Hi, I know this has been posted a lot before and please don’t judge me, I feel so so sad for the people
Of Ukraine and am doing what I can to help them in regards to donations ect and I can’t ever imagine to be them, however is anyone terrified the nuclear war is about to kick off here, I can’t get the idea out of my head! I suffer with anxiety
Disorder anyway and have only just got over the idea of Covid for the last 2 years with life being pretty much non existent and now this! I know non of you can give me an answer to what may happen in the future, but I wondered what everyone else’s views are and how your managing your anxieties and worries please.
Thanks

I was terrified at the start. I found it impossible to do anything (what was the point?) and was considering suicide. My anxiety got so bad, my legs kept giving way. Something had to change.

No more news, and no more doom scrolling. If Ukraine was mentioned on FB, I would 'hide' the post. Doing that means the algorithm learns to not show you Ukraine stuff, so you see less.
On MN, you can hide posts, but if you are on desktop, you have to click on them and see the first post to do so.. which seems counter productive.

Don't use MN as your news source. All of it is opinion, some of it bollocks. Give yourself 5 minutes each day to check the news (if you must). Newsround is aimed at kids, but it is easy to digest and not scaremongering. It is not click bait like 99% of the news articles out there.

I can see why some people are not sure why you started this thread. For one, 'Chat' is under 'Fun and Games'.... talking about nuclear war is neither. And if you are someone avoiding all mention of it, seeing the thread title can trigger some pretty anxious thoughts too. My mind went "why is it being mentioned? Have things escalated?".

Yes, I'm aware it's a chat forum. That's why I'm responding. It's, you know, a chat forum.
This is the "Chat" section of the chat forum. Generally used for trivial or fun stuff. There's lots of other sections...

Chat is under Fun & Games.

The MN powers that be somehow don't think that a Ukraine Crisis (or whatever name) board is not appropriate right now.

I’m so sorry I didn’t realise, I was struggling to find a right category to be honest and there was a previous thread about Ukraine in chat so I thought that it was a general chat one so for that I’m very sorry I didn’t realise

There is no need to apologise, those who get all arsey about chat just have a minor control freak issue.
carefullycourageous · 27/03/2022 07:27

In the top page of chat threads there is:

  • Ukraine (not yours)
  • death
  • missing persons
  • self-id

It isn't all fluffy.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

Why why would it be a bot? I feel the same!

the threat was there in the 80's, i did my worrying then! so did l. There was nothing like this in the 80’s though. In fact the wall came down in 89.

I find the whole thing worrying.

There was nothing like this in the 80’s ...

I think the people of Afghanistan would beg to differ.

UsernameInTheTown · 27/03/2022 09:04

No I can't wait Hmm.

PaperTyger · 27/03/2022 09:34

Op it's a very valid reaction to this invasion of Ukraine and it beggar's belief that other posters cant cope with this but have the cheek to post rudley or even ask for this to be moved!

When the war first started yes I was extremely worried.
Because I didn't know what Putin's state was.
I feel he is more InTouch with things and he doesn't want to die either.
His generals ( what's left of them) don't want too die either.
Nor their liberal West loving children.

I think the nuclear power plants are a worry.
But my personal view which obviously holds no weightGrin is that it's highly unlikely nuclear all out war will occur.
Highly unlikely a smaller nuke would be used because that could trigger the NATO alliances too go in and it's clear Putin struggles against Ukraine only!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/03/2022 09:39

I remember Afghanistan. I still don’t think it was as dangerous a time as this., where nuclear bombs are being threatened.

It was Brezhnev think who did Afghanistan. He wasn’t as barking as Putin

LightSpeeds · 27/03/2022 09:47

Awwww, really sorry to hear how you're feeling about this. Thanks

I'm not worried (yet) because the war hasn't extended beyond Ukraine. Even so, I still feel it's highly unlikely that anything will happen.

I live very near to a place (3 miles) that would be nuked if that were to happen. Maybe it's because I'm older and you really do stop worrying/caring about things in your fifties but at the moment I'm really just worried about bills and money and the cost of living (more other people's than mine).

The situation is totally out of our control so you need to distract yourself as best you can - try not to listen to the news/updates as this won't help you.

Jenasaurus · 28/04/2022 21:35

To be honest I think we are closer than we have ever been, well in my lifetime anyway. The thing is whatever happens is out of our hands, just try and focus on your day to day life and dont watch the news.

tillytoodles1 · 28/04/2022 21:48

No, if it happens there's nothing I can do about it, I'll just make sure I don't survive, so I'll drive to the nearest point and hopefully be obliterated.

I live pretty near London and feel the same as you

Discovereads · 28/04/2022 22:00

I’m not really worried about nuclear war in regards to Russia. It would be counter to Putins purpose which is rebuilding the Russian Empire to what it was pre 1920s. He’s not going to want to rule a nuclear wasteland. He’s also not going to nuke the west either because mutual assured destruction is still in force.

SpringSunshine09 · 28/04/2022 22:00

Do you know what? It's been a bloody tough time for us anxiety sufferers. Straight out of a pandemic and into a terrible war with the threat of escalation. I'm so sorry you're struggling with it. I am too 💕. Please block out those who cannot understand mental health issues. It does not reflect on you but on them.

The only advice I can think of is that the more you seek reassurance, the more power you give to the fear and anxiety. Also, for every bit of reassurance you get, there will be 5 more bits of information that will leave you needing even more reassurance and then that leads to spiralling, if that makes sense. So try to just label the thoughts when they come, detach, ground yourself and be kind to yourself most importantly. Limit your intake of news and information surrounding this anxiety (says the anxious person on this thread!)

Big hugs X

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 28/04/2022 22:09

Obviously everyone handles stuff differently. I’m a if you die you die type of person (about my self not others) it will happen and that’s that. Unfortunately there’s nothing personally any of us can do to prevent it. The way I see it is no point worrying because if it happens no one will be here to witness the aftermath.

PaperTyger · 28/04/2022 23:00

Op I'm embarrassed by the posts slamming your question.
I've been following this from day one and yes in the beginning I was extremely worried About it! We didn't know Putins state of mind to implement this archaic act of sheer maddnes!

As it's gone on I feel calmer he won't use them.

But it's a fluid situation....we don't know know what's going on in his head or what he will do.

I don't think anyone can rule it out;
This is the whole reason why we have been pussy footing around him And allowing this act of agression.

If he did send his Satan over...what can we do?

I'm sure we have defences... I'm sure we are on high alert...

But as a citizen what else can we do?
