What would you cook for yourself for dinner on a rare evening alone?

I've got a rare evening alone (well, just the baby and I) this week as DH is working away and I need to choose something really good for dinner. I want to make the most of it. I might have a dessert too Grin

I can't decide!

What would you have? Inspire me please!

I wouldn't cook, I'd get a big fat takeaway!

Cavagirl · 21/03/2022 18:06

Takeaway agreed!

If not - lasagne (homemade or treat yourself to a really nice ready-made one) with a giant garlic ciabatta and red wine

Longcovid21 · 21/03/2022 18:08

Tofu and salad Buddha bowl. All the spicey veggies they wouldn't normally eat.

I'd go for anything shellfish like a prawn linguine.

WoodpeckerInTheTree · 21/03/2022 18:08

Huge prawns, fried in butter and garlic. Crusty bread to mop the juices.
And something sparkling and alcoholic.

Jobseeker19 · 21/03/2022 18:08

Mmm, I'm thinking sweet and sour chicken. The chicken fried and then covered in the sauce and sesame seeds.

LubaLuca · 21/03/2022 18:08

I eat like a greedy toddler when I'm left to my own devices, so it would be something like Weetabix and lots of Wotsits.

lljkk · 21/03/2022 18:09

Beans on toast...

ok, you have a baby, maybe that's your normal. But a basic night off being a slob is my default mode when given a night off.

waterlego · 21/03/2022 18:09

When my lot are out, I crumble some St Agur into a giant mushroom and grill it, maybe with a drizzle of Balsamic on top, and then I’d serve it with some tasty deli items from M&S or Waitrose like stuffed vine leaves, houmous and what sort of thing. None of my family eat blue cheese or mushrooms so that’s always my choice of dinner if I’m eating alone.

ToiletGambles · 21/03/2022 18:09

Yes, definitely a nice takeaway! Spoil yourself! If it's completely out the question then I would go to M&S and get some lovely things from their party/picnic sort of ranges. Not so much cooking but you can have all the things you like without thinking of anyone else's tastes!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 21/03/2022 18:10

My favourite is a baked camembert with crusty bread and chutney, wine, and some pate and crackers

TwigTheWonderKid · 21/03/2022 18:10

Something with loads of capers or anything else that DH doesn't like!

skippy67 · 21/03/2022 18:10

Takeaway, definitely.

ZaraSizeMedium · 21/03/2022 18:11

Crab and crayfish linguini.

Booster · 21/03/2022 18:13

macaroni cheese

LairyMcClairy · 21/03/2022 18:14

DH doesn’t like fish so I always have either salmon roasted in soy, ginger and garlic with noodles and broccoli or pan fried seabass, rice and roasted tomatoes.
I always have a twin pack of fish to make the most.

DoobryWhatsit · 21/03/2022 18:15

I wouldn't be able to justify a takeaway, but I would stretch to a tesco finest ready meal- probs macaroni cheese, or maybe fish pie. And maybe a gu pot....

Nnique · 21/03/2022 18:15

I always say the same thing on these threads!

My DH and I love food and neither of us has any strong dislikes (except we both hate tofu!) so we regularly eat all our mutual favourites.

On an evening at home by myself I would have a half crispy duck and pancakes. A bottle of wine to go with it. If it’s from a restaurant/takeaway maybe another dish or two to myself as well!

Forgot to add DH loves it too

Nnique · 21/03/2022 18:17

Oh posted too soon...

...so we do have crispy duck and pancakes together sometimes. But there’s just something about having all that duck to myself! I just love the idea of it.

Sadandfedup2 · 21/03/2022 18:20

A big juicy steak, chips, onion rings and peppercorn sauce. Doesn't take too long to prepare so you've got more of an evening. A gu pot for afters

Georgeskitchen · 21/03/2022 18:22

I would go to the chippy. Fish, chips and mushy peas and I would sit there and make an absolute pig of myself

Nnique · 21/03/2022 18:24

(If you don’t want to pay takeaway prices, you can get the duck and pancakes from the supermarket - that’s what we do)

iklboo · 21/03/2022 18:27

Not cook, but I'd get myself some lovely crusty bread, real butter, cheeses, charcuterie, pickled & posh crisps. Bottle of chilled white wine, good book, good music, cuddling the cats.

ToooOldForThis · 21/03/2022 18:28

I had a post on this a few weeks ago and got some great replies..I'm not sure how to find it for you?
In the end I got a posh fish cake, fancy pre prepared veg, some wine and it was all lovely but with zero effort!

Ratched · 21/03/2022 18:30

Fillet steak, jacket spud and a salad.
Cream and blue cheese to make the sauce.
30 minute meal, and with a posh cheesecake dessert, luscious 😁
