Just signed my first book contract !
Started writing it january last year and finished in february this year, first publisher I approached has accepted it, so happy. Smile
It's for any age over 8 -108 it's a [humourous so I'm told] story about red squirrels on the isle of wight coming into conflict with the main land greys who think there is an endless supply of all year round food and the reds are keeping it for themselves.
The greys are determined to get to the island by any means and the reds are equally determined to keep them out.
Hoping to make a real go of it, fingers crossed.
Did anyone else get their 'inner book' out during the lockdowns?

Ah, that's fab. Sounds a bit bonkers, but I love that! Sounds like the type of thing I could buy my MIL.

Celebrations for you tonight? !

Winecheesesleep · 28/03/2022 14:44

How exciting, congratulations!

iheartmybeachhut · 28/03/2022 14:46

Thanks, it's a totally bonkers story line, you wouldn't believe some of the methods both sides employ to meet their objectives and oddly enough it's based on the Osbourne house estate!
Def a glass or two of something nice Wine

Well done you! It's so hard to get a book published these days unless you're an established author, or famous.

Winecheesesleep · 28/03/2022 14:48

Love that Grin

AffIt · 28/03/2022 14:55

Ooh that sounds brilliant, well done! I was so excited to see red squirrels when I was on the Isle of Wight a few years ago. We are going there in summer, so will hopefully see some again. Will definitely keep an eye out for your book.

Title and publication date?

Yes, I'd love to know this too. Sounds quirky and fun!
ClaudineClare · 28/03/2022 15:01

Which publisher, OP?

nearlyspringyay · 28/03/2022 15:03

Without wanting to piss on your chips OP is it a traditional deal or a self publishing deal?

SilverHairedCat · 28/03/2022 15:04

That sounds fun! Congratulations OP.

ClaudineClare · 28/03/2022 15:04

I assume it is a children's book? If so, get yourself on Twitter if you are not already. The children's publishing community is really active and supportive. It will help you to promote your lovely book. Congratulations!

There are a lot of sharks out there, it is true. The golden rule is: the publisher pays the author, not the other way around.
iheartmybeachhut · 28/03/2022 15:38

traditional publisher, 'The secret life of squirrels' contract just signed and it has gone to the next stage, printing will be months yet so no approx date.
It's a story about family, friends, loyalty and living in a small community. The animals have their own social media etc and are loosely based on the type of people we all have in our families, very curious, mischief making kits [young squirrels] over bearing mil [adores the gc] with long, suffering dh, and many more.

takingmytime there are several reds residing near the Garlic Farm at arreton. Also if you are in the langbridge area near sandown there is a cafe called 'peddlars' it is a favourite hangout too, we've been there and the squirrels will sit on the patio chairs and tables.
One of the best places we know of though, is at Alverstone Mead nature reserve There is a hide on Burnt House lane. The local wildlife trust has set up feeders for the squirrels and they are very active. We saw 5 or 6 the other day and one was about 2 metres away eatting some squirrel food from a feeder.
There ia a local lady known as the 'squirrel whisperer' she's there every weekend and what she doesn't know isn't worth knowing about them !

Once it's published I'll post up a synopsis and let you know the title [current one is not final], publisher and cost. I plan to donate a portion of proceeds to the Isle of Wight Red Squirrel Trust charity who help our furry friends on the island. Big shout out to Helen and Beth !
