My dog went for

My garden strimmer today. Hes not the brightest dog in the world to attack a moving spinning blade.
Lawnmower? No that was acceptable but the strimmer was just a step too far.

Btw hes a reactive rescue and reacts to the oddest things. We are still finding these out.

The list is currently the following

Dogs
Cats
Horses/sheep/ any four legged animal
Drains
The crossing lights at the top of my road (but only those ones no others)
Hats
My dressing gown
Inflatable costumes
Jeremy Clarkson

And now the strimmer

Does anyone elses dog have weird dislikes?

Many years ago we had a rescue ddog who hated motorcycle helmets(would attack friends helmet when he put it down), brooms, anybody clicking a biro pen(??) and the drums at the start of the Eastenders theme tune(would start barking like mad)

Mine don’t like brachycephalic dogs either! A puppy smaller than them was came over to them before I could get out of the way, they were like wtf is this?!

Mine are odd re hats, my older boy once had a barking fit at someone wearing a cycling helmet. Luckily the guy was sympathetic and removed his helmet and the dog realised it was just a human and relaxed. It was our firs5 experience of him worrying about headgear!

@HotnSunnyRainbowRoses

I’m just coming on to say I’m appalled at *@Bideshi* comments. Each new one seems worse than the one before.

Most people would assume that a pet dog allowed to roam freely on land where dogs are allowed that is open to the public is going to be friendly with other dogs.
I certainly would, although I don’t actually allow either of my dogs to interact with strange dogs ever (Bideshi is a fantastic shining example of one of the reasons why!) but I would definitely 100% assume the loose dog was dog sociable.

As a collie owner myself they already have a pretty shitty reputation already as pets, neurotic, high strung, dog aggressive etc.
Thanks for adding to it 👍

Your dog went so far as to actually bite and cause an injury to this ladies dog, no matter how minor it’s still an escalation on the growling it did prior to the other two dogs and it’s still an injury, that isn’t something to be proud of at all.
In fact, given that aggression pretty much always escalates and according to you the previous two times she just growled I’d be really quite worried actually.
But not you.
Cause obviously they deserve it being freakishly flat faced and all and hey, she’s only tiny! Barely the size of a Fox Hmm

I hope your business tanks.
I’d be fucking livid if I was that lady.

What a charmer you are.

Maybe you should take a look back at what you wrote... Hmm

Jeremy Clarkson... Quite understandable! Perhaps he was trained to attack him!!

No i think it was because he saw Jeremy Clarkson herding sheep and he particularly hates sheep. So i guess in his brain he hates JC now. I very much doubt they will ever come face to face to make it a issue.

Exactly. @Bideshi you should be banned from having dogs.
shrunkenhead · 23/03/2022 08:43

Why would you even have a dog that "goes for things"?! The potential for harm to either itself, a child, an adult (JC I'm not bothered about - dog can have him!) or another animal isn't good, OP. It's lambing season here and dogs will get shot.
I'd sort some serious training asap, if I was you!

@Bideshi

Just because you do not like Frenchies does not mean that it is alright for your dog to hurt one. It is not the French bulldogs fault that it exists. I'm a dog lover too and while I think that French bulldogs are an example of irresponsible breeding that's gone way too far, I still like them and don't make 'lighthearted jokes' about them being attacked. You let people and their dogs onto your property, therefore you have to be responsible for your dog, especially if you know that she goes for certain breeds. The fact that your husband thought that they were playing shows that not enough care and attention was being shown. Your attitude of "I don't care if my dog attacks french bulldogs because I hate french bulldogs" is quite frankly a disgusting attitude to take.

My border terrier is a softie, and she would be very upset if a dog attacked her. If the owner turned around and says "Oh, I don't care because your dog is a border terrier and I don't like border terriers, to the point that I do nothing to stop my dog attacking border terriers," Fuming wouldn't even begin to cover how I feel. And the fact that it is your land means nothing either. If you let people onto your land, you either take responsibility for your dog and treat people decently, or don't let them on your land at all.

He is a reactive rescue. Ive had him 6 months and i knew of his reactivity when i met him. I havent explained in my OP because i wanted to keep this light hearted and i didnt think it was pertinent but as you so nicely asked....

I do not let him get a hold of anything he goes for.. he reacts to them. Its very different.
I do not let him off lead. I do not let him attack sheep. I never will.

He is being worked on with a behaviourist but as in all things hes had 6 years of being badly trained and badly abused it is not a quick and easy process and will take years. I have spent 6 months getting him to the point i can take him for a walk.
Training doesnt take 10 minutes with a dog who has such a history of reactivity. He wears a muzzle when out and about and i walk him at a private field.

Do not assume i am a irresponsible owner. I am far from it and i am aware of who and what my dog is.

I do not let him approach children or even adults without reviewing his attitude and his tale tale signs of reactivity.

As for why i have him? Because i am a grown woman with a disposable income who can give a dog like this my love and time. I dont need to ask permission.

Ours used to hide behind the sofa whenever I was vacuuming and bark at the Thing whenever it dared to come near. I think she’d have liked to kill it but she was too much of a wimp.
She once hid behind the sofa when a dd’s friend brought his house rabbit round, too.

@alrightfella

Horses on the tv (but not ones we see in real life 🤷🏼‍♀️) Maps on the tv in travel type programmes Black labradors - no bad experiences with any just a dislike of them, and is not keen on black dogs at all really. Carrier bags

@alrightfella - I wonder if she thinks the ones on tv are actually rats not horses? About the right size (depending on the size of your tv) 🐀

CorsicaDreaming · 01/04/2022 11:12

@Bideshi - I think you have got to consider that if your dog is getting to the nipping stage, and you are running something open to the public - what happens if over Easter a small child wearing a lamb mask approaches your dog?

A collie is quite likely to think "I might round up this lamb and give it a little nip in order to get it in the right place."

If that nip leads to a loss of a small finger for a small child, imagine the trauma for that child and family.

It is highly likely that would get escalated to the police and your dog will be put down and you could well be facing at least a fine if not a prison sentence.

It really is potentially quite serious and I think you do have to be aware that your dog is giving you red flags.

Collies are brilliant for what they are bred to do - roam over massive countryside and round up sheep. Not to be let loose to round up people (or their dogs) in an area open to the (highly unpredictable and sometimes fairly stupid and unaware ) general public...

He saw my friends rabbit for the first time the other day - he wanted to play and chased it none stop round the garden, luckily the rabbit was faster! I think he thought it was a small long eared dog haha

HaHa Hmm
I bet the rabit laughed it's fucking brains out being chased non stop round the garden by your dog.
Was he running to show off his speed?
Or running for his life

If I was the owner of the rabbit your dog would not be welcome and shame on the owner for allowing this prey animal to be chased .
