Is everywhere dog-friendly these days?

I'm getting increasingly fed up with dogs being everywhere - in stores, in cafes, getting under my feet and nearly tripping me up. Was browsing in Waterstones Sat morning and another customer had a dog on a long lead and it jumped up at me. Owner was oblivious. I suspect I'm in a minority but I am finding this constant pandering to dog owners wearing.

I think your being slightly dramatic

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 23/03/2022 13:56

As a pet shop owner I disagree Wink

Ncwinc · 23/03/2022 13:56

It’s ok, my dog prefers independent bookshops.

Certainly feels like it.

Dunno why we all have to be friendly to dogs either. Can't people just allow them, without being their friends?

FairyCakeSprinkles · 23/03/2022 13:59

No, they aren't allowed everywhere. Would you like me to make a list of the 1,000s of places where dogs aren't allowed.

Waterstones and other bookshops are trying to stay open and have obviously decided dog owners are within their demographic and that this would be a good approach for them. Presumably they think the benefit outweighs the risk of annoying people like you.

clpsmum · 23/03/2022 14:00

I agree it pisses me off. I've just been in next and a woman had one in there she was carrying it but not the point. I'm a dog lover and have a dog but don't want them in cafes pubs shops etc

vodkaredbullgirl · 23/03/2022 14:01
Hmm
Jonny1265 · 23/03/2022 14:03

It's not like that where I live. A few pubs/cafes are dog friendly but not much else.

2022HereWeCome · 23/03/2022 14:04

@Cas112 maybe.

Just fed up of drooly, slightly smelly and grubby dogs jumping up at me, or seeing dogs getting stressed in stores and becoming yappy. Really don't understand why you would want to go shopping with a dog tbh. Why not take them for a walk in the woods instead?

We recently took our 2 to Cornwall and there was only 1 place we couldn't take them in. We found people were really friendly, and one lady in a bookshop insisted I took them in to say hello and gave them a biscuit each.

Hoppinggreen · 23/03/2022 14:07

So if my dog is clean(ish), non drooly and well behaved are you ok with dogs being in shops?
Because if you are banning some dogs based on behaviour then I’m with you. I would only take my dog somewhere he won’t bother anyone else.

Deadringer · 23/03/2022 14:09

I agree op

ZeroFuchsGiven · 23/03/2022 14:11

I couldn't agree more, If I wanted a dog or wanted to be near a dog I would get one.

2022HereWeCome · 23/03/2022 14:12

@Hoppinggreen - depends if the owner is in control of their dog to be honest. And acknowledges that some people have allergies, or some people don't like dogs or that it's not a good idea to let a dog start getting stressed.

You probably won't be in a minority on MN. Mumsnetters love nothing more than complaining about dogs.

Personally no, I don't find that dogs are everywhere. I very rarely see them in stores, only very occasionally in the odd dog friendly cafe.. I'm sure it varies by area though as some are much more dog friendly than others.

I love seeing wellbehaved dogs in places and even though I don't take my two anywhere, as it'd make them anxious, I make a point of going to pet friendly places when I can. Partly because I want to support them but also just to see the cute dogs.

2022HereWeCome · 23/03/2022 14:13

And yes, I will take my custom elsewhere

I don't personally like it TBH. Even a well behaved dog is likely to be smelly and shed hairs. I think fine, if it's a dog-friendly pub, that's suitable. But I wouldn't be particularly pleased if someone had brought their dog into a bookshop or homewares shop, or especially a food shop. I wouldn't say anything, and I get that it's the shop owners' decision to make.
Lockheart · 23/03/2022 14:16

A) Everywhere is dog friendly, guide dogs are allowed everywhere by law.

B) I've never experienced being harassed dogs in every shop or pub I set foot in and I suggest you are being hyperbolic. I rarely even see dogs inside unless I'm in a country pub or somewhere very outdoorsy.

danadas · 23/03/2022 14:16

I think they are allowed in most places now but I don't mind dogs so I'm OK with it, wouldn't dream of taking my dog shopping with me though!

I accidentally stood on one the other day, in a busy shop and it yelped poor sod. It was a little scrap of a dog on a long lead and I did feel for it. It must always be getting trod on being taken to busy places.

Fernandina · 23/03/2022 14:18

I'm fed up with it too. We've been looking at booking to go to a holiday park in the UK and all the parks I have looked at are bending over themselves to be dog-friendly.

Sorry, but I don't want to go to a holiday park full of other people's dogs being a bloody nuisance.

I don't think assistance dogs being allowed is the same thing as dog friendly, is it?
deadlanguage · 23/03/2022 14:22

I agree OP. It’s one of the reasons I prefer to shop online and I’ve written off lots of hotels that never would have allowed dogs 5 or so years ago, since I don’t fancy staying somewhere that stinks of dog.

2022HereWeCome · 23/03/2022 14:22

I'm in a city and post-pandemic dogs are everywhere all the time. So many places have gone dog friendly it is the exception for places not to allow dogs. My favourite is a shopping centre providing dog pushchairs and backpacks to carry your dog in.

I can't say I've noticed, but I don't mind dogs.
