My dog went for

My garden strimmer today. Hes not the brightest dog in the world to attack a moving spinning blade.
Lawnmower? No that was acceptable but the strimmer was just a step too far.

Btw hes a reactive rescue and reacts to the oddest things. We are still finding these out.

The list is currently the following

Dogs
Cats
Horses/sheep/ any four legged animal
Drains
The crossing lights at the top of my road (but only those ones no others)
Hats
My dressing gown
Inflatable costumes
Jeremy Clarkson

And now the strimmer

Does anyone elses dog have weird dislikes?

My border collie only attacks brachycephalic dogs. She's just had a go at somebody's precious fur baby Frenchie resulting in a 3-page shouty hysterical email ending in 'Shame on you! Shame!' She's pretty chilled otherwise. Cost us the vets fee though - minimal damage but apparently the tiny nick in his ear might scar and spoil his looks. He was hideous, like something painted by Hieronymous Bosch.

GoLightly282 · 20/03/2022 19:39

Bideshi you seem quite flippant about that. If you know your dog attacks flat faced dogs why did she have the opportunity to do it?

bahamburger · 20/03/2022 19:49

We are convinced our 8 month old pup has OCD! If anything moves in the house she barks at it! Moved the washing basket? Barks! Mop, cushions, coats, shoes, things on benches/tables, flowers in vases anything she notices has changed positions she goes mental! She also barks at everything in the garden including the windHmm. Out and about she is an absolute joy, never barks and loves everything!

I'm curious..Jeremy Clarkson?????

Monkeytapper · 20/03/2022 20:08

@Bideshi it could possibly be because of the squashed snout they breathed heavier which may sound like their growling and also because they have no or very short tail so dogs can’t see if the are ‘happy’ as they don’t wag……other dogs can’t read them….might be a load of bollocks though

Good dog!

I think it was the first few weeks we had him home and we were playing the episodes of clarkson farm with Jeremy and his sheep. Doggo doesnt like sheep so subsequently now he associates JC with sheep. He goes into hunt mode and crouches low with his hackles up.

Minimal physical damage, but the poor dog will be traumatised. You need to put your dog on a lead or muzzle it.

Sex on the TV.
Seriously.

YellowPlant · 20/03/2022 20:19

Mine reacts to brachycephalic dogs too. I have to be constantly on the look out for them. Poor things, as if their lives weren’t hard enough struggling to breathe and then they get a load of aggro from other dogs.

Interesting reactivity... Do you have to fast forward the good bits?

My dog doesn't like

Large rocks from a distance that look like they could be a person
Cyclist when they are walking around in SPD shoes
Oh and he's a racist, he doesn't like black people (we live in a North West Wales and failed to socialise him around any ethnic minorities during the crucial socialisation window), I was mortified when he took an instant dislike to the new waitress in the most dog friendly cafe you could imagine.

Well firstly it’s a fairly light-hearted thread. The op mentioned her dog attacked other dogs. And secondly she was in her own garden, which perhaps the Frenchie owner should have taken into consideration, and, thirdly she thought he was growling at her. But the whole thing was a ridiculous farce with the Frenchie owner behaving like something out of Greek tragedy over her pathetic freaky apology for a dog.

Oh glad I’m not the only one. I wonder how common this is.
Bideshi · 20/03/2022 23:40

No she doesn’t need to be muzzled. She was in our own rolling acres. She only leaves her own territory to go out into the hills. Not an urban dog. And she interacts perfectly politely with other dogs- just doesn’t recognise brachycephalic breeds. Now lighten up.,

StormyWindow · 21/03/2022 00:03

How often is Jeremy coming round for Ddog to have developed such an aversion? Grin

sessell · 21/03/2022 00:45

@bideshi what an awful attitude. The final note on the frenchie owner's email sounds about right.

Whiskersonkittens21 · 21/03/2022 00:49

My dog hates the hoover, pigeons and his own farts. He jumps a mile when he farts.

NightshiftNancy · 21/03/2022 00:51

Range rovers. We've had him since he was eight weeks old, he's never had a bad experience with a vehicle of any description but any and all range rovers need a furious barking at apparently.

toomuchlaundry · 21/03/2022 00:52

Our dog still hates our neighbour’s cat that died 2 years ago! It used to taunt him when sitting in the front garden, so our dog barks at the cat ghost when we walk past the neighbour’s garden

He also hates Poirot and any toothpaste tv adverts Confused

Changethetoner · 21/03/2022 00:59

A loose hubcap. Attached to cars - that's fine, but if it is detached and resting at the side of the road, no - it gets barked at.

Nightdancer · 21/03/2022 01:12

Please encourage him to attack Jeremy Clarkson.

Fernsinthegarden · 21/03/2022 01:21

My childhood family dog was very worried about brachycephalic dogs but particularly boxers after one beat the shit out of him when he was young. No actual bodily harm done but it seemed enough for him to have a life long suspicion of boxers which all the socialisation in the world with nice boxers not making any impact. He never attacked one but would display very defensive behaviour in the vicinity which wasn’t helpful. My poor mum had to have eyes everywhere when out walking!

chipsandpeas · 21/03/2022 01:23

one of my dogs doesnt like the stairs, you practically have to push her to go up them usually only when we are going to bed at night (she was my mums dog and never really used stairs until she came to live with me last year)
unless i go on the treadmill, she practically runs up the stairs to get away from it
same with the hoover, shes scared of that as well luckily i have low hoovering standards
