Or do you think realistically no one will start to use Nuclear weapons

@Yellowleadbetter

No. Because there are no winners. We will be dead. Compared to the rest of the wold, we are a tiny island. We will be wiped out in one hit. We have absolutely zero control over any of it.

So for now, the sun is out and I have today.

The UK wouldn't get wiped out in one hit at all, it would take over 200 nukes to wipe out the whole of the uk.

We have been here before in the Cuban Missile Crisis. I was only 10 but I remember the Doomsday clock. I think we were at 2 or 3 minutes to midnight and destruction. And then Kruschev turned the ships carrying the missiles back and the crisis was over.
Let's hope the same thing happens. Putin might have run mad, in in which case there is no predicting what he will do; or he might be indulging in brinkmanship to see what he gets out of this. I think he cannot take more losses so will hammer Ukraine worse in the hope of submission. Whether that means chemical or nuclear is anyone's guess. His own government may in the end get rid of him. They won't fancy nuclear any more than we do.

I remember that clearly too. My DM bought me the little teddy I’d been desperate for but that she couldn’t afford. She told me when I was in my 20s that she had wanted me to die happy. I hadn’t realised just how close nuclear annihilation was.

I’m sick to death of it. He’s just holding the world hostage. He will never use them. Nobody will. It’s mutual destruction. Plus, it’ll take more than one to destroy the U.K. by the time it’s launched he’d be looking at getting many heading towards Russia. He’d only ever do it if he could get away with it. He’s not gone mad, he’s just bad. He’s always been bad. Nothings new. He’s losing so he’s got his nuclear collection out to count it in front of the world. Hes only done this to prevent nato from coming to the aid of Ukraine in a military basis as he knows he won’t win plus he can’t guarantee chinas backing. China will do whatever is in their best interest. This is what someone does when their back is against the wall! He’s losing.

crepesncream · 25/03/2022 23:15

Isn't it unbelievable that all this death, destruction, grief, worry etc is from just ONE man. One man causing all this horror. He has far far too much power. I absolutely hate him.

This is my thinking too.

@1dayatatime

For anyone thinking that if the Russians use a tactical nuke in Ukraine then it wouldn't necessarily lead to an all out nuclear war please please have a look at this simulation of this exact event by Princeton University "Plan A".
This posits a scenario which begins with NATO and Russia already engaged in a conventional conflict, and has no relevance whatsoever to the prospect of Russia using a tactical device in Ukraine.

"This posits a scenario which begins with NATO and Russia already engaged in a conventional conflict, and has no relevance whatsoever to the prospect of Russia using a tactical device in Ukraine."

++++

The relevance is that if Russia used a tactical nuke in Ukraine then it would be highly likely that NATO would then enter the conflict in some form.

If Russia was prepared to use tactical nukes against Ukraine in a conflict then they would equally be prepared to use tactical nukes against a superior NATO force in conflict with them especially if they were facing a clear defeat.

@Quppity

It’s similar to when people were worried about covid and people were dismissing this and asking posters if they had anxiety. There are numerous threads from two years ago when this happened and many posters said don’t be ridiculous it won’t affect us.
I was about to say this and in a lot of ways you are right but on reflection the main difference is there were things we could do re Covid eg Masks, distancing, developing a vaccine and treatments etc though none of these things could be done until people acknowledged there was a problem. Hence some people arguing there was a problem early on to convince others to take some action.

There is really nothing we can do about what Russia chooses to do in the war with Ukraine so in my mind that makes it very different.

I was one of those people saying Covid was a major problem early on and did what I could to prepare despite being called ' anxious' and 'fearful' a few times but try not to discuss discuss or think about a nuclear war because there really is absolutely nothing I can do to prepare for the worst case scenario. I don't therefore think it is useful or kind to try and convince others that there is the real possibility of a nuclear war. I may believe this but there is no point worrying about it and absolutely no point in spreading that worry.

Quppity · 28/03/2022 08:39

Actually that is true bumblingbovine and probably explains why I worried a lot about covid early on but I am more relaxed about this situation. Although I guess for some people they find it hard not to worry when there is nothing they can do anyway. Which is understandable, it’s just different ways people cope.

crepesncream · 28/03/2022 11:33

I worry a lot but then reassure my self that Putin doesn't want to live in a post nuclear world where his huge wealth would mean nothing. He enjoys the finer things of life too much.
