?

MargaretThursday · 29/03/2022 16:02

You're reminding me of the time I took a call from a lady who wanted to complain that the coffee served in the cafe was too hot. She gave her name etc.

So I went to pass this on to the cafe manager and he gave me an eye roll.
Apparently she'd returned the coffee without trying it and told him she knew it would be too cold unless he put it in the microwave for 30 seconds. He told her that would be too hot, but she insisted, so he took it into the kitchen and brought it out again, and made a performance of warning her it was too hot to drink.
She never knew it never went into the microwave. Grin

@AiryFairy1

I was thinking the same *@ToPlayOrNotToPlay*

My recent pondering (having returned several clothing items) is do the people on the receiving end repackage the items so they’re all nicely folded again in unripped bags? I always try and refold clothes to look the same, but invariably the package is lumpy doesn’t look brand new any more!

Yep! I did this as a summer job when I was a student. We got piles of stuff sorted into types from the depot and we checked them for wear, smell etc. cleaned them with sticky tape if needed to get pet hairs etc off and refolded and packed them.
SallyMcNally · 29/03/2022 16:22

Maybe worth noting that we did reject stuff if it was clearly too worn/dirty/broken to resell and that went to the seconds shop to be sold to staff for a big discount

Pinklimey · 29/03/2022 16:30

The suitcase thing- Some people really hate that oof sound when someone picks up something heavy. As a child I certainly did.

It always annoys me when someone says "see you at lunch-time". Midday, 1 pm, 2 pm?

SunflowerSmith · 29/03/2022 16:49

Do vets xray or scan themselves or work colleagues instead of going to a&e or waiting for a hospital appointment?

DameHelena · 29/03/2022 16:56

I thought the empty coffee cups for actors was because it was one more thing to worry about in terms of what would happen if an actor spilled it (whole costume change/possible burns!)

Justanotherobserver · 29/03/2022 16:57

What do birds think when humans keep changing their 'plumage' and what do they think when they see us hanging it out on the washing line?

Love this.

There was a mythbusters episode in this, they found that if you run through the rain you get more wet. Though their original test showed the opposite, but was with simulated rain.
MrsTerryPratchett · 29/03/2022 16:59

I used to work with offenders and at one point it was a thing to add sugar to hot drinks and throw them so they'd 'stick' more.

I was you g when I worked there and that was quite the 🥺

Agreed! And even worse is “tea time”. Unless you know them well you don’t know whether they are referring to a hot beverage mid afternoon or an evening meal. So misleading. Just commit to an actual time, people!
OldTinHat · 29/03/2022 17:19

I asked the cashier in Morrisons yesterday if the music they play is on a loop and if she has to listen to the same stuff everyday. Apparently not - they have playlists for valentines, mothers day, fathers day, actual time of day and it's not repeated at all.

So that was a useless question answered and it made me very happy 😊

No. If rainfall is constant, running would be hitting less drops because you spent less time under rainclouds.
gluenotsoup · 29/03/2022 17:27

But, you would be hitting the raindrops faster wouldn’t you, so would they not splat rather than lightly landing, therefore making you feel wetter? I am seriously over invested in this question as I spend far too much of my life dodging rain while bringing the washing in😂

When my cat is sat on the bed and I’m getting changed I always wonder what she thinks of me taking my clothes off and being all skin. Grin

@gluenotsoup are you not familiar with Billy Whizz?

@SunflowerSmith
I don't know about scans and xrays but years ago I worked in a vet's. A nurse got bitten on the hand by a dog and the vet just sewed her up again.

My local Morrisons is 80s all the time. Mel and Kim's 'Respectable' was blasting out yesterday. Grin I love a bit of Bananarama while shopping. don't know what the young people think!
