Is everywhere dog-friendly these days?

I'm getting increasingly fed up with dogs being everywhere - in stores, in cafes, getting under my feet and nearly tripping me up. Was browsing in Waterstones Sat morning and another customer had a dog on a long lead and it jumped up at me. Owner was oblivious. I suspect I'm in a minority but I am finding this constant pandering to dog owners wearing.

Just a thought - if dogs are allowed can I bring my cat as well? What about a hamster? Pet rabbit? Mink? Where would you draw a line?
Well you could, but is that really fair on the animal? My dog loves the pub.. my cat? Not so much
Potatoesdonthavefaces · 23/03/2022 20:18

I love that National Trust gardens are still dog free. It's great having somewhere to take DC where we don't have to think about dogs mess/ dogs jumping up on DC.

It’s starting to cause me a problem because I have really bad dog allergies. It sets my asthma off terribly. If I want to book a holiday I’m limited to non dog friendly places and they are few and far between these days.

I love dogs btw and don’t object to some places allowing them, however more and more are jumping on the band wagon and it’s limiting my options

Well I'd draw the line at an elephant in the room, but we won't talk about that now!

I work in a pub and there was a cat in the other week. Seemed perfectly happy and enjoyed the fuss tbf, had a casual wander around with its lead not attached to its harness. At a street food market last summer and there was 2 men with 2 ferrets in harnesses in the beer garden. I've taken horses to the pub before. No real discrimination between creatures however I wouldn't take a horse to a clothes store

If the shop / cafe / pub / hotel / whatever allows you to bring your cat / mink / rabbit / hamster then fill your boots, it's none of my business.

Dogs make my DD very nervous - to tears sometimes if they run up to her. She can look ahead and try to avoid them in parks and outdoor cafes etc. But dogs in pubs and shops would prevent her feeling she could go inside.

CatDogMonkeyPOW · 23/03/2022 20:56

I live in the Lake District. The only non dog friendly place near me is flipping Wetherspoons. And that gets loads of negative reviews for not being dog friendly, as if it's not enough that the sodding fur babies can go into every other establishment in the area. I'm not completely anti dog, but it would be nice to be able to go for a coffee and a cake somewhere that doesn't stink of wet dog.

“I have to say that I have noticed poorly behaved children more than I ever see poorly behaved dogs.”

Again. Not an equivalent comparator. Children are human beings. Dogs are animals. Why does this need pointing out to literate adults?

it dosent need pointing out at all , which is why is makes it worse that there are so many poorly behaved children many of whom should know better accompanied by their useless parents worse than a poorly behaved dog
Hawkins001 · 23/03/2022 21:36

I don't mind animals, as long as they don't wee or poop on anything while in the stores.

Human beings are animals. We're not some strange alien or divine species. We're just as smelly and grubby as dogs, in our own ways. We (collective we) shed hair and skin, often don't wash our hands properly, track mud in off the street, our children are notoriously oozy and sticky, it's not that rare that we behave badly (adults AND children)...
XenoBitch · 23/03/2022 22:12

I take my dog to cafes and pubs. That is more because I don't want to leave her alone at home for extended periods. I can go to the shops without her.
Dog friendly shops are still a blessing though. If I go on holiday, I can't leave her in the accommodation.
I have never had any hassle, or been tripped up, by a dog in a shop. Kids though.... one proper faceplanted my basket in a supermarket. I think he knocked a tooth out. Was racing down the aisles with no parent in sight.

Deadringer · 24/03/2022 14:15

Children can be annoying, as can some adults, but they are people, and shops, cafes, pubs etc are designed for use by people, not animals. Some well behaved pets with responsible owners are possibly tolerable in such places, but generally they are a nuisance.

stillherenow · 24/03/2022 14:16

Wish my dog would go into shops. He thinks they're all the vets .

Adarajames · 24/03/2022 16:21

Holidaying / travelling solo with my dogs, they do tend to come to most places with me, but they are on short leads, expected to be calm and quiet, and dealt with quickly if not. You can judge how stressful they find it by this photo Wink

worriedatthistime · 24/03/2022 16:48

How are they everywhere most dogs ate not allowed in shops other than guidedogs
Around here most are allowed in pubs etc as we are seni rural and well behaved dogs are allowed in
I have dog i only let him approach people who ask so in that your are not unreasonable

stillherenow · 24/03/2022 21:10

In my town dogs can go in all the shops except the pharmacy. Which would be nice if he would oblige!

NellesVilla · 27/03/2022 11:22

So many people I know, prefer dogs to children, myself included.

I ignore children but any friendly dog is welcome to come and say hello. The only issue is my dog dislikes other dogs!

clpsmum · 27/03/2022 11:24

My sister is allergic to dogs so it's a bit of a nightmare for her

CounsellorTroi · 27/03/2022 11:58

There are far more dog friendly cafes and coffee shops where I live than there used to be. One is called Coffi Lab. They are a very small chain in south east Wales and Marlborough. They sponsor guide dogs and have dog treat menus.

I can’t remember when I was last harassed by a dog in a public place.

bellac11 · 27/03/2022 11:59

The best place we ever went with our late dog was Keswick, he was allowed everywhere, it was great.

maddy68 · 27/03/2022 12:05

I feel the same about children. Well actually more their entitled parents

More dogs less unaware parents

alexandraperson · 02/01/2023 19:34

I really (most) dogs, as creatures, on a personal level. Many (not all!) are incredibly sweet natured and likeable.

But I don't like seeing poor dogs with breathing problems grunting away as strangely-bred fashion accessories, for their odd, aesthetically / morally challenged owners.

Or all the flipping POO everywhere. This has definitely increased and its revolting. This is a major problem. There was a pile of it outside my actual front door the other day.

And I certainly don't want to see them in shops / restaurants.

And I certainly don't appreciate grown adults telling my 7 year old, 'don't worry, he's friendly' when she has a massive dog jumping up at her. Yeah, just ...no. And when I complain, the dog-owner gets defensive. All very weird.

And most weirdly, while out on walks / in the playground, I regularly see parents to very young children completely prioritise and pay a lot much attention to their dogs, as opposed to their young children, which I find frankly weird.

There does seem to be a weird pathological problem going on with British people and dogs.

Cherrysoup · 02/01/2023 20:34

I’m very anti-social so highly unlikely to go anywhere with or without dogs, although we did 2 pub visits last summer because it was near the walk. All 3 sat silently and a server came and made a massive fuss of them, they’re quite cute, all the same breed so looks nice, I suppose (not why we got them, we’re just keen on the breed). I can’t imagine trying to take them to shops, tho, or even cafes, it’s not going to be very restful even when they sit quietly. I think they’re probably happier at home, tbh.

Evivie · 02/01/2023 20:44

I agree OP. I'd rather dogs weren't everywhere too.
