Is everywhere dog-friendly these days?

I'm getting increasingly fed up with dogs being everywhere - in stores, in cafes, getting under my feet and nearly tripping me up. Was browsing in Waterstones Sat morning and another customer had a dog on a long lead and it jumped up at me. Owner was oblivious. I suspect I'm in a minority but I am finding this constant pandering to dog owners wearing.

I don't generally encounter dogs in shops that aren't pet shops, which is as it should be in my opinion. Don't mind a dog in a pub though.

vodkaredbullgirl · 23/03/2022 14:24

Well if you live in a city, what do you expect.

I am glad I am not alone in my grumpiness

I've experienced far less disruption with dogs in cafes/garden centres/pubs than I have with kids.

I went to Beckett's in Whitby once(Wonderful cafe with great generously filled toasties) and there were some kids screaming and running around. Thankfully they left after about 15 minutes. A bunch of terriers came in with their owners as they left. I didn't hear a squeak from any of them. Give me dogs any day.

Notdoingthis · 23/03/2022 14:28

Last night I went for a drink with friends and one bought her dog. I would rather she hadn't. Today I went for a walk and a dog jumped on me and the owner did nothing. So I am with the OP. Not everyone loves dogs and wants to be around them.

daffodilsbluebells · 23/03/2022 14:29

I wish people that particularly hate dogs, small kids or anything else that might annoy you in a city centre would wear those hi-viz jackets announcing they need extra space so we all know to get away from them - some advance warning your day will be destroyed by a dog 'stinking' near you maybe a good idea.

Glenthebattleostrich · 23/03/2022 14:29

A local park, country house and farm near us has 2 lovely cafés, one dog friendly (with a very clearly doggy name) and the other no dogs allowed. The number of times we have been in the dog friendly cafe with our mutt and had people complaining about dogs is laughable!

I like having a variety of places I can take the dog, just like I like having a variety of places I can take the child and a variety of places I can leave them at home (with appropriate supervision!). Although my dog waits for people to say hello to her, is kept on a short lead, doesn't shed or drool and generally just likes to be close to her family.

Hoppinggreen · 23/03/2022 14:30
@Hoppinggreen - depends if the owner is in control of their dog to be honest. And acknowledges that some people have allergies, or some people don't like dogs or that it's not a good idea to let a dog start getting stressed.
I would never take mine anywhere he wasn’t controlled. He isn’t allowed to approach anyone and if people seem to not want him anywhere near them I keep him well away. I take your point about hairs though.
To be honest I wouldn’t actually take him shopping but if we were out for the day and I wanted to go into a book shop or similar then I would

Dogs always look fed up, if they are taken into shops and pubs etc, in food places, they are alert to any smells and aromas from the food etc.and likely to want some tit bits.. I was in a pub once, and the man on the next table had a dog on a long lead, he was chatting to someone, and his dog on the long lead, went under another table near by, and had a big poo under another table, whilst people were eating at that table.

ukborn · 23/03/2022 14:34

I have two and wouldn't dream of taking them shopping. One would get totally stressed. And I wouldn't be able to concentrate. I am amazed when I see people take their dogs to open air malls and busy fairs. The dogs get pulled all over the place.

BobbinHood · 23/03/2022 14:34

It feels like it! Can’t wait for April, then the fuckers are banned from my favourite beaches for the summer and I can actually enjoy going there.

2022HereWeCome · 23/03/2022 14:35

@daffodilsbluebells I don't hate dogs but neither would I approach them or fuss over them. Therefore I also wish that all dog owners pay attention to their dogs and don't let them jump up at me or lick me or drool on me. And pay attention to their dogs and take them out of noisy, loud, busy situations before the dog becomes anxious and stressed.

Strawmite · 23/03/2022 14:36

I do like dogs but I agree OP. Inside restaurants, shops etc are not the places for dogs IMO. Given the recent awful news I don't see why anyone with a small child should be on high alert for dogs in non-dog places in case they could be a risk.
I may be grumpy though having lived next door to the worlds most annoying yappy dog for 4 years whose owners think hes the best thing ever and let him bark for hours non stop because he's sooooo cute...

blockbustervideo · 23/03/2022 14:37

@HoldingTheDoor

You probably won't be in a minority on MN. Mumsnetters love nothing more than complaining about dogs.

Personally no, I don't find that dogs are everywhere. I very rarely see them in stores, only very occasionally in the odd dog friendly cafe.. I'm sure it varies by area though as some are much more dog friendly than others.

I love seeing wellbehaved dogs in places and even though I don't take my two anywhere, as it'd make them anxious, I make a point of going to pet friendly places when I can. Partly because I want to support them but also just to see the cute dogs.

💯! Smile

Dogs are better than screaming kids isn’t really a winning argument.

Wouldn't take my 2 shopping, they be like a bull in a china shop. I do take them to Pets at Home to spend their pocket money Grin

I know a lot of people who find it annoying but it doesn’t bother me that much. The extendable leads are a disaster in shops and it it can cause mayhem when you have too many dogs in the same shop or cafe.

HoldingTheDoor · 23/03/2022 14:48

Did I say that it was? I'm just sharing my experience that I've personally never had a meal ruined by a dog but I've had several ruined by unruly kids.

I'd happily wear one to keep people like you away from me...trouble is people like you would ignore the hi-viz and simper "they're just being friendly" as yet again I'm forced to deal with a grubby creature specifically dogs getting too close to me.

I'm fine with young children - those munchkins will one day prop up the economy if I'm lucky enough to retire so even badly behaved ones are easy enough to tolerate.

yellowsuninthesky · 23/03/2022 14:53
@Cas112 maybe.

Just fed up of drooly, slightly smelly and grubby dogs jumping up at me, or seeing dogs getting stressed in stores and becoming yappy. Really don't understand why you would want to go shopping with a dog tbh. Why not take them for a walk in the woods instead?
Totally agree OP. I don't like dogs much but I am not scared of, or allergic to, them.

I think the current pandering to dog owners goes far to far for those with allergies or who are scared of dogs. They do not need to go everywhere. A country pub, ok. But not shops and restaurants.

Mojoj · 23/03/2022 14:53

Another whinger who seems super popular in the doggy world. It always amuses me how people who don't like dogs are a huge source of attraction to dogs. Jumping all over you, really? Just take your business elsewhere.

Do the entitled owners take any notice of the bans though?
fairylightsandwaxmelts · 23/03/2022 14:55

Everywhere is dog-friendly where I live. I can think of maybe one shop that doesn't allow dogs, excluding supermarkets.

Just ignore them if they're in there - I've never experienced being jumped all over as much as all these dog haters seem to, either Confused
