Or do you think realistically no one will start to use Nuclear weapons

EricCartmansMagicalUnderpants · 24/03/2022 14:36

I don't know if it will happen or not, but for me, there's no point worrying about the things I cannot change.

KnowingMeKnowingYouAhaaaa · 24/03/2022 14:37

I'm not worried, there's far more pressing matters like people struggling with the cost of living. This is more concerning to me. If a nuclear bomb was dropped well you die quite simply, you probably won't realise what has happened, boom you're gone. Not really worth worrying about to me.

TinLeaf · 24/03/2022 14:37

@SaveWaterDrinkGin

Yes. Been panicked for a month to the point I can barely function. So many articles saying this is only heading one way. Can't see the point of planning anything for the future, I don't understand why everyone else isn't panicking

Have a word with yourself.

It seems like you need to have a word with yourself. It seems like SaveWater is in a bad place right now and need kindness, stop acting like a dick.

@Gerbilteeth

I think it's fairly likely, yes. Trying not to spend time thinking about it, because there's no point, and I don't want my children to think that way. I've always thought that nuclear war would happen at some point - if the weapons exist, someone will inevitably use them at some point. We may well be at that point.
Yes I agree

The whole MAD concept always bothered me. I mean we tell mums not to take formula to hospital or have it in the house in case they use it just because it’s there yet expect men to have nuclear weapons they’ll always have to hand but never use 🤦‍♀️

GnomeDePlume · 24/03/2022 14:38

I will be planting potatoes tomorrow. If I genuinely thought there was a risk then I wouldn't bother.

Cherryblossoms85 · 24/03/2022 14:38

Not a great deal of point worrying really. Can't change it. Can just make sure I have enough booze. Ideally morphine too, but that's more tricky.

Fairislefandango · 24/03/2022 14:38

It’s very likely now and I don’t understand why people are saying it isn’t.

What makes your belief that it's very likely more valid than others' belief that it's not very likely?

Smokeahontas · 24/03/2022 14:40

@FraterculaArctica

I am absolutely not a troll, I have posted on MN for years all under the same username. And yes I have three small children. Feel like I'm just going through the motions for them till it all happens.
You really need to speak to your GP or arrange some kind of therapy. You cannot live your life like this.
Waxonwaxoff0 · 24/03/2022 14:41

I'm not worried. Worrying is a pointless exercise to me. If I'm going to be killed by a nuke then it will happen regardless of whether I worry or not, so I don't worry.

DrPrepper · 24/03/2022 14:41

won't let myself be worried about that. So nah. Let's start fixing the small things. Plant a tree

@FraterculaArctica

Those of you who aren't worried - is it because you think it won't happen, or you aren't worried about being snuffed out? This is what I can't get my head round... if someone close to you had say terminal cancer, you would expect to be upset and spend a lot of time talking about how to come to terms with it. Yet the likelihood of this happening to all of us and no-one seems remotely bothered!
Neither, I just don't entertain worry, I'm good at supressing my emotions. Always have been.
Gimlisaxe · 24/03/2022 14:44

I am not too worried, most of the reports are based on estimates of what people have. As for Putin putting the alert up, I have a Red Dwarf scene in my head where the quote goes

Amber light is flashing

Rimmer: Go to Red Alert
Kyrton: Are you sure sir it does mean changing the bulb

Fairislefandango · 24/03/2022 14:44

So if (when) it drags on, but the nukes never happen, how are you going to feel about the fact that you'll have spent all that time just going through the motions rather than being fully present and engaged with your children, and for no purpose?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/03/2022 14:46

I was worried about a month ago!

Now I’m more worried about the fact we’ve left the Ukrainians to it, which seems unforgivable to me.

The thi g is, worrying about it wont help and changes nothing. I'm not so worried that I'm going to cash up my savings and tear through my bucket list but, on the other hand, if these are my last few weeks on earth I dont intend to spend them rocking and sobbing in a corner either.
Fairislefandango · 24/03/2022 14:46

...in fact, even in the unlikely event that it did happen. I mean... any kind of disaster could befall any of us at any time. That doesn't mean it's ok to therefore spend the time we have catastrophising and not bothering to live our lives.

MarshaBradyo · 24/03/2022 14:47

It’s very likely now and I don’t understand why people are saying it isn’t.

Where is this coming from? Why very likely?

Re the op I don’t think so and I’m not stressing about it

I was more worried earlier on, and it’s not so much me but what would be taken from my dc and next generation

And thinking that makes me feel grateful for what I have as some people are in war zones in hellish conditions

Gerbilteeth · 24/03/2022 14:48

I don't know why some people assume there are lots of people between Putin and the bomb. He's a dictator. I assume he has direct and immediate access. I also see him as the kind of man who wants to take others down with him.

Wellthisiscrapeh · 24/03/2022 14:49

Nope.

Because honestly, I could worry myself into oblivion and what would it achieve?

I’ve got things in my personal life that are currently making me debate jumping in front of a bus. I don’t have the energy to think about anything else, especially things I can’t do anything about.

Wellthisiscrapeh · 24/03/2022 14:50

(I’m not being glib or making light by saying jump in front of a bus by the way, I’m actually having some pretty hard core mental health help).

toastfiend · 24/03/2022 14:50

Because there's no big red button.

There are codes, held by different people, and others who are required to carry out different steps of the process. There are checks and balances in place, dictator or not.

I'm not sure it's a 'men' thing.

Thatcher was a big fan of nuclear weapons and MAD. I'm sure I read she threatened to "nuke Argentina" at one point, too...

SofiaSoFar · 24/03/2022 14:53

@toastfiend

That's true, regarding there being no single 'fire' button.

And the UK's nuclear deterrent remaining unused relies partly on Radio 4 continuing to broadcast, which is somewhat worrying!

Quppity · 24/03/2022 14:56

I also like a pp feel it’s awful we have left the Ukrainians to it. I don’t think history will look back very kindly at the worlds reaction to this.
